Tonight, Gothamist will definitely be watching Tabloid Wars, the reality show that follows the innerworkings of the Daily News. While the reviews have noted it's perhaps more mild than we'd want it, we're excited to see the city beat reporters in action. New York magazine's John Leonard wrote in his review, "By the end of the second hour, you will probably decide, as I did, that the tireless Kerry Burke is our hero, not only because he sounds public-school instead of preppy and always talks to strangers with respect, but because he hates celebrity stories."

), and the landlord threatened eviction over the cats, since the lease states there can only be two. The Times reporter noted that there was a "heavy cat smell" in the apartment - and can you imagine the craziness during shedding season? The sad thing is that Animal Care & Control is removing cats every day, the cats will be killed if they are not adopted in three days! We hope some no kill shelters claim the kitties.
My boyfriend and I live in a studio apartment with all our windows facing the backyard, where our landlord keeps his two big and very, very loud dogs. The backyard is pretty small and the dogs are left there for days at a time, whatever the weather, so it seems that the barking is more of a cry for help than anything else. They go at it for 10 to 20 minutes at a time, several times a day, and even more frustratingly - late at night. When they're not barking, they're whining, and there's just no hiding from the noise - the acoustics make it seem like they're in our bedroom. Sometimes, there's a neighbor's dog out in a nearby yard, the three of them bark together for what seems like hours.
Last year, Gothamist reported on a Bay Ridge bike messenger who was arrested for animal cruelty, after beating and torturing his fiancee's cat to death. Yesterday, James Whalen was sentenced to five years probation, plus continued treatment in alcohol abuse and anger management programs, instead of going to jail. Gothamist hopes that Whalen is truly sorry, and we hope that people realize that abusing animals is a punishable crime. Whalen also said that his relationship with his fiancee deteriorated after he killed her cat, and their wedding was called off; he said that she didn't want anything else to do with him, which really isn't that surprising since he KILLED her cat.
And while we don't condone cockfighting, the Seinfeld episode, The Little Jerry, is brilliant.
Also in Yonkers, but on the Metro-North: A 10-foot boa constrictor was on laying on the tracks. Before the MTA could remove the boa, a train came through and "bifurcated" the snake. And some deer were found dead near Metro-North tracks, too. Warning to animals: Living in Yonkers can be dangerous.
This is a horrible case, but it reinforces both the importance of the ASPCA, which is a resource to educate people about how to take care of their animals, as well as find people who mistreat them, and the fact that animal cruelty is not tolerated. Gothamist has seen Special Agent Pentangelo has arrested people people, as one of our favorite shows is Animal Precinct on Animal Planet. His bio is here (here's the ASPCA's page on the show as well).
Governor Pataki tries to secure the animal lovers' vote by signing a bill forcing dog owners to give their pets proper shelter in "inclement weather [including but not limited to rain, sleet, ice, snow or wind, as well as extreme heat and cold]," or else they will face fines between $50 and $100 for their first offense ($100 to $200 for a second offense). Of course, the ASPCA is thrilled with the decision, as they had been trying to pass similar laws without luck. One dog owner in Long Island who also owned a cat wondered why there wasn't a similar law for cats, but then answered his own question by saying, "Cats kind of know when to come in. They're smarter."
Yes, there can never be too many stories about this...along the same lines fo Jake's post about the cockfighting ring arrests and following up our post about roosters in Harlem, there was an episode of Animal Precinct where they found cocks being trained for fighting, and it really isn't very pretty - the roosters are pumped on vitamins and shaved in various ways.
