Due to the Writer's Guild of America strike, Hollywood's party, the Golden Globes Awards were transformed from a boozy, fun dinner party to a press conference where presenters from entertainment programs like Extra! and E! News got to announce the winners. Yes, it was as painful as it sounded (Giuliana Rancic, it's not about you); many said they couldn't believe they were announcing the winners but said they would prefer it with the stars. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association voting pool for the Golden Globes only consists of 83 members, but every year their mainstream tastes become one of the potential early prognosticators for the Emmys and the Oscars. Over in Beverly Hills today, the stylists are putting the finishing touches on the stars' couture, that long red carpet is being laid and some assistant is double checking the seals on the envelopes. When we woke up this morning, Gothamist hoped last night's Oscars were only a dream. Because the idea that Crash won still hurts our head so much that we haven't been able to really read all the nitty-gritty (because we know our eyes will start bleeding) - we can't believe we frigging liveblogged that shondah! Forget conspiracy theories about Jack Palance being wacked out and mistakenly reading Marisa Tomei's name as Best Supporting Actress in 1992 (maybe over Judy Davis) - this will bet he conspiracy theory to talk about for ages. Or maybe everyone in Hollywood really does love Don Cheadle, even though he wasn't allowed a producer credit at the Oscars. We don't know - and just to spite you, Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, Gothamist will be attempting to only watch movies on DVD whenever possible - screw you and your horrible voting tactics. But we'll see you next year, with clenched teeth, some ibuprofen and a hotline to our shrink. more ›

If it involves movies or television, Gothamist is interested. And if it's the tiniest bit related to the Oscars, then we're all over it. Many wonder what is the use of following these critics' awards, since they are only directionally useful in wondering who will win the Oscars, an imperfect process also. Gothamist ventures to say that when things move us, we want to talk about it, think about it, tell others about it. Movies are a reflection of who we are and become calling cards of ideas and dreams to other places, whether it's to a rural farm town in Nebraska or an emerging metropolis like Shanghai. If you're a member of the Independent Feature Project, take advantage of the second Charlotte Sometimes showing this weekend at the Pioneer Theater in the East Village, as part of the screening schedule for Independent Spirit Award nominated films. Charlotte Sometimes was nominated for two - Best Supporting Actress, Jacqueline Kim, and Best feature under $500,000. The only other things I know about it are that Roger Ebert thought it was a wonderful film (he's iffy lately, but he's a great advocate of rising filmmakers), romance plays a role, and that it has an Asian cast. I feel very strongly about supporting Asian filmmakers, which probably contributed to about 60% of the reasons why I saw Maid in Manhattan and Autumn in New York in theaters. Better Luck Tomorrow, which made a splash Sundance last year for showing a seedy side of Asian-American youth, will be released this spring by MTV Films, but Charlotte Sometimes does not have distribution yet, which is why I'm glad I'm an IFP member.
