Seven-Year-Old Dies Suddenly in School Bathroom

Second grader Justin Leith was found by a student in a restroom at PS 205 in the Bronx just minutes after he was excused from class complaining of a stomach ache. A second grader from a different class found Leith unresponsive on the floor of the bathroom and told his teacher, who alerted emergency services. The seven-year-old could not be revived, however, and was declared dead at St. Barnabas Hospital. There didn't appear to be any signs of trauma to the boy. more ›

Cop Recovering From Subway Shoot-Out Doing "OK"

Marchiondo was shot three times (in the hip, ankle and foot), and her husband said, "I'm just happy she's OK...She was almost ready to retire." more ›

Young Bystander Shot During Fight Over Cell Phone

Early yesterday morning, 12-year-old honors student Kirsys Rodriguez was shot in the lower back when a fight broke out in the Fordham section of the Bronx. The Daily News reports "rival gangs of Dominicans and African-Americans started arguing" during a party, and the fight spilled out to the street. At least 20 men were "facing off over accusations someone had stolen the $200 cell phone." more ›

Brooklyn Boxer Killed While Trying to Break Up Bar Fight

Twenty-eight year old Kemal Kolenovic was killed yesterday morning when an angry man drove into him outside a Bronx bar. Kolenovic had tried to calm down a fight between patrons at the Moonlight Restaurant and Bar. The NY Times says the fight was "apparently brought on by arguments over which Albanian clan was superior." When the argument moved to the outside, one of the men fighting got into his SUV, "made a U-turn in his SUV and jumped the curb outside" and hit Kolenovic, whose back was to the car, according to the Post. Kolenovic later died at St. Barnabas Hospital with massive head injuries. He was not the intended target, but the driver fled and the police are still looking for him. more ›

Hit-and-Run Caused by Access-A-Ride Driver

Yesterday, police were looking for the driver of a white van that hit a 71 year old pedestrian at Boston Road and Tremont Avenue in the Bronx. And now it turns out the white van was one from Access-A-Ride, the MTA-administered service (private companies are contracted to operate vans) that shuttles people with disabilities who are unable to use the subway or buses. more ›

Man Arrested for Killing 3 Month Old Daughter

Lawrence Johnson of the Bronx was arrested on Saturday night for repeatedly punching his 3 month old baby daughter. The baby was unconscious when 911 got to the apartment and was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital (pictured). According to the police, Johnson and his wife Lisandra Garcia had been fighting; the NY Sun reports that Johnson was "'mad' and 'frustrated'" at Garcia and he punched 11 pound Jayla while she was sleeping. He allegedly went to sleep after punching her, though he later claimed to have given her CPR. more ›

Man Kills Ex, Her Son and Substitute Super

A Bronx mother and son and a man filling in for the superintendent were bludgeoned to death by the woman's ex-boyfriend. Fifty six year old Gloria Valdez and her 36 year old son Carl were found in their basement apartment at 1029 Hall Place, with Polonia Peralta, who was subbing for the super while he was on vacation, in the hall. Police believe 38 year old Rafin Vellon attacked Valdez first, then her mentally handicapped son. Then Peralta may have interrupted the attack when Vellon beat him as well. Peralta died at St. Barnabas Hospital. A barbell and pipe were found at the scene. more ›

As Heat Breaks, Gotham Mourns Those It Took

With the recent heat wave broken the city has now begun the unenviable task of counting bodies. And the news isn't so swell: As many as 13 New Yorkers may have had their lives cut short by the recent oppressive heat, though as of this morning the City was keeping the count at 10. Six of the dead lived in Brooklyn and the other four lived in Manhattan. The victims ranged in age from 42 to 86, and their deaths are mostly being blamed on tightly sealed apartments with poor ventilation and/or no AC. Such conditions can easily lead to advanced heat stroke, or hyperthermia. Further out on Long Island at least two other people were felled by the high temperatures. more ›

Young Mother Dies After Falling From Roof

Tragedy struck a young mother Friday night as she was drinking with her boyfriend on another friends roof. Monica Perez, a 25-year-old mother of one and the estranged wife of a NYPD officer, fell seven stories around 3:30 A.M.. Her boyfriend immediately called 911 and she was rushed to nearby St. Barnabas Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 4:56 A.M.

Missing Bronx Child Found

Little Brandon Aponte, who was kidnapped from a Walton Avenue tattoo shop where his father works on Saturday, was found this morning, along with Tatiana Morales who kidnapped him. They were spotted around 2AM in East Flatbush by police, and the 13 year old Morales was taken into police custody for questioning. The story was very weird. Yesterday, it was reported that Morales was a tattoo shop regular, possibly stripper from Detroit named "Essence," had taken the 3 year old, but then it turned out she was a 13 year old girl named Tatiana Morales "who could appear twice her age by dressing up." Aponte's uncle Zeus told reporters that Morales was fixated on the boy, telling him that she was his mommy. Police had taken Brandon's father Luis Aponte into custody for questioning about the boy's disappearance, since he waited 3 hours before contacting police. Aponte was supposed to take a polygraph test, and relatives claim there was no relationship between the 28 year old father and 13 year old Morales. Zeus Aponte is offering a $10,000 reward for Brandon's return. more ›
