Week in Rock: Dark was the...Edition

This past Sunday night some of the city's most talented, young and old, stood under the roof of Radio City Music Hall for the Dark Was the Night show. The evening was in celebration of the recent release of the same name, put together by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of the National for the Red Hot organization. The night started off with a bang as the Dirty Projectors performed their epic song "Useful Chamber" off their upcoming Bitte Orca release (which will undoubtedly make it to everyone's "Best of" lists year/decade/century/in perpetuity). The night continued with multiple appearances by David Byrne, and sets by the National, Bon Iver, Feist and former-Rikers Island corrections officer turned soul singer Sharon Jones. HEADS UP: Last year we had Daniel Kitson join our Laughable Hype comedy show, and we've been eagerly awaiting his return to the states since then. Good news...he's back! We strongly urge you to buy tickets right now so you can catch the special performance on Monday at Mo Pitkins. These will go fast Sold out! But this just in...Kitson will also be performing at Union Hall this Sunday at 9pm (first come first served).

MOVIES: It's a perfect night to head to the movies. Get a double-feature in at the MoMA with Fabricating Tom Zé followed by David Cronenberg's Crash. Let's focus on the former film. Tom Zé (pictured) is a Brazilian songwriter and composer and this documentary (filmed during a 2005 European tour) charts his "personal universe". Zé is an "uncompromising and inspired artist...seen by many (including David Byrne and Arto Lindsay) as revitalizing the ever-evolving Tropicalia movement. Zé, who narrates his own story, is a very special musical phenomenon in a genre mostly associated with Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil—both of whom warmly assess the musical genius of their friend."
