This week’s repertory options want to take New York moviegoers around the world and back again via the silver screen. But spring has finally sprung like so many daffodils in the new theatrical releases category as well, so there are lots to see all over the city this weekend.
The Cinecultist's Weekly Movie Picks: Vigilante Edition
Weekend Movies: Even in January, There's Plenty to See Here
Ah January. That lovely first month of the year which big Hollywood uses as its annual dumping ground. The Awards eligibility period is over, and now is the time to catch-up on all those films being talked about that came out at the same time over the past few weeks. Still, New Yorkers are lucky as we retain many filmgoing options. Sure you can check-out the latest video game adaptation from hackmeister Uwe Boll, but if you heard about last year's which we're sure somebody will find funny.
Loving So Much
The best part of a panel about "LOVE" sponsored by The Week magazine was when Harold Evans asked Bernardo Bertolucci, via a patchy connection from Rome, about love. Bertolucci said, "What love? Like I have passion for cinema!" and then he went into a story about how he loved Jean-Luc Godard and his work so much that the first time he met JLG, Bertolucci threw up on him - "That was the manifestation of my love for him." Cinephilia and gastrointestinal distress - that's Gothamist in a nutshell!
What John Malkovich Really Wants
- John Malkovich on who he'd like to wear pieces from his new clothing line, in an interview with Lynn Hirschberg for the New York Times Magazine. Javier Bardem, Caetano Veloso, Johnny Depp and Bernardo Bertolucci have opted to wear Malkovich's clothing line, Mrs. Mudd. Gothamist giggles when we think about Malkovish referring to Dr. Dre as "the doctor."
