COMEDY: In November, shortly after the WGA strike sent SNL to reruns, the cast took the UCB Theater stage for an off-air show. If you missed that one, there's a chance to catch some of the cast doing stand-up at Comix tonight. The site says "sold out" but the people at the venue say they just added more tickets! So give a call and enjoy "An Evening with the Writers and Performers from Saturday Night Live." The money raised will go toward the Writers Guild of America. And yes, Andy Samberg (pictured with cat) will be there. Andy Samberg, originally scheduled to be there, has dropped out of the show. more ›

THEATER: The esteemed Classical Theatre of Harlem is reviving Peter Weiss’s masterpiece Marat/Sade. The dizzying action takes place in an asylum in France, where the infamous Marquis de Sade is sequestered in 1808. To pass the time, he directs a play about the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat during the revolution. His asylum casting pool yields up some magnificent performances, though the production is almost squelched by the hospital administrator, a tool of Napoleon’s post-revolutionary regime. In the right hands, which CTH certainly has, the whole production is a multi-layered feast of subversion. - John Del Signore more ›

    Cartoons at MoMa

Despite the fact that we saw Hedwig, we hadn't heard of Emily Hubley until we read about An Evening with her (and her friends) at MoMa. This may be because we consume most of our animation in the form of Family Guy. However, chances are if you can have people spend money on an entire evening with you then you're pretty awesome. more ›

Miscellaneous Shows of the Comedy Variety

Miscellaneous Shows of the Comedy Variety

Today Gothamist has quite the conundrum on its hands…with so many good shows happening this week all over our fair city, how do we narrow it all down? There’s a bit of a hodge-podge of things happening tonight, so rather than file them all under comedy, it’s probably safer to refer to them as a canon of miscellany. more ›

Literati Roundup: Highbrow, Lowbrow, and some Eggersism In Between

It's quite the red letter week for us bookish types, with the prestigious, sometimes baffling, and oft-maligned National Book Awards dinner and awards ceremony tomorrow night where trophies will be bestowed, granted, totally robbed, whatever, at the Marriott Marquis. To that end, critic A.O. Scott has an interesting article about the contradictions and complications inherent to the awards, Medal Fatigue (registration required). Garrison Keillor is the Master of Ceremonies which, frankly, is why Gothamist wishes we had tickets. If you do have a seat at the Ivory Tower's table, enjoy and report back to us lowly slobs. The odds on the fiction winner have already been calculated by New York Mag, with Gaitskill and Doctorow as the favourites to win. It's just like Belmont, really. more ›

Food Events: Barolo's Evening Under The Stars

(An Evening Under The Stars) at Barolo and found everything we adore. The crowd was eclectic: Italian ex-pats and neighborhood holdovers from when Soho wasn’t a mall mingling with young models and magazine types, and we enjoyed the spectacular space, the back of the lot Barolo is situated on, opening onto Grand Street. We missed many of the hors d’oeuvres but heard the lovely Veinmelter play an acoustic set above the crowd, piquant like any arrangement of space in the city. more ›
