Smoking LIRR Riders Arrested After Spitting On, Punching Conductor

The things smokers will do for a puff after a night on the town! Early Sunday morning MTA police arrested two LIRR passengers after one was allegedly smoking on the train and the other punched a conductor who tried to make the smoking stop. Thinking you can still smoke on LIRR platforms, we can get—the ban on that is only months old—but who really expects to light up on an actual train anymore? more ›

Video: Giant Fireball On NJ Turnpike After Gas Tanker Explodes

A gasoline tanker truck carrying 8,500 gallons of fuel crashed into a minivan and burst into flames last night just after 9 p.m. on the New Jersey Turnpike in Carlstadt. NBC New York reports that the accident occurred near exit 18W in the northbound E-ZPass lane of the Turnpike, and that the tanker caught fire soon after the crash. The ensuing fireball could be seen for miles in the November darkness, but should not be interpreted as some sort of apocalyptic symbolic of America's self-destructive addiction to fossil fuels. Body Found In LI Matches Maine Prostitute

Police have confirmed the identity of one of the four bodies found on a Long Island beach last December as being 22-year-old Megan Waterman of Maine. Waterman disappeared in Suffolk County last June after coming to Long Island to meet a john she met on Craigslist. The identities of the other three bodies has yet to be determined, but medical evidence has helped police rule out Shannon Gilbert, a Jersey City prostitute who many initially speculated was one of the four. No cause of death has been released yet. more ›

Don't Worry About The Bodies!

Don't Worry About The Bodies!

You know those bodies that police and federal agents are investigating out in Long Island? Don't worry about them! Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer wants everyone to feel okay, okay? "I don't want anyone to think we have a 'Jack the Ripper' running around Suffolk County with blood dripping from a knife," he said at a news conference Thursday. "This is an anomaly. Don't worry about this." Then he explained that they currently have no suspects—including the john of one of the missing prostitutes who was questioned again last night. more ›

LI Cops Search For More Bodies, Another Killer Weighs In

With all four of the bodies found on the same quarter-mile stretch off the Ocean Parkway identified as women—if not actually identified—Suffolk County police now seem to be ramping up their hunt for a serial killer. Yesterday they stormed the house of Joseph Brewer, one of the last people to see 24-year-old Jersey City prostitute Shannon Gilbert back on May 1 (though, note that preliminarily none of the bodies appear to be her). Police eventually ended up taking Brewer's SUV and securing his home. Today they started another search to make sure they didn't miss any bodies nearby (closing off part of Ocean Parkway in the process). more ›

LI Beach Body Count Stays at Four, The FBI Rolls In

The case of the possible LI serial killer continues to develop. After the remains of four bodies were found this weekend on a quarter-mile stretch of brush off the shoulder of Ocean Parkway near Babylon, the police undertook a massive search for more yesterday. No other remains were found, but the proximity of the first four, all of which were female, has the police seeing a connection—and calling in the FBI. Meanwhile, the papers are already calling this another Craigslist killer. more ›

Four Bodies Found On LI Beach, Raising Serial Killer Worries

Since this past weekend, Suffolk County Police have found the decomposing remains of four people along the beach in Babylon. Police Commissioner Richard Dormer was asked if a serial killer could have dumped the bodies and he said, "We're looking at that - that we could have a serial killer... I don't think it's a coincidence that four bodies ended up in this area." more ›

Free Beach WiFi Here, In Time To Ruin Workaholic Vacations

Officials in Babylon have announced that the town will become the first on the Atlantic seaboard to offer free WiFi at beaches, parks and pools. The Suffolk County town will be opening four separate internet cafes at its various beaches over the next few weeks, the first one debuting this weekend at Overlook Beach. The cafes will also offer three free laptops as loaners and the signal will be strong enough to reach nearby boaters. Babylon Supervisor Steve Bellone told the Post, "For the first time you'll be able to surf the Internet. It is very cool. We're very excited. You can take it down to the water, you can go into the water, if you want to." Less cool news recently came out of nearby Robert Moses State Park, where the only signal beach goers were getting was from Park officials telling them to head elsewhere since large portions of the shore had to be closed off due to erosion. more ›

Older Gals With Means Try to Get Into Young Dudes' Jeans

Jeremy Abelson, founder of the luxury lifestyle newsletter Pocket Change, struck a publicity goldmine last February when his company sponsored a speed dating event that matched affluent men of any age with attractive young women of any I.Q. Called “Natural Selection Speed Date: Rich Guys & Hot Girls,” the event drew hate mail from women objecting to the crass, misogynistic nature of this “exercise in eugenics.” more ›
