MSG Hosted First Auto Show Today... in 1900

Ah, the auto show. An American institution. Did you know the first modern automotive show was held on this day in 1900, at Madison Square Garden? (Not the asbestos one, the second one.) Do you think they had car show models back then? more ›

Bloomberg Calls Midtown Violence "Wilding"

Bloomberg Calls Midtown Violence "Wilding"

The multiple brawls, shootings and more that spread in Midtown on Easter night into Monday morning were dubbed "wilding" by Mayor Bloomberg, "The mayhem in Midtown appears to be a bunch of gang members wilding. There’s a bunch of people that think it’s cute to go out and to run around and to cause chaos, and we loaded the area up with police, but they can’t be everywhere." Know what else some of these people may think is cute? To give the bird to a Daily News photographer after being arrested! more ›

High-Tech Cab Additions Approved

High-Tech Cab Additions Approved

Come October, your experience in the backseat of a taxi could be a little more high-tech. The Taxi & Limousine Commission unanimously approved touch-screen "passenger information monitors" for all 13,000 yellow cabs on the streets. In addition to showing information, entertainment, and advertising, these monitors will show a map of the taxi's current location using GPS. The new systems would also accept credit card payments. Some cab drivers expressed their opposition to the systems, citing the large costs and privacy issues of the GPS systems. The systems (medalion owners have 4 to choose from) are supposed to have a maximum three-year cost of $7,400. more ›

Elsewhere in the ist-a-verse

Elsewhere in the ist-a-verse

We don't know about where you are, but it seems like spring can't decide whether or not to happen. Some days are warm, some days are cold, and sometimes you aren't sure which. Baseball may have started up (and soccer/football winding down) but it still seems cold out there. Unless it's not. Anyways, onto the -ists. more ›

The Latest with Subway Hero Wesley Autrey

The Latest with Subway Hero Wesley Autrey

The other day, we were listening to the radio and heard an ad with Wesley Autrey, the city's beloved subway hero! Autrey has done a series of public service announcements with the city's health department to encourage New Yorkers over 50 to get screened for colon cancer. From the DOH statement:

"I’m an average New Yorker over the age of 50 who could be at risk of colon cancer," said Autrey. "That’s why I’m joining this campaign. I’m very happy to be able help get this message out about colon cancer to maybe help save more lives – and I don’t have to jump onto the subway tracks to do it!"
Aw, gotta love him. There are not only radio ads, but subway and taxi ads, too. more ›

Final Days of the Auto Show

Final Days of the Auto Show

Sure, gas prices are outrageously expensive right now, but it's the last weekend of the New York International Auto Show. Besides, once you maxed out all your credit lines to buy some of the cars on display, you wouldn't be able to buy gas anyway. Keith's got an awesome set of photos on Flickr from his trip to the auto show, which is essentially car porn. There are lots more photos under the 'nyautoshow' tag as well. more ›

Can Little Cars Make It in NYC?

Can Little Cars Make It in NYC?

The NY Times wonders why there are such big cars in the city, as many auto manufacturers are bring teeny tiny "city cars" to the International Auto Show, like the Renault Zoe. Apparently, the Times didn't get the memo that NYers will try to find ways to maximize their space, from getting mini-storage at a warehouse to mini-store on wheels in the form of an SUV. Plus, bigger is always better, ain't it? Anyway, Gothamist was amused by the failed introductions of smaller cars (like the Smart car) to the U.S.; again, when New Yorkers see their American brethren driving across country in their souped up SUVs, clearly there's a envy factor. So that's the illogical explanation as to why there are not only Hummers in the city, but also those ridiculous SUV limos carting the prom kids in town. more ›
