Tanning Beds Are Killing You

With sand being a danger to beachgoers this summer, many might be seeking their sun-kissed glow from one of the many tanning beds around the city. But wait, those aren't safe either! 1010WINS warns they are now in the top cancer risk category, "deeming them as deadly as arsenic and mustard gas" and pointing towards a new study that says "the risk of skin cancer jumps by 75 percent when people start using tanning beds before age 30." What's most surprising is that we are hearing this in 2009. Anyway, since experts have now found that all types of ultraviolet radiation are carcinogenic (previously, only one type was thought to be lethal), what will it mean for tanning salons? The new classification places them alongside tobacco, the hepatitis B virus, chimney sweeping, and other things that can definitely cause cancer. Find out what else will likely kill you, tonight at 11.

Gillibrand's Rifles Are No Longer Under Her Bed

After Senator Kirsten Gillibrand told Newsday that she and her husband keep two rifles under their bed in their upstate home, the newly appointed Senator has decided to move the rifles. Her spokesman Matt Canter told Newsday, "Given that the location of the guns has been disclosed, they have been moved for security reasons."

Worst boyfriend of the week: A Queens man was arrested after shooting his girlfriend, who had been sleeping in bed in their Queens apartment. Police suspect Larry Smith had been cleaning his (illegal) gun when it went off and shot Felicia Crawford in the chest. A police source tells the Post that Smith had the firearm in bed because "He heard a noise and he got up to get his gun." Crawford is in stable condition at Mary Immaculate Hospital. A neighbor says Smith "feels very bad about what happened."

Just in time for Sex and the City's big screen release: BED is back. The club was one of the many featured in the HBO series, and is housed, of course, in the Meatpacking District. Last year when a man died there, it was put under a dark spotlight and ended up shutting its doors.

The Gray Lady slums it out to far East Williamsburg to report on the hipster bohemian squalor of the sprawling McKibbin Street “dorms;” two hulking buildings converted from garment factories to lofts in the late nineties by a trio of savvy Stuyvesant alums. It’s since become a filthy, bed-bug ravaged rite of passage for the young DIY arts set, who pile on top of each other in warren-like lofts more crowded than one of Dan Deacon’s dance-a-thons.
