Google may have gotten the jump start on April Fools' Day yesterday with their (actually quite fun) 8-Bit Google Maps for Nintendo, but BBC had the last laugh. Eschewing all subtly or regard for the sanctity of "mocking and harassing the ignorant, the stubborn, and the curmudgeonly," Redditors noticed that BBC instead slapped together the above deadpan news bulletin. THIS is how you do April Fools' Day, Russell Simmons.
[Update] BBC Successfully Trolls April Fools' Day
Video: Google Maps "Now Available" In 8-Bit Nintendo Style
It seems Google has fired the first April Fools Day shot early by introducing their latest product: Google Maps in 8-Bit for Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). For those who want a "sneak peak" at the game before it hits stores, you can click the "Quest" box in the top right corner of Google Maps for a trial. Watch an intro video below, and check out some screen shots above.
Video: Gullible People Unite! The History Of April Fools' Day
The stupidest non-religious annual tradition is almost upon us: tomorrow is April Fools' Day, and some of you will likely be pranked by your absolutely hilarious relatives, co-workers and acquaintances. For anyone who loves regaling people at parties with stories about how gullible they are, we recommend unplugging your computer, avoiding all calls, and coming up with better small talk topics for the future. For everyone else, we recommend you EDUCATE yourself with this informative history video below. Unless of course this video is some sort of early prank itself...
Five More April Fools Day Hijinks For The Road
Oh what a merry time we had today on this first of April, taking full advantage of the fooles and concocting hilarious gags that will fuel months of mass emails from Grandpa. We know you cannot get enough of these hijinks, so here are five more spoofs that are funnier than a suburban dad in a church parking lot.
Threatening April Fools Day Email Freaks Out Albany Lawmakers
April Fools Day can be a stressful day for many, between the Improv Everywhere faux-attack videos and the actually-not-so-ridiculous dog highchairs. It must be especially tough for politicians, who are used to receiving lots of strange mail on a good day. Assembly Democratic Speaker Sheldon Silver was one of a handful of politicians to receive one such rambling, threatening email today, and as with everything today, police weren't sure how seriously to take it.
Starbucks Announces Mobile Delivery Service, Spelt Is Carcinogenic (And Other Food Things That Didn't Happen)
April Fools jokes aren't just about fake Playmobil sets and Jar-Jar-related violence, there are loads of food pranks today too! Though none quite matches last year's brilliant In-N-Out hoax some certainly don't suck. Desperate Chefs Wives and Starbucks on scooters, anyone?
Today, The Guggenheim Got Painted Red (And Other Things That Didn't Happen)
We're almost through April Fools Day and so far there's no sign of a In-N-Out Burger moving to town. But there's plenty of pranking happening out there today, from the Guggenheim to Improv Everywhere. Click through for some of the better ones.
April Fools' Day Parade: Beating A Dead Horse Edition
Can you believe this is still happening? For the 26th year in a row, the April Fools' Day Committee has announced their parade, which will not take place on April 1st, or ever, because it is a joke. They tell us the parade will start at 5th Avenue and 59th Street at noon on the 1st (rain or shine!) and end in Washington Square Park. Once the little 2.6 mile walk is done, a King and Queen of Fools will be crowned (our money is on parade participants Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan!).
Not-So-Naked Subway Ride
Did anyone really believe that the Improv Everywhere troupe rode the subway naked? The video was posted on April Fools Day, but it seemed like the NY Times may have fallen for it... they even called the cops! The gullible Grey Lady was told by an NYPD spokesperson that no laws was broken, and they confirm, saying: "We checked, and sure enough, the definition of 'exposure of a person,' a violation under section 245.01 of the state’s penal code" (heh) "states that the law does not apply to any person entertaining or performing in a play, exhibition, show or entertainment." Alas, as we pointed out yesterday, the pranksters were all wearing nude-colored undies. And underwear fetishists (if you even exist) take note: IE head Charlie Todd says an uncensored video will be made available soon.
Google Has Their Fun With The Fools
The best thing about Google's April Fools jokes (well, except for this lame Topeka one), is that they put hours and hours of time and brainpower into really following all the way through with them. Like this one, for instance, which promises an app that can translate your pet's thoughts.
Yes, More Pranks: Starbucks Introduces Ridiculous Sizes
Looks like Starbucks has a sense of humor too? In response to actual requests for more sizes, Starbucks unveiled their "new" Plenta and Micra sizes to go with Tall, Grande and Venti. The Micra actually makes sense as an espresso cup, holding just 2 oz of coffee, while the Plenta delivers enough coffee to make a consumer go into cardiac arrest in record time at 128 oz (we don't even want to think about the calorie count). Other suggested uses for a Plenta cup include rain hat, planter or yoga block.
Mayor Bloomberg's Twitter Has A Sense Of Humor
From the NYC Mayor's Office Twitter: "Mayor announces plan to close City budget by selling naming rights to Central Park, East River and Ed Koch. #aprilfools" Definitely hilarious, but we thought maybe they'd Tweet that The Situation was taking Ed Skyler's old position—The Situation and Mayor B are tight, you know.
NYU Accidentally Makes Fools Out of 489 Prospectives
NYU sent an email to nearly 500 students this week that they should pack their bags and get ready to make their way over to Greenwich Village this fall as members of Wagner School's next graduate class. An hour later, the school sent another email telling those same students to scratch that—they were actually rejected. To add insult to injury, the erroneous admission letters were sent out on Wednesday—April Fool's Day. A university spokesman said, “We know that any application process is accompanied by anxiety and we sincerely regret any misunderstanding, false expectations, or additional disappointment this error may have caused.” One of the students taken for the roller coaster ride called it the "Worst April Fools' joke ever." The university is investigating how the error occurred in order to prevent it from reoccurring.
TV News Falls for April Fools Funeral Prank!
Every year the Improv Everywhere crew executes some prank to make fools of us all on this day, but the one they put together this year at Greenwood Cemetery serves as an example of an April Fools' Day joke done well (because so often these things go horribly wrong). They announce: "For our latest mission, 30 Improv Everywhere agents found a random funeral in the obituary section of the newspaper and turned it into the best funeral ever. We picked a man who had very few surviving relatives and then showed up to his funeral to make it truly awesome."
