If you've never played petanque, head on down to Smith Street for North America's largest petanque tournament -- the two block stretch betweeen Bergen and Pacific will be shut down and covered with sand just for the occasion. Only a decade ago, mostly it was just people up to no good who could be found outside on Smith Street after a certain hour. It was the edge of a particularly rough Brooklyn neighborhood known as Gowanus that real estate developers pretend no longer exists. People who visited Smith Street late at night in those days were not in search of the gourmet.
We've been following the career of Ellis G for about a year-- ever since he started chalking his shadow-art around Smith Street in Brooklyn. He's already gotten a fair amount of press for the shadow-outlines-- and he deserves it, because the pieces are unique and fun. Today the Times weighs with a nice bio piece:
It's true. A new French bistro is opening in Brooklyn - Jolie Restaurant. The gall (or Gaul, as it were)! Opening up in Cobble Hill/Boerum Hill, where standbys like Bar Tabac, Quercy, Banania and Patois have already cornered the Gallic gourmand market.
Montague Street, the main shopping and dining drag in Brooklyn Heights has long been known as a drag when it comes to its restaurant scene.
