Bad news, art nerds. The weather forecast for tomorrow is so bad that this year's Art Parade—always an eye-popping explosion of bizarre costumes, imaginative floats, and paper mache—has been canceled. A spokesperson for Deitch Projects, which puts on the annual event, tells us that normally the parade is "rain or shine, but the forecast is so bad and they're predicting such high winds we have to cancel." Deitch is discussing the possibility of getting a parade permit for next spring instead. In the meantime, savor our photos from last year and try not to dwell on what Hanna hath taken away. (Like the Ferris Bueller float!)

The best way to reuse plastic bags is to let your young children play with them! They make wonderful and amusing toys. A great favorite of all children is playing 'Spaceman', using a plastic bag as a make believe Flash Gordon style helmet!
Naturally, emilydickinson was being sarcastic when she left the comment, but that sarcasm wasn't picked up by all.

Books, or at least book shelves, must be on this couple's wedding registry: The Post has a cute story about a couple whose engagement took place at the Strand Bookstore. Joshua Reich and Shianling King "always told friends they met at the Strand," but they actually met online - their first date was supposed to be at the Museum of Modern Art, but the lines were so long that they went to the Strand instead....

Yesterday we headed to the 3rd Annual Art Parade, an event that manages to make West Broadway a little more colorful for an hour each year. The scene is one of surrealism and modern day statements.

TIP: According to Paper's Mr. Mickey, Chloë Sevigny is having a tag sale on her block this Saturday. We're guessing there will be lots of vintage Balenciaga. Check out her apartment in House & Garden...pretty nice!

Sure, September 8th may seem like it's ages away as we slowly sweat our way through the summer, but the Deitch Art Parade is just around the corner. Even though it's taking place on the aforementioned date, the deadline for submissions is July 20th.

We recently got the new Creative Time book, aptly titled Creative Time: The Book. Unable to wrap our heads around what on earth The Urban Visual Recording Machine was after reading about it, surely we'd understand after getting our hands on the book where it plays the protagonist.

New York has never celebrated the forms of dance that it has birthed until now: Voguing, Jazz, the Jitterbug, Punk, Gothic--even Salsa was birthed in the Cuban Communities in this great city. And it is now time for Dance. New York has enjoyed the last two years of a September Art Parade and in May 2007, we can finally honor Dance in a similar fashion.

New York area Wal-Mart foes, mission semi-accomplished! CEO H. Lee Scott Jr. spoke to NY Times reporters and editors yesterday, where he said something unexpected: "I don’t care if we are ever here." And "here" meant New York City. Or Manhattan, as a spokesperson later clarified. Here's the NY Times on his remarks:

Mr. Scott said yesterday that the opposition to Wal-Mart in New York, Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles and other cities had a common thread: “The glue is the unions.”

Reader Nick sent us this insane image from his morning commute. As it's not totally safe for work (we're being cautious), click here to view the whole image. And here's Nick's note:

So I was on the L train this morning on my way to work, and these guys board somewhere in Williamsburg with a huge wooden painting, with holes for people to put their faces like at a carnival. What do you think?
We think that's some crazy carnival! Our bet is that it's going to a hospital or experimental theater - it's too late for Mother's Day.

Yesterday we posted about the kindie rock scene in Park Slope, and today we discover...baby disco at Southpaw! As described on the site:

Where's Reverend Billy? That quote is from today's NY Times article about people trying to stop a Wal-Mart from coming to the Bronx. Nevermind that Wal-Mart hasn't officially said that they'd like to bring one of its store to the borough - activists are just making sure it never ever happens. This is in spite of the majority of Bronx residents saying they would welcome a Wal-Mart.

- And the Fifth Avenue Apple Store welcomed its millionth visitor, Elizabeth Rodriguez

Julia Levy was on the scene for yesterday's Art Parade and filed this report:

If you're going to be in Soho this afternoon - or you're interested in some public spectacle - go to West Broadway at Houston and see the Deitch Art Parade at 4PM. Expect wild and fun floats and performers. The parade will go from Houston to Grand Street, all along West Broadway.

- Some of L.A. gets a blackout; so far, it doesn't seem to be Al Qaeda but rather some "overzealous cable cutting"... however, it's unlikely that blackout babies will be conceived, since power should be going up soon

Fashionistas and music snobs descend upon the city over the next week with both CMJ and Fashion Week starting. We'll most likely only be attending the former. Before it begins though, we'll ease into the hectic schedule with a few of the following events...even if we should be resting up for the week ahead.
