Video: 60 Minutes' Andy Rooney Says Good Bye
Last night was the end of an era for television news magazines. As had been previously announced CBS staple 60 Minutes aired its final regular opinion piece by the man who is arguably our nation's greatest curmudgeon, Andy Rooney. Aired along with a loving sendoff and retrospective interview conducted by Morley Safer, the 92-year-old Rooney's last report from his (sadly clean) desk wasn't too different from the pieces he has been doing seemingly since the dawn of television. Which is to say, please for goodness sake if you see the man eating in a restaurant let him be!
Andy Rooney Is Leaving 60 Minutes And He's Probably Not Happy About It
CBS News announced, "Andy Rooney will announce on this Sunday's '60 Minutes' that it will be his last regular appearance on the broadcast. Rooney, 92, has been featured on "60 Minutes" since 1978. He will make the announcement in his regular essay at the end of the program, his 1097th original essay for '60 Minutes'. It will be preceded by a segment in which Rooney looks back on his career in an interview with Morley Safer." However, Newsday's TV reporter Verne Gay is suspicious about this announcement.
Andy Rooney Was Drinking Lots Of Coffee Before It Was Good For Your Health
One of our Sunday evening rituals, when football or basketball hasn't pushed 60 Minutes back so far that our TiVo doesn't grab the end of it, is to let out our inner curmudgeon along with the ancient and awesome Andy Rooney—seriously, it takes great skill to be that crotchety! So imagine how pleased we were to see him cite a post on Gothamist during his rant last night about how "drinking some things that used to be thought to be bad for us are now considered good and drinks which were thought to be good are now considered bad."
Video of the Day: Rooney Mouths Off on Public Art
Ever wonder what Andy Rooney has to say about all the public art displayed in the city? Well, here he is mouthing off on what he calls "pretentious nonsense," amongst other things.
The First Rule Of Century Club Is...
There's yet another interesting bit in this weeks City section FYI column, this time on one of our fair city's old school private clubs, the Century Association. Housed in a land-marked 1891 McKim Mead & White Beaux Arts building on W. 43rd street the association (also called the Century Club) was "originally an arts and letters society founded in 1847." The invitation-only club admitted its first female members in 1988 and currently has around 2,4000 members "many from New York's cultural, professional and political worlds. The 2005 membership directory included Mayor Bloomberg, Brooke Astor, Ric Burns, Robert A. Caro, Chuck Close, Betsy Gotbaum, Henry Kissinger, Robert Morgenthau, David Rockefeller, Andy Rooney and Arthur Schlesinger Jr." Former members include Franklin D. Roosevelt.
