After the death of New York Rangers' enforcer Derek Boogaard from a toxic mixture of oxycodone and alcohol last spring, Boogaard's family donated his brain to the Sports Legacy Institute at Boston University. The results of the examination showed that Boogaard's brain showed surprisingly advanced signs of Chronic Traumatic Encephalophay, or CTE. Found in boxers, football players and hockey players, CTE is a degenerative disease similar to Alzheimer's. Dr. Ann McKee, a neuropathologist at SLI who has examined the brains of over 80 athletes, tells the Times: "To see this amount? That a 'wow' moment."

Subway Amputation Victim Suffered From Alzheimer's
Yesterday we reported that an elderly man suffered an amputation after falling into the subway tracks at 14th Street and Broadway, and today more upsetting details have emerged. The victim was actually 84-year-old Anatoliy Zilberman, a partially-blind resident of an assisted-living facility on 23rd Street who suffered from Alzheimer's. He lost several toes on his left foot and suffered severe bruising after wandering onto the the 4 train tracks yesterday afternoon.
Woman Found Dead on Fire Escape
An elderly Bronx woman with Alzheimer's who had been missing for over 36 hours was finally found Sunday morning—dead on the fire escape two stories below her apartment. Lucia Rodriguez, 79, disappeared Friday night, and her son Miguel spent Saturday searching local hospitals and shelters, hoping to find her alive. Investigators are trying to figure out how Rodriguez got onto the fire escape and what the cause of death was; her corpse was spotted by a neighbor at 8 a.m. Sunday. "I don't know what I'm going to do now without her," 73-year-old Marcelino Ayala, her longtime live-in companion, tells the Daily News.
Club Claims Cops Abandoned Lost Granny, NYPD Denies It
On Saturday morning, 86-year-old Betty Zengel, who suffers from Alzheimer's, managed to disappear from her caretaker's watch on the Upper East Side—and somehow ended up outside a Chelsea nightclub at midnight. M2 Ultralounge's owner and head of security contacted the NYPD, whose officers escorted Zengel away. But later the club's owner and security noticed Zengel wandering in the rainy streets a few blocks away—and now the club claims the NYPD abandoned Zengel.
