Whoa, perhaps Gothamist is misinterpreting the Weather Channel's pollen forecast, but it seems like they are saying today is an excellent day to get high on weed, or the weed count is high, we are a little confused. If you do decide to make a purchase in Washington Square Park, the weather is going to be better during the daylight hours than after sunset. Yet another cold front, our third in a week, will be sweeping through town tonight. Ahead of the front we can expect showers and possibly thundershowers. The Weather Service is saying a 50% chance of showers while Weather.com gives the showers only a thirty percent chance of occurring.

THEATER: Though some might balk at an outdoor performance in this muggy, thunderstormy weather, The Drilling CompaNY's version of As You Like It, the next installment of Shakespeare in the Park(ing) Lot (directed by Jesse Ontiveros), is bound to exude enough cool to counteract the waves of heat rising from the asphalt. It also helps if you show up with your own chair so you don't have to exert yourself in a scuffle to nab one of the limited number available there. - Mallory Jensen
Last year, getting off the subway and taking the usual shortcut through the parking lot home, we stumbled upon a Shakespearean production. Right there, in the glow of the early evening, in a parking lot. It was part of the annual free summer Shakespeare in the Park(ing) Lot series.
You know it’s finally summer when it’s time to spend hours in line for Shakespeare in the Park. Yes, the season is upon us: As You Like It opens Saturday! Mark Lamos, former artistic director of the Hartford Stage Company, is directing a cast that includes Brian Bedford, Lynn Collins, Jennifer Ikeda, Richard Thomas, and James Waterston in the classic tale of family quarrels, love and deception in the Forest of Ardenne. Unless you can pay $100 for a reserved seat, or you have a sucker for a boy/girlfriend who will wait in line for you, you’ll want to get to the Delacorte or the Public bright and early on the day of the show; free tickets are distributed starting at 1pm for 8pm shows and the lines get a little crazy, though with no big celebrities in this production it might be less so. Of course, sometimes standing in line is half the fun anyway because of the interesting people you meet, but you have to be ready for it. A musical adaptation of The Two Gentlemen of Verona begins in mid-August if you’d rather wait; when it was done in the early 70’s it was a big success and muscled its way out to Broadway for the Best Musical Tony. Gothamist is a fan of just about anything free, and this is a tradition you just don’t miss.
Shakespeare in the Park doesn’t start until June 25, and if you’ve gone in past years you know that even when that wait is over, you’ll still have to wait in line for ages to get the show tickets. But even though the heat might be tempting you to duck into a nice cool theater, remember, it’s only going to get worse, so you might as well be outside while you can. And there are a surprising number of theatre companies who are getting the jump on the Public Theater, which puts on Shakespeare in the Park, on the outdoor thing. You’re not likely to have to wait in line much for these, either.
