Easy, sugar fiends - the new Magnolia Bakery outpost on the Upper West Side (Columbus at 69th Street) isn't quite opening at 11AM as Eater reported yesterday. We walked by around 9:30AM and the sign said that they anticipated a noon opening. Magnolia had always been a popular West Village stop for more super-sugary and homey desserts when a seemingly sudden cupcake craze hit the city. Next thing we knew, there were analyses of......

Rainbow cookies are quite possibly our favorite cookies. Ever. Whenever someone brings a cookie assortment from an Italian bakery we always eat all the rainbow cookies first and usually discard the rest. The best rainbow cookies money can buy are available at Isaac's Bake Shop, 1419 Avenue J in Brooklyn, NY, right across the street from Di Fara's pizza, and just a few blocks away from where we grew up. (We still think it's......

Eater confirmed that cupcake confectioner heavyweight Magnolia Bakery is opening its first branch location on Columbus Avenue and West 69th Street. Magnolia owner Steve Abrams, an Upper West Sider, told Eater, "My friends who know I own Magnolia keep asking when I'm going to open them a bakery up here. So I think it's time." Well, it's probably time and having the right retail space. The store will occupy the corner that Japanese restaurant Lenge......

Tate's Bake Shop Cookbook: The Best Recipes from Southampton's Favorite Bakery for Home-Style Cookies, Cakes, Pies, Muffins, and Breads by Kathleen King (St. Martin's Press, 2005) As the heat wave has continued on with but a brief respite, Gothamist has maintained its no-cooking policy for the most part. But there is one exception: baking. Cookies and cakes can't be made without an oven, unfortunately, so this past weekend we cranked up the A/C to make......

When it comes to sweets, candy gets no respect. In New York, grown-ups can--without embarrassment--satisfy their collective sweet tooth with high-end chocolates, beautiful wedding cakes (and trendy cupcakes), gourmet doughnuts, and Viennese pastries. But for those of us who still get cravings for good old-fashioned candy, is there a place for us in NYC? Gothamist had been wondering this for awhile. And when an old college friend came to visit last week to see The......

Just what the city has been waiting for: A fight between a cupcake shop and an ice cream shop! Crumbs Bake Shop and Crema Lita taking it to the cupcakes. Crumbs used to supply cupcakes to Crema Lita, the ice cream chain which had to change its "low-fat" claims when it was found their ice cream was fatty, but then Crema Lita CEO Jeffrey Britz decided to use cupcakes from his own bakery, the SoHo......

The Buttercup Bake Shop Cookbook: More Than 80 Recipes for Irresistible, Old-Fashioned Treats, by Jennifer Appel (Simon & Schuster, 2001) Gothamist's addiction to cupcakes has been well documented. At the risk of turning Gothamist into a cupcakes blog, along the lines of Slice, here's another entry devoted to Gothamist's favorite food. We were thrilled to pick up The Buttercup Bake Shop Cookbook for half price at the Strand, since we always visit Buttercup to pick......

In an attempt to share the wealth of New York's cupcake scene, Gothamist FedExed a dozen cupcakes to The Kristen Buckley Show in L.A. (8 with vanilla cake, 3 with chocolate cake, 1 red velvet). After telling them about our project, the people at Buttercup Bake Shop were very helpful in trying to buffer the cupcakes from the sides with extra wax paper. We then wrapped the box in some bubble wrap and slid......
