We have a friend who was a New Kids on the Block fan a long time ago. In middle school. So long ago! At this point it's like that time never really existed for this friend. Anyway, this friend has much better taste in music now, but still, is wondering if it would kill these guys to play a show in New York City during their collaborative tour with The Backstreet Boys? We remember Z100 fondly. It was our morning listen for much of elementary school, and for better or worse, has stuck to the same broadcasting formula for all this time. The annual Jingle Ball is a fun tradition, if for nothing else, as a convenient year end recap of all the biggest pop hits of the year we might have missed. Getting all these names together for one night only is no easy feat. They had your Fall Out Boys and Backstreet Boys, Alisha Keys and Avril Levine, Timbaland's bizarre soft-rock crossover protégées and many more. They all got a slot to perform their one hit wonders to the obsessed, shrieking masses. The biggest story coming out of the concert may have been the state of Ashley Tisdale's schnoz, but the music itself was a perfect storm of mainstream glitz that just seems fitting for this crazy season. A glimpse into the musical tastes of some bloggers can be seen at Professor Barnhardt's Journal, where Bob Sassone asked a few for their ultimate mix of 20 songs from the past 25 years, including me. Bob told us to "list your favorites, not some list of 'best' or 'popular' or 'influential,' or whatever VH-1 was doing with that thing." Lots of bloggers seem to be They Might Be Giants fans. Even so, fellow contributor, 601am's Aaron, says his list "runs towards the embarassing," but as we at Gothamist know, everything can be embarassing - friends, family, hairstyles, behavior - so we take embarassing to be pretty status quo. Also, creating a mix, though it's permanent, is just a glimpse into one moment of your life (the science of a mix can be more elegantly explained in High Fidelity), and I expect my own list would be different tomorrow. more ›
