  • Yankees 10, Blue Jays 5: Yankees win! Th-uuu-h Yankees win! John Sterling's signature call -- -- as sad as that is -- got its start when the Yankees stunk in the early 1990s and only won once in a while. That version of the call can be brought back, for one night at least. A five-run first inning held up until the Yankees tacked on four more in the ninth. Alex Rodriguez, made a story by the local papers whenever possible, created some controversy by apparently pretending to be a shortstop calling off Jays third baseman Howie Clark while running around the bases. The ball dropped, extending the inning. Don't expect to hear Sterling sound like a goat on an electric fence -- Rick Reilly's words -- this weekend when the Yanks visit Boston.
  • That’s what Benitez did, coming in with a 4-3 lead in the twelfth and issuing a leadoff walk to Jose Reyes. Benitez showed his characteristic pose and balked Reyes to second. Reyes was on third when Benitez balked again, sending Reyes home with the tying run. At that point, you could see what would happen next. Benitez, totally unnerved, finally served up a meatball to Carlos Delgado and Delgado crushed it for the game-winning home run.

In the 9th inning, with former Mets closer Armando Benitez on the mound, David Wright stepped to the plate with bases loaded and one out. Any long-time Mets fan knows what comes next. Not because of what Wright can do, but of the torture that Benitez put fans through while he was with the Mets. Wright hit a two-run double, giving the Mets the go ahead runs. Oh Armando, how we missed you so.

-Giants 7 Mets 6 12inn: It was a game that had a lot of familiar events. Armando Benitez blowing a save and the Mets coming back in dramatic fashion, but the ending was different. Jose Valentin and Lastings Milledge homered in the tenth off of Benitez to bring New York back from a 6-4 deficit, but Pedro Feliz knocked in the winning run in the twelfth to give the Giants a series win.

Sometimes a team can win, but yet lose in the grand scheme of things. That's what happened to the Mets yesterday afternoon. While they defeated the Giants 9-7 in 11 innings and won a series for the first time at Pac Bell SBC AT&T Park, Brian Bannister went down with a hamstring injury in the 6th inning. Bannister, a rookie that helped the Mets in their hot start, had to be helped off the field after lying on the ground after scoring a run in the 6th.

The Yankees got younger on Thursday, but did they get any better? After organizational meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Yankees made their first changes, cutting ties with relievers, Paul Quantrill and Mike Stanton. Both were designated for assignment meaning the Yankees have ten days to trade or release them. Jason Anderson, a former Yankee prospect who was traded to the Mets for Armando Benitez and Wayne Franklin, a 31-year-old lefty specialist, will take their place on the roster for now.

The runs for the Mets came in an odd fashion last night. In the 2nd inning, the Mets had three sacrifice flies, becoming the first team in the National League to have three sac flies in an inning. How did they get three? A fly ball to Bernie Williams would have allowed a run to score but Williams misplayed the ball and didn't catch it. The inning was extended with the error and the play was still scored a sacrifice.

Aaron Heilman started the game for the Mets and had a performance reminiscent of his one hitter two starts ago. Heilman pitched 7 innings of 2-hit ball and only allowed 1 run to the Braves. It looked like Heilman would be the tough luck loser until the 6th inning when the Mets knocked Horacio Ramirez out of the game by picking up 5 runs. Mike Piazza had an RBI double, Cliff Floyd had a two run homer, and Wright added his own two-run home run before the inning was over. The 5 run inning was the 7th time the Mets have scored 5 runs in an inning this season.

The only bright spot for the Mets was Wilson Degado, who had an impressive game offensively. Batting 8th and playing shortstop, Delgado went 3 for 4, knocking in four runs and hitting a home run in the 4th. Without Delgado, the Mets wouldn't have scored. Delgado was one of the players that the Mets acquired in the Roger Cedeno trade. Is anyone missing Kaz Matsui now?

Piazza's injury is currently diagnosed as a sprain, but will be re-examined later today. His injury makes one wonder if the Mets can succeed without him. Last year, Piazza missed nearly half the season with a groin injury, which didn't help the Mets. Piazza is playing first base to lengthen his career and keep him playing every day. With the injury, the Mets lose a major cog in their offense.

Entering the bottom of the ninth, the Mets turned to Braden Looper, the Former Marlin to close the game. Three singles in a row by the Marlins and an error by Mike Cameron led to a tie game. Lenny Harris, a former Met hit a single to take a one-run lead. In the bottom of the inning, Armando Benitez, also a former Met, closed out the game, dropping the Mets back to .500 and into a tie with the Marlins for 3rd. Benitez's performance was something the Mets never saw consistently when he was in Flushing, which was clear when fans booed him when he came onto the field.
