Say it ain't so! The United States has been eliminated from the World Baseball Classic. Great news for George Steinbrenner, bad news for US baseball. Last night in Anaheim (or Los Angeles as the Angels would have you call it), Mexico defeated the US, 2-1. In the loss, the US team only managed three hits off 8 Mexican pitchers. If you're scoring at home, that's a single by Junior Griffey, a double by Chipper Jones and another double by Jeff Francoeur. The loss put the United states at 1-2 in 2nd round play and in a three-way tie with Mexico and Japan. But the same International Baseball Federation rules that put the US into the 2nd round, sent Japan to the semi-finals where they will play South Korea. Cuba will play the Dominican Republic in the other semi-final matchup. more ›

It’s a good thing they put the mercy rule into the WBC because if they hadn’t, the U.S. would probably still be hitting. Fired up from their defeat at the hands of Canada, the U.S. squad demolished South Africa 17-0 in a game that was shortened to five innings. Peter Sykora was openly campaigning to join the Rangers. He had watched their early-season success and he wanted to get out of Anaheim. His wish was granted Sunday and he immediately made his presence felt in the Rangers 4-2 victory over Calgary. Sykora scored a goal, had an assist and manned the point on the Rangers’ power play unit. The win puts the Rangers five points out of first place with about half the season remaining. more ›

The Angels used some timely hitting and some poor defense by the Yankees to even their best-of-five ALDS series with a 5-3 victory Wednesday night. Orlando Cabrera delivered the key hit, a two-run single in the seventh inning that give the Angels the lead for good. Bengie Molina added two hits and a home run in the eighth. more ›

Most people were not expecting the Yankees to recover from their 11-19 start, so it is no surprise that most experts are picking the Angels to win their ALDS matchup, which starts tonight. Who would have thought that the Yankees would have reason to feel proud about a sweep over the Devil Rays? Well, the Yankees shouldn't feel proud, just satisfied, with their performance in St. Petersberg this week. Given their struggles against the Devil Rays this season, a sweep comes as a pleasant development, but that just shows how inconsistent this Yankee club has played all year. With Boston's loss to Oakland, the Yankees trail the Red Sox by just 1.5 games in the American League East and Oakland by a game in the wild card. Should be an exciting finish. more ›

In Tuesday's game, Javier Vasquez took the mound against Brad Radke. Vasquez once again disappointed. He must be the most disappointing 13 game winner in the history of baseball. Gothamist can't remember ever watching him pitch a game and thinking to ourselves that he was unhittable. He racks up cheap wins and has an E.R.A of over 4 runs. When he was in Montreal, he once one of baseball's best kept secrets. Now in the Bronx, he can't seem to get it together. Now don't get us wrong, if there are two foxholes and Jeff Weaver is manning one and Vasquez the other, Gothamist is diving in with Vasquez. On Friday night the Yankees bats exploded for eleven runs. Bernie Williams continued his hot hitting, launching his 15th homerun of the year. Ruben Sierra hit a grand slam and Jorge Posada added a solo shot. The game was 10-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning. Jon Lieber was able to hold on to the ten run cushion and go eight innings for his ninth win of the year. Lieber allowed seven hits, 3 earned runs and zero walks while striking out 4 in the 11-3 win. more ›

The Yankees took three games over the weekend from a struggling Toronto team to increase their record to 71-39 overall and expand their lead over the Red Sox to 10.5 games.
