Just as we were looking over amNewYork's story on CBGB, sad news has come in. Hilly Kristal, who opened the club in 1973, died yesterday. Battling cancer for some time, the 75 year old had quite the last year -- seeing many celebrate his legendary club upon its closing last October.

The city continued clean-up at the site of Wednesday's Midtown steam pipe explosion at East 41st and Lexington Avenue. Vanderbilt Avenue has been reopened, and Third Avenue was scheduled to be reopened today. Clean up of 42nd Street between Third and Park should be done by Monday, while clean up of Lexington between 42nd and 43rd should be done by the end of the weekend. Here's what the city said about the asbestos samples:

The Department of Environmental Protection tests of 12 air samples showed none of them testing positive for asbestos. The steam, humidity, and rainfall probably helped the situation because it prevented asbestos particles from becoming airborne.

The American Cancer Society reported yesterday that city minorities are more likely to die from certain types of cancers than other New Yorkers. In addition to the fact that certain malignancies occur more frequently in some ethnicities, the report, issued after a three day conference in New Orleans, shares that minorities are also less likely to get preventative treatment. And the treatment they do receive once diagnosed tends to be less aggressive. This is due to a combination of factors, including language barriers, cultural apprehensions about seeking medical care, and a fear among immigrants that their citizenship status may be called into question if they go the hospital.

business out of the dorms, as Julia Diaco found out with her drug operation. Anyway, Gothamist has this suggestion for He, at least for the lack of cash issue: Photoshop and/or a halfway decent color copier.

In other Law & Order news, Michael Imperioli, aka "Christufuh" on the Sopranos, will be guest-starring three of the last four episodes of the season. He'll be playing a detective who Detective Fontana, played by Dennis Farina, is paired with while Detective Green is filming Rent in San Francisco (yes, yes, it's actually Jesse L. Martin). This is the first time on Law & Order that there's been a guest detective (Law & Order: Criminal Intent did have a guest second banana detective to Vincent D'Onofrio's Detective Goren when Kathryne Erbe was pregnant), and we'll have to finally summon up the courage to bug Imperioli the next time we see him in TriBeCa.
