Since 1989, the Allman Brothers Band has played at the Beacon Theater 177 times; they're currently in the midst of what's become an annual tradition: a springtime, multi-night residency at the Beacon Theater. This year's run at the newly-renovated Beacon is fifteen nights long and coincides with the band's 40th anniversary. As always, surprise guests are planned for almost every night of the run, and this year the list is heavily rumored to include Eric Clapton and B.B. King.

The good folks at Farm Aid have just updated us with more details about their first show in New York City, announced in June and taking place September 9th. They also have a ton of info on food and farming in New York, which you can check out here.

With all this talk about venues closing, opening, renaming and branding themselves...it's easy for the little venues that aren't so publicized to get lost in the shuffle. Perhaps that's good, because once you find a nice small (no drink minimum) jazz club, you don't want everyone to know about it. However, you want it to stay in business, too. The Cablevision Dolans are planning to sink their claws into another Manhattan space: The Beacon Theatre. A long-term lease has been negotiated between the theater's owner and MSG Entertainment - one that has MSG paying much more than the current tenant, which may mean the Beacon's ticket prices would go up even more.

Time to start the new year off right, by seeing live music and not being left out on the cold cold sidewalk listening to your favorite songs echoing down the snow-filled street. This month there are a lot of hyped up bands coming our way. We are mainly talking about the Arcade Fire, if you don't have tickets we don't know what to tell you. If you're good at haikus you could try this contest. We'll also be having some ticket give-a-ways for some shows this month, and maybe MAYBE there will be an Arcade Fire one. But in the meantime, here are some tickets on sale that you can still buy:

Gothamist remembers the day well. We were rolling out of bed, late for a meeting and still longing for more sleep. We flipped on the Weather Channel to help us decide what grade of heavy jacket we were going to need for the morning’s blustery walk to work. The clock struck 8 after, and we focused our attention on the “accurate and dependable” local forecast greeting us with a pleasant familiarity. But as the forecast began, we lost all focus. What was this??? Is this… Phish… on the Weather Channel? Surely not. They would never play this… Indeed, they did. The Weather Channel, long known for its dreamy, mind numbing elevator music landscaped local forecasts, had made a noticeable change. That change was Steve Hurst.
