Apocalypse Now: 2012 Arrives Early In Times Square

[UPDATE BELOW] A reader sent in these photos of the New Year's ball in Times Square, showing that the numbers have already switched to 2012. We've contacted the Times Square Alliance to find out why they want to hang such an apocalyptic sign over our heads for a year, and will update when we hear back. more ›

New Year, New New Year's Eve Ball

New Year, New New Year's Eve Ball

While we didn't spot this year's numerals hitching a ride to Times Square on a pedicab, or via the 6 train, there will be a 2011 this New Year's Eve. And it will be accompanied by the famous ball (no, not the Snooki ball). This year's ball will be lit by 32,256 Philips LEDs, each using just 22 watts of power, and will be able to create 16 million color effects, all using just the energy of two household stoves! The ball is 12 feet in diameter and weighs 11,875 pounds, and it's adorned with 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles—a new pattern created by some of them will read: "Let There Be Love." Her castmates will also be on hand, leading the crowd in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for group fist-pumping. Can everyone just let out a collective SIGH at midnight this year? Let's cleanse the palate and go back to simpler times: more ›

             + 1 more

Last night the rich, famous, recession-proof and beautiful came together under the roof of the Met for the annual Costume Institute Ball, in celebration of the museum's new exhibit called Model as Muse. While last year the theme was superhero, this year's was supermodel, and Style has a thorough rundown of the glamorous night (that the NY Post thought was more Zoolander-inspired). The evening wasn't without some drama, of course, the NY Times reports that designer Azzedine Alaïa wasn't included in the exhibit, so some of his muses, like Naomi Campbell, refused to attend. There were still plenty of best and worst dressed to gawk at, however. more ›

Yankee Ball is Going, Going, Gone (to the Wrong Person?)

Cops Arrest Yankee Stadium Vultures After Last Game

Cops Arrest Yankee Stadium Vultures After Last Game

At least 18 baseball fans were arrested after the last game at the old Yankee Stadium Sunday night, as attendees ran amok trying to grab whatever souvenirs they could get their hands on. We're talking precious mementos such as cup-holders ripped off of seats, which can now be yours on eBay! According to the Post, one fan sneaked onto the field after the game and blended in with the groundskeepers, almost managing to steal third base, some priceless grass and sacred dirt. more ›
