The holiday windows are back, and we dropped by last week to see what department store has the best display this year. With Barneys going Gaga for the holiday season, and Bergdorf Goodman getting wild with a “Carnival of the Animals” theme—those two were tops in our book. Meanwhile, over at Bloomingdale's, a penguin in shades was the high point—try harder next year, Bloomie's. more ›

Earlier this week, Birdie, a dog in Brooklyn, told us all about dog fashions, predicting that "leashes are going to get more constricting and hateful" this season. Well, last night our photographer Katie Sokoler dropped by the very crowded Dog Fashion Show at Bergdorf Goodman to check out the latest in canine wear. There were no constricting or hateful leashes, but it's important to keep in mind that these dogs are shopping off the rack (disgusting). Surely the next Paris Fashion Week will feature some more fashion forward stuff, but in the meantime, click through for a look at what some of New York City's pups are (forced to be) wearing. more ›

A Brooklyn Dog Preps Us For Tomorrow Night's Canine Fashion Show

A Brooklyn Dog Preps Us For Tomorrow Night's Canine Fashion Show

Humans and cats have long ruled the runway, but over the past few years canines have also made the catwalk their own, as unnatural as that may be. Tomorrow night the trend continues as Bergdorf Goodman hosts its annual dog fashion show, and while we're ardent followers of the canine fashion scene—this is actually the second dog fashion show we'll be attending this year—we're no experts. So with that in mind, we reached out to Birdie, a dog in Brooklyn, for some insight. more ›

The Holiday Windows Are Here

The department stores recently unveiled their holiday windows, and our photographer Katie Sokoler dropped by the big ones, including the Saks unveiling (which was a whole big production that Patti LaBelle performed at—video below); click through to check them all out. A few notes on the displays: Bloomingdale's also had a performance to celebrate theirs, but they put John Legend in the window—so perhaps trapping celebrity performers in confined glass areas is the future look of Christmas. But it looks like despite that forward-thinking design tactic, Barneys outdid everyone once again. This year they created visually stunning, dark world with inspiration courtesy of the foodie culture. For more, check out WNYC's analysis of the windows, here. more ›

Water Main Break On West 57th Creates "Midtown River"

Water Main Break On West 57th Creates "Midtown River"

Yesterday afternoon, a water main break on West 57th caused flooding in buildings between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue. According to MyFoxNY, the break was around 9 West 57th Street (the Solow Building with the big red "9" outside it): "The muddy, fast flowing water has crowds of tourists snapping photos and shoppers trying to hop the fast-moving stream." more ›

Bergdorf Goodman: Bedbug Detecting Dog Just A Precaution

Bergdorf Goodman: Bedbug Detecting Dog Just A Precaution

Bedbugs have infested some major name-brand stores in NYC this summer, including Hollister, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Victoria's Secret. Then they went after the bookworms at the NYPL! And now Bergdorf Goodman on Fifth Avenue has a bedbug-sniffing beagle roaming the aisles. This should make for a cute Metropolitan Diary entry about a pearl-clutching "woman of a certain age" discovering bedbugs' preference for blue blood, but the luxury department store insists there is nothing to see here, folks. This is just a preemptive strike! No bed bugs here. Please continue shopping. more ›

Video: NYC Stores Caught Mislabeling Fur

Video: NYC Stores Caught Mislabeling Fur

Fashion Week is in full effect and The Humane Society of the United States is watching out for our furry friends, as usual. This morning the organization led a press conference with NY State Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal following an investigation that uncovered some big NYC retailers selling unlabeled fur-trimmed garments in violation of state law (which requires that all apparel with real or fake fur be labeled as such, giving shoppers access to product information). All the big names were on their list, including Bloomingdale’s, Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue. Footage of the investigation shows what may happen to confused customers: more ›

Bergdorf Goodman's Creepy Holiday Windows

As far as holiday window displays have gone this year, Bergdorf Goodman may take the Christmas cake for their design. Sure, it'll frighten children, and possibly even adults, but the holidays can be a scary time. Bergdorf's is just keepin' it real, kids. Wally G explains that the display is titled Calendar Girls; as for the aesthetic "David Hoey and his window design team drew inspiration for the theme from the dioramas at the American Museum of Natural History. The 58th Street windows, as well as those of the men's department across the street, featured fanciful anthropomorphistic depictions of leisure-time activities." more ›
