Former Ranger, Mathieu Schneider scored first and although New York tied things up at 1-1, they never got back in the game. The Ducks scored two times in the second to break things open and Todd Bertuzzi iced it at 12:13 of the third with his 12th goal of the year.

Shortage of Keys to City Reported as A-Rod Gets One
Quick, call the locksmith! Before Thursday's Yankees-Tigers game, Mayor Bloomberg gave away yet another key to the city. Just last week, Bloomberg gave a ceremonial key to Mets pitcher Tom Glavine for winning his 300th career game. Thursday's key was for Alex Rodriguez hitting his 500th career home run. Rodriguez said that the key "will be something I hold dear to me for the rest of my life." In addition to receiving the key...
Last Night's Action: It's Getting Wild

- Yankees 5 Toronto 4: There are 50 games left in the season and the Yankees have come back from the dead. 38-41 on July 1st, they have gone 24-9 to move 12-games over .500 and wipeout an 8-1/2 game deficit in the wild card standings.

Last Night's Action: A Complete Win
- Yankees 5 White Sox 1:If the Yankees are going to get off the deck and get back into playoff contention, they will need a lot more nights like this. Chien-Ming Wang was brilliant, going the distance while allowing only one run and six baserunners. Wang also struck out four as he cruised to an easy win, his fifth of the season.

Last Night's Action: The Ice Report
-Rangers 4 Devils 2: Maybe all the Rangers’ defense needed was the return of Darius Kasparaitis. Benched since the start of the season for conditioning issues, Darius was put back into the lineup on his 34th birthday and played a solid game in the New York victory.
Subway Fare - At Home - Red Salsa
The Sunday Mexican cart scene we mentioned last week had Gothamist thinking about tacos all this week – again. After our new friend Pam asked us to provide her with a salsa recipe over a communal table at the continuing downhill experience that unfortunately is New Green Bo, we decided to highlight our favorite red salsa this week for Subway Fare.
Where Did The Bats Go?
Was the first game of the season an aberration or are the Yankees simply a victim of superior pitching? Does Gary Sheffield need another visit from Barry Bonds’ trainer? These are the questions they face as they look at a 1-3 start after losing last night in Anaheim 4-1.
A Bad Night By The Bay
The Yankees imploded last night with shoddy defense and poor relief pitching, falling to the A’s 9-4. Jaret Wright was the loser while Joe Kennedy got the win.
Bounced From WBC
Say it ain't so! The United States has been eliminated from the World Baseball Classic. Great news for George Steinbrenner, bad news for US baseball. Last night in Anaheim (or Los Angeles as the Angels would have you call it), Mexico defeated the US, 2-1. In the loss, the US team only managed three hits off 8 Mexican pitchers. If you're scoring at home, that's a single by Junior Griffey, a double by Chipper Jones and another double by Jeff Francoeur. The loss put the United states at 1-2 in 2nd round play and in a three-way tie with Mexico and Japan. But the same International Baseball Federation rules that put the US into the 2nd round, sent Japan to the semi-finals where they will play South Korea. Cuba will play the Dominican Republic in the other semi-final matchup.
Have Mercy!
It’s a good thing they put the mercy rule into the WBC because if they hadn’t, the U.S. would probably still be hitting. Fired up from their defeat at the hands of Canada, the U.S. squad demolished South Africa 17-0 in a game that was shortened to five innings. Ken Griffey exploded for two homers and seven RBI’s while Roger Clemens gave up 1 hit while striking out six over 4 1/3 innings.
New York/New York
Peter Sykora was openly campaigning to join the Rangers. He had watched their early-season success and he wanted to get out of Anaheim. His wish was granted Sunday and he immediately made his presence felt in the Rangers 4-2 victory over Calgary. Sykora scored a goal, had an assist and manned the point on the Rangers’ power play unit. The win puts the Rangers five points out of first place with about half the season remaining.
The Angels Even Things Up
The Angels used some timely hitting and some poor defense by the Yankees to even their best-of-five ALDS series with a 5-3 victory Wednesday night. Orlando Cabrera delivered the key hit, a two-run single in the seventh inning that give the Angels the lead for good. Bengie Molina added two hits and a home run in the eighth.
If It's the Playoffs, It's Time for the Mayor to Bet
- A case of boysenberry jam and a bucket of Mrs. Knott's chicken from Knott's Berry FarmThis is like a big FU, implying that we have no sun and beachy good times and can't sing have a theme song by Phantom Planet. Gothamist wonders who gets the swimwear and surfboard when NYC will collect the booty - we really don't want to be forced into seeing some Mayor B photo op where he's in swimwear...though wiping out on a surfboard is another matter entirely. And will his staff act from The O.C. script - clearly, Mayor B would be Caleb Nichols.
Tidy 1-0 Start
The Yankees could not have asked for much more in their 4-2 win over the Angels in Game 1 of the American League Division Series. They got a solid pitching performance from Mike Mussina, enough runs in the first two innings off Bartolo Colon, and a competetent bullpen performance to close it out. With the win, the Yankees have taken the first of two games played in Anaheim, and they hold the hammer since two of the next three, if necessary, will be at home.
Yankees-Angels Preview
Most people were not expecting the Yankees to recover from their 11-19 start, so it is no surprise that most experts are picking the Angels to win their ALDS matchup, which starts tonight. After all, the Yankees are opening up a postseason series on the road for the first time since 2001 and the lack of home field advantage might tip the balance in a series where both teams are fairly evenly matched.
Swept
Who would have thought that the Yankees would have reason to feel proud about a sweep over the Devil Rays? Well, the Yankees shouldn't feel proud, just satisfied, with their performance in St. Petersberg this week. Given their struggles against the Devil Rays this season, a sweep comes as a pleasant development, but that just shows how inconsistent this Yankee club has played all year. With Boston's loss to Oakland, the Yankees trail the Red Sox by just 1.5 games in the American League East and Oakland by a game in the wild card. Should be an exciting finish.
Yanks Drop Third Straight
The Yankees can’t wait to escape from California. They may have the dumbest name in baseball, but the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim can play baseball and on Saturday night they thumped the Yankees for the third straight game, this time winning 8-6.
Yankees at the Break
Back in March, Gothamist wrote that, “(this edition) of the Yankees should be an improvement over last year’s, especially when you consider the starting pitching.” Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case. High-priced imports, Randy Johnson, Carl Pavano and Jaret Wright have combined for a 15-14 record with an ERA well over 4.50. Wright has not pitched since April and will probably not do so again until August. If you want to find a reason the Yankees are only 46-40, look no further.
Error Ends Mets Homestand with Loss
Yesterday's loss came after a thrilling victory on Saturday night which saw an inside the park home run by Marlon Anderson and a game winning three-run homer by Cliff Floyd. The series against the Angels was a litmus test for the Mets as they could test themselves against one of the better teams in the American League.
A Rod Annihilates the Angels
Lost in the glare of A Rod’s amazing performance was another solid outing by Carl Pavano. Pavano mixed and matched his pitches and while he was not overpowering, his stuff was good enough when it had to be; especially in the fifth inning when he escaped from a second and third, no one out and reigning MVP Vlad Guerrero at the plate situation by only allowing one run.
Yanks Look to End Three Game Losing Streak
In Tuesday's game, Javier Vasquez took the mound against Brad Radke. Vasquez once again disappointed. He must be the most disappointing 13 game winner in the history of baseball. Gothamist can't remember ever watching him pitch a game and thinking to ourselves that he was unhittable. He racks up cheap wins and has an E.R.A of over 4 runs. When he was in Montreal, he once one of baseball's best kept secrets. Now in the Bronx, he can't seem to get it together. Now don't get us wrong, if there are two foxholes and Jeff Weaver is manning one and Vasquez the other, Gothamist is diving in with Vasquez. Vasquez, though has done little to impress Yankee fans.
Yanks Take Two of Three from Seattle
On Friday night the Yankees bats exploded for eleven runs. Bernie Williams continued his hot hitting, launching his 15th homerun of the year. Ruben Sierra hit a grand slam and Jorge Posada added a solo shot. The game was 10-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning. Jon Lieber was able to hold on to the ten run cushion and go eight innings for his ninth win of the year. Lieber allowed seven hits, 3 earned runs and zero walks while striking out 4 in the 11-3 win.
Yanks Continue to Roll
The Yankees took three games over the weekend from a struggling Toronto team to increase their record to 71-39 overall and expand their lead over the Red Sox to 10.5 games. In the first three games of the four game series the Yankees outscored Toronto 25-6. Friday 11-4, Saturday 6-0 and Sunday 8-2
Yanks Start Second Half with a Bang
If you asked Jeremy Bonderman to hold the Yankees to four hits after seven innings, he probably would have told you he would be winning the game when he was replaced. Unfortunately, those four hits were all solo home runs by the New York Yankees and ended up being the difference in the 5-1 Yankee win.
