Atlantic Antic In Brooklyn, Pickle Day On LES

As we mentioned in our GothamList newsletter (sign up here), there are bunch of fun things to do today. In Brooklyn, it's the Atlantic Antic Street Festival, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., with food, music, belly dancing, food, ponies and inflatable rides. Over on the Lower East Side, between 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., it's NYC International Pickle Day with demonstrations and plenty of pickles to sample—and you're encouraged to arrive in costume. Both are free! If you want to share your photos, tag them "gothamist" on Flickr or send them to photo@gothamist.com.

Yesterday, Gothamist attended the 34th annual Atlantic Antic along Atlantic Avenue between Hicks Street and Fourth Avenue in Brooklyn. For the uninitiated, this not your typical New York "tube sock" street fair. Sure there are some of the typical food vendors (gyros, roasted corn and Mozzarepas, natch). But unlike most other street fairs, there is a strong neighborhood presence in both food (including freebees from the new kid on the block Trader Joe’s) and vendors, along with many Brooklyn community groups and a wide variety of live music. As an added bonus this year, the New York Transit Museum had free admission along with its annual bus festival.

Yesterday, Gothamist attended the 33rd annual Atlantic Antic along Atlantic Avenue between Hicks Street and Fourth Avenue. It is not your typical New York street fair with actual local groups, business and restaurants getting involved. Plus the New York Transit Museum had free admission as well as its annual vintage bus festival.

There are many fun events today, like Ecofest at Lincoln Center and Atlantic Antic in Brooklyn, but for those interested in our fine feathered friends, we recommend you head to Central Park to check out the Parks Department's Falconry Extravaganza with the Urban Park Rangers.

REMINDER: Don't forget about the Atlantic Antic Festival, which we wrote all about yesterday.

On tap for this year’s 33rd Annual Atlantic Antic festival, taking this Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM (rain or shine, buddy) is the usual bonanza of pony rides, live music, and balloon animals. This year’s Antic has an added emphasis on food, which should hopefully make it a remedy to all the street fair food fatigue that’s been going around recently.

Tonight's the Harvest Moon! The full moon nearest the fall equinox is known as a harvest moon because the moon provided extra light for harvesting crops. For most of the year moon rise occurs about 50 minutes later each day. Because of the earth's orbital geometry, around the equinoxes the moon rises only about 30 minutes later from day to day. Since a full moon rises at the same time as the sun sets, the sky does not darken quickly for several days around the equinox, allowing for extra time to work in the fields. To see the Harvest Moon, look to the east at sunset tonight.

Feast of San Gennaro. Manhattan’s Little Italy may be constantly shifting borders and shrinking, but this event seems to get bigger every year. Plunk down $3 for a big plastic cup of Italian bianco with peaches. When you’re done sipping, you can fish out the large hunks of wine-steeped fruit with your straw. It’s worth waiting on the long lines for kettle-fried zeppolis that come by the half or full dozen, shook up in a plain brown paper bag and coated with confectioner’s sugar. Just give them a couple of minutes to cool down before you start eating- they’re about 300 degrees fresh out of the oil. September 13-27, sangennaro.org

We were heartbroken to have once again been out of town for the Atlantic Antic and all the delicacies that go with it. Happily, other bloggers have started to post their mouthwatering pictures to give us a taste of what we missed.

Gothamist doesn't miss the tired, Yuppie whining and complaining which spewed from Michael, Hope, Elliot and company in the 1980's TV hit "thirtysomething." But, we do recognize the importance of that landmark time in life.

Gothamist can hear the longing strains of Carly Simon, as we anticipate the festivities to come this Sunday, September 26th at the 30th annual Atlantic Antic.
