After an off-duty detective shot two men at a Baxter St. residential address--killing one of them--cops are looking for the ex-boyfriend of the building's receptionist. Detective Martin Carrano fired ten shots Wednesday evening after he had been slashed in the back of his head and in defense of 26-year-old Artemda Gjeli, who worked as a receptionist at the building.

An off-duty police killed one of two men who attacked the desk clerk of a luxury building in Chinatown late last night. Detective Martin Carrano, 36, was also stabbed in the neck and back; his injuries, as were the desk clerk's, were non-life-threatening

While Chinatown's annual Chinese New Year Parade won't be until next weekend, there are still plenty of activities to celebrate the year 4705. If you're heading to Chinatown tomorrow (New Year's Day), be sure to head over to Chatham Square (the intersection of Bowery, Mott and East Broadway) for the New Year’s Day Firecracker Ceremony & Cultural Festival. For the first time since the city banned fireworks (and firecrackers), there will be firecrackers in Chinatown. A "controlled" display of 300,000 firecrackers will go off in Chatham Square between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. We can honestly say that you haven't experienced a Chinese New Year until your ears ring from firecrackers. Sunday's events don't stop with the firecrackers either. There will also be fireworks in Chinatown's Columbus Park (Mulberry and Baxter Street)at 7 p.m. The fireworks display will reportedly reach 10 stories high.

- Restaurant Girl visits relative newcomer Rewind, an "Asian-influenced Italian" spot on the Lower East Side and isn't wowed by the "sensory overload of flavors, seasonings and ingredients," giving it a 3 out of 10. Ouch.

Gothamist was excited to see this sign pasted in a window on 23rd between 6th and 7th Avenues the other morning. The Chinatown location of Pongsri touts itself as the oldest family-run and operated Thai restaurant in New York City, and there are two additional locations -- one in Gramercy and one in the theatre district. We definitely welcome this addition to our neighborhood, as we are in dire need of some decent Thai food within delivery range of the office. And we particularly like the chili pepper dotting the "i" -- a very nice (and spicy) touch, just the way we like our Thai food.
