We understand that in New York City, good real estate is stretched to within an inch of its life. Studios are turned into two-bedrooms with the cunning use of walls, people will live in windowless bedrooms if it means they can be in the East Village. Hell, someone might even pay to live on a rooftop if they get to brag about having a balcony. This is what we're guessing is going on at the back of 14 Bayard Street.
Construction Fail: Balcony At 14 Bayard Street
Shocking Theft
The criminals hold the tasers now! Watch out would-be targets, if last year the machete was the weapon of choice, one mugger in Brooklyn may be unintentionally spearheading a taser trend. The Brooklyn Paper notes that on October 2nd "a stun-gun-toting purse snatcher shocked a victim on Bayard Street [at Graham Avenue] before running off. The woman was walking home from a bar at around 3 a.m." The robber ran off with her purse, cash and cell phone after she collapsed to the ground. Serious buzz kill.
Caught on Tape: More Rats!
Vynl, 507 Columbus AvenueOn three separate nights cameras caught the critters feasting "on scraps that were left on the dirty kitchen floor and climbing over crates of glassware" at Da Silvano's (pictured top left). The owner there said the problem was caused by nearby construction and recent renovations and claimed he will be throwing out everything edible in the restaurant and starting fresh. Ah, not even the celeb hot spots can escape the wrath of roaches and rodents.
A Mouthwatering Taste of Chinatown Preview
Tomorrow is the annual Taste of Chinatown where over 50 restaurants offer a variety of their dishes for $1 or $2 bites. And for $1 or $2, you do get a lot. In fact, we tried a few of the dishes offered tomorrow, and we got very full after four "tastes," so save your appetite for tomorrow. And the event is between 1PM and 6PM, rain or shine - and there are tents so if rain comes, you'll be covered.
Dim Sum Danger
The New York Times reports that The Hong Kong government recently issued a report that eating certain kinds of dim sum, particularly those fried or cooked with copious amounts of fat and oil, should be avoided for health reasons. While this may seem like somewhat of a no-brainer, many are ignoring the warnings and eating the same dim sum they've been eating for years, arteries be damned.
