Last night in St. Louis, the American League won its 13th MLB All Star game in a row, giving the AL team that makes it to the World Series home field advantage. Mariano Rivera closed the game (video); the Daily News reports this is his fourth All Star save, "moving him past Dennis Eckersley for the most in history," leading Rivera's teammate and fellow All Star Derek Jeter to say, "It's just another thing he can put on his Hall of Fame plaque, I guess."

Many Bon Jovi Fans Paying for Free Show
As the big Bon Jovi concert approaches tickets to the free show are going for as much as $1500/pair, The NY Post reports. The show is going down this Saturday on the Great Lawn in Central Park, and an additional lot of tickets will be released at the Javits Center this Friday (more details at MLB.com). Hardcore fans of Jon Bon who don't get their hands on the freebies will have to lay down some serious cash via online outlets like eBay and Craigslist.
An eBay search at midday yesterday found 267 listings for the sold-out concert, with prices ranging from 99 cents to $1,500 a pair from one especially audacious seller identified as "agttickets."So far 60,000 tickets are in the hands of fans (or scalpers). A search on Craigslist today shows a number of non-specific listings, mostly asking for "best offers." One scalper, who allegedly has 49 tickets to give away (even though there was a limit to 2 per person), claims they will only go to the die hard fans who meet him the day of the show (he'll be wearing a blue sweatshirt by the E 72nd Street entrance at 2 p.m.!).
Bon Jovi Brings Jersey to the Great Lawn
Yesterday came the announcement of a free concert that would be held on Central Park's Great Lawn this month featuring Mr. Jon Bon Jersey himself (now a Manhattanite). Today more details about the July 12th show and how to procure your golden tickets are unveiled via Bon Jovi's official website. Essentially, tickets will be made available at every major, and some minor baseball stadiums beginning July 2nd. Starting at 9 a.m. that day Bon Jovi fans will descend upon Yankee, Shea, KeySpan Park and the Staten Island Yankees stadiums...get more details here if you want to be one of them. And note that tickets will also will be available in Manhattan at DHL All-Star FanFest at the Jacob K. Javits Center on Friday, July 11th.
Mets And Yankees Look To Add Before Trade Deadline
The Yankees and Mets head into today’s trade deadline with similar objectives, upgrading their bullpens, but the Mets have already strengthened their team.

Baseball Honors Jackie Robinson
Sixty years today at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, Jackie Robinson made his debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers. When Robinson took the field to play first base against the Boston Braves, he became the first African-American player in modern era of Major League Baseball. Despite enduring constant harassment by fans and other players during his first year, Robinson won Rookie of the Year honors from the Sporting News and Major League Baseball. In what would become a Hall of Fame career, Robinson was a six-time All Star (1949-1954), the NL MVP in 1949, and made six World Series appearances with the Dodgers.
An All Star Last Stand for Yankee Stadium
For Yankee Stadium's last year - before a new park - Major League Baseball will be having the 2008 All Star Game in The House that Babe Built. MLB Commissioner Bud Selig said, "One of the biggest factors was George Steinbrenner. He has made wonderful contributions to this city and to the Yankees. Clearly one of the primary factors was to honor the city, the franchise and George Steinbrenner." Man, Selig makes it sound like Steinbrenner's going to die at some point! But we suppose MLB wants to honor Steinbrenner for driving up salaries so much. The Boss, who wasn't at the City Hall press conference, said he was touched.
Has Wright Stolen NYC's Baseball Hottie Title?
Okay, David Wright is only relatively new, but we do think that the Post's cover story from a few days ago about Wright becoming the city's most popular baseball figure had something to it. The Post decided David Wright was "Mr. Wright" based on this summer's jersey and t-shirt sales, but maybe it's time for Derek Jeter to hand over the pretty boy reins to Wright - DJ is 32 and Wright is a baby at 23! And aren't we tired of Derek Jeter's revolving door of girlfriends? Jeter's supposed current girlfriend is out gallivanting with Nick Lachey or getting protected by Perez Hilton, which means just one thing: Who will David Wright be seen at 230 Fifth Avenue with? And does this David Wright bobblehead seem accurate?
Elsewhere In The Ist-a-verse
After Wired ran a story documenting the GoogleCenter of the United States a bunch of ists jumped on the opportunity to figure out their own middle. Gothamist, Chicagoist, Bostonist and Seattlest all zoomed in on their creamy GoogleCenters. A crack cartography team is hard at work determining the GoogleCenter of the Ist-a-verse as you read this...
Minaya's Holiday Checklist - Is It Complete?
With plenty of time left before the holidays and the start of next year's baseball season, Omar Minaya has checked off his major tasks for the off-season. First baseman, done. Closer, signed. Catcher, officially finished yesterday when the Mets traded for Paul Lo Duca from the Marlins as Florida continued their fire sale. Minaya acquired Lo Duca from the Marlins for 21 year-old pitching prospect Gaby Hernandez and another minor league player to be named later. Lo Duca, who is 33 years-old, was born in Brooklyn, grew up as a Mets fan, and is excited to play for the team. He said yesterday that he expects the team to win as well, "I'll be disappointed if we don't win the NL East."
New York's All-Stars
It's Yankee against Yankee in the last stages of Major League Baseball All-Star voting! Derek Jeter and Hideki Matsui are vying for the final position on the American League's All Star team. Jeter and Matsui are up against Scott Podsednik of the Chicago White Sox, Torii Hunter from the Minnesota Twins, and Carl Crawford of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays; MLB.com says Jeter is leading Podsednik after one day of voting. You can vote right here as many times as you want, as long as you make sure to type in the correct validation key.
Vinsanity to Nets
In a question that Gothamist seems to be asking too often these days, did the Nets (in this case) give up too much to get Carter or is it just what they need to become competitive. A lineup with Carter, Jason Kidd and Richard Jefferson sounds very nice, but big names don't necessarily deliver championships (we're looking at you Lakers).
Franco Blows Chance for First
Now, the Mets are two games out of first place and tied for second place with the hated Atlanta Braves. The Mets take on the Florida Marlins this weekend in Miami before the break. The Phillies play the aforementioned Braves, with first place at steak. The best the Mets can hope for before the break is a tie for first with the Braves. After the All Star break, the Mets return home to play four against the Phillies. With games against the top teams in the NL East, there is a chance the Amazins could be in first very soon. Of course, there is also a chance they could be in fourth, a few games out of first.
Byron To The Rescue? Not So Fast...
Last week former Nets coach Byron Scott landed on his feet as the new head coach of the New Orleans Hornets. While doing some research on an upcoming story, Gothamist ran across this cloumn from the always knowledgeable John Hollinger on why Scott shouldn't expect his stay in the Big Easy to be very long.
The Rocket Plays on in Texas
"I'm maybe a little bit surprised that he's 7-0, but not much. I knew he'd be in good shape and be pumped up in his hometown. Changing leagues, the pitcher has the upper hand, especially the type of pitcher he is - who studies the hitters, who knows what he's doing. He's a freak of nature. People say a power pitcher can never adjust when he gets older, but he can pitch to spots because he's got great control. And who's to say he won't keep throwing 95, 96 miles per hour."Pitching like this will get him the start for the All Star game on July 13th, which happens to be in Houston. If that happens, it's possible that The Rocket's battery mate will be Mike Piazza. This Sunday, Clemens is actually scheduled to pitch against the Mets, which will be his second against the Mets since 2000. During that season, Clemens beaned Piazza in the Subway Series and threw a bat towards him in the World Series. In the first game after those incidents, Shawn Estes tried to hit Clemens, but ended up throwing the ball behind him. Few Mets remain on the team from the 2000 season, so the Clemens/Mets match-up probably won't be a big deal, but that doesn't mean we can't hype it, right?
