While we waited for our food we were curious as to whether the culinary aspect of this restaurant would live up to the mood that had been set, and we're happy to report that while Pequeña wasn't the best Mexican food we had ever experienced, it was respectable-to-good across the board. On two visits we sampled guacamole and chips, fish and chicken tacos, black beans and rice. The flavors were clear, the food well presented and tasty, and the service was attentive.

So the next time Gothamist is in the neighborhood to see a film at BAM, we'll definitely keep this place in mind.

Pequeña, 86 South Portland Ave. (at Lafayette), Fort Greene, (718) 643-0000

Imagine a place where you could choose amongst authentic Mexican, Honduran, Colombian, Guatemalan, Dominican, and Salvadoran food. Still on offer were butter crabs, chicken with peanut sauce, beef with coconut milk sauce, hot dogs, hamburgers, and a soupy red dessert. Unfortunately, the food and beer lines were confusing and tremendously long, making Gothamist newly appreciative of your more run-of-the-mill street fair in which you can grab and go.

When searching for gourmet and specialty foods, New Yorkers have lots of options: Dean and Deluca, Gourmet Garage, Garden of Eden, Zabar’s, etc.  But New Yorkers in the know make the trek to Atlantic Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn to partake in the vast selection and unbelievably low prices of Sahadi Importing Company
