A woman employed by the Macmillan publishing house was strolling along Fifth Avenue with her co-worker Monday afternoon when a ring slipped off her finger and tumbled down into the impenetrable darkness beneath a sidewalk grate. And there it would have stayed for millennia, passing out of history and into legend, had it not been for two brave Con Ed workers sent on a quest into the bowels of the Flatiron District to bring it back.

UES Firefighters Find Their Kitty, Carlo
Yesterday we were sent this photo of a flyer displaying a lost kitten named Carlo, a 5-month-old tabby that the firefighters on East 85th Street had taken in. It's believed the kitten ran off when the firefighters got an emergency call on Saturday night, after which time they put up flyers around the neighborhood (with the assistance of Anjellicle Cats) asking for their new feline friend to be returned. And their plan worked: Carlo is back in the firehouse!
FDNY Saves Cute Area Cat From An Evil Barb Wire Fence!
Nothing beats a Bart's People story, right? On October 28th, New York's Bravest saved this adorable cat from an evil barb wire fence in Queens. The FDNY's Frank Dwyer tells us that Friday at 3 p.m., the FDNY members from Ladder 138 in Queens were notified of the stuck animal, who was on top of the fence at National Street and 43rd Avenue. Dwyer says, "Firefighters used the tower ladder bucket to reach the cat, and removed the cat from the wires in a few minutes."
Mosquitoes Are Ruining Rockaway!
First came the media, and now the mosquitos! Rockaway is making headlines again as a flock of the winged vampires has descended upon the once peaceful beachside neighborhood. According to the Daily News, "just a few short miles from the beaches, playgrounds sit empty and patio furniture is off-limits as summer has been hijacked by swarms of mosquitoes." Adorable Kitten Rescued from Wall of Joe Lentol's Office
While Assemblyman Joe Lentol was listening to new Governor Andrew Cuomo’s State of the State address in Albany, back in Williamsburg his staff was hearing a less purr-fect speech. Around lunch time, communications director Amy Cleary noticed a cat crying desperately from somewhere in the back of Lentol's district office. Fortunately, Cleary and Lentol's executive assistant JoAnn McErlean spotted four fireman on their lunchbreak buying sandwiches at a deli across the street. Hearing about the cat in distress, New York's Bravest left their sandwiches in the fire truck and sprung into action.
Fort Greene Drama: Cat In A Tree!
The Daily News has a crazy detailed video documenting every event unfolding around a cat that was stuck in a tree in Fort Greene earlier this week. It's very Bart's People! Basically, "area woman" is slowly being driven mad by "area stray cat" that is stuck in a very tall tree located next to her apartment. One "area man" is all, "Cat in a tree—it's so cliché."
