Our heart melted when we read how this adorable kitten made its way to the Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition:

BARC Shelter's kennel manager, Jose, made an unusual rescue last Saturday afternoon. A man named Richard thinks he has a kitten under the hood of his Chevy Tahoe. He's driving and has his dog Duff in the car with him. Duff doesn't like other dogs and really doesn't like cats. Richard decides to drive to the shelter. No, not the safest solution, but the kitten we call Chevette is safe and sound if a little greasy. She also needs a home and prefers public transportation, in a cat carrier please!
Chevette is available for adoption. We think her favorite movie will end up being either Grease (duh) or My Neighbor Totoro (catbus).

EVENT: Together, the New York Book Club and the Gotham Center present "Resistance: A Radical History of the Lower East Side," with Michael Rosen, Al Orensanz, Jay Blotcher, and moderator Clayton Patterson. They'll tell you all about how the LES "experienced massive changes during the 1980s and 90s," including stories from the activists, writers, artists, and residents who lived it. More info here.

This made us totally sad: Shelters are getting ready for many pets to be dumped in the next few months. Many people receive pets as holiday gifts, but aren't able to deal with them. Animal Care & Control says that while some people complain that dogs are unruly, they don't admit they didn't take the time to train the dogs in the first place. Here are tips from the ASPCA on how to deal with your new pets:

A while back, we noted how many of the NY Times "Hunt" columns by Joyce Cohen happened to feature real estate hunts by cat owners. And one of the stories we loved was the one about a Brooklynite who needed a subletter to not only take care of her apartment, but her cat Boris as well. Cohen, who blogs at Hunt Grunt, let us know that two years after the column appeared, Boris may have developed a bit of a star-complex - though owner Nicole might have indulged that by creating some short films about him. And if you're interesting in a homemade cat toy that Cohen made, she is offering it to the person who writes the best poem - more details here.

Aw, the Daily News has a feature on - and photograph of - a tabby cat who survived last month's Greenpoint warehouse fire. Smokey, a male cat who suffered "burns and lost the tips of his ears and whiskers," is currently at BARC Shelter in Williamsburg. He was found by a volunteer in her Noble Street backyard in mid-May, and BARC's vet Dr. Elaine Felton says, "He looked worse than he really was. He looked terrible." Smokey looks so sweet - we hope he finds a loving owner to take him home. More: You can see how far Smokey has progressed, as BARC's blog had photos of the kitty on May 22 and May 25 (warning - it's heartbreaking because he looks bad, but it's great to see him looking good now).

We were walking over to the anti-war march yesterday when we noticed a commotion in Washington Square Park. It turned out that there was some kind of small dog festival going on-- complete with costumes and music. The atmosphere was literally rife with daschunds and weinerdoodles and schnauzers and other miniature pups. If you missed out on the fun, the NYC Dachshund and Small Dogs meetups are next Sunday.
