The Yankees are in the playoffs, and the Jets and Giants seasons are well underway, so of course this is a perfect time to talk about the laughable losers of NY sports franchises, the Knicks! New star forward Amare Stoudemire is one of the five cover stars of the latest ESPN magazine "Body Issue." Since we are certainly no experts, we'll leave it to you as how this compares with the Jets newest wide receiver, Santonio Holmes.
Amare Stoudemire Strips Down For ESPN "Body Issue"
Making The Call: He Was Part Of The Answer
They are a lot of issues that Allen Iverson brings to the table. He sulked his way out of Memphis and he has never been a great distributor of the basketball. But, he is still a great scorer and a great defender and for a team lacking both of those attributes, the Knicks were foolish not to sign him.
UPDATE: Knicks NOT Looking For The Answer In Iverson
When we previously noted on the Knicks burgeoning interest in signing free agent guard Allen Iverson, it seemed as though it was a long shot to happen. But new reports have come out in the last two days that are making us question everything.
Allen Iverson Probably Not Coming To Knicks
Since 10-time All-Star guard and former Philadelphia 76er Allen Iverson was released from his one year contract with the Memphis Grizzlies earlier this week (he only played in three games with them, off the bench, this season), all the talk has revolved around whether or not the dismal 1-9 Knicks might sign him to a short term contract. The Knicks GM Donnie Walsh had flirted with signing "The Answer" briefly last summer, and cautiously said on Monday that they'd "look into it."
Last Night's Action: Knicks Lead Start to Finish
Twiddling Their Thumbs
As some teams played to lose Tuesday, the Nets hardly played to win, though the game remained devoid of some star power. The Nets' Jason Kidd and Richard Jefferson joined Sixers stars Allen Iverson and Chris Webber on the bench. Well, at least Kidd and Jefferson showed up; Webber and Iverson did not get to the game on time. Vince Carter also set the single-season mark for Nets scoring.
Fair and Square
A day after helping the Bulls stay in the Eastern Conference playoff race, the Nets did the same with the 76ers. Philadelphia crushed New Jersey 116-96 on Wednesday. Lawrence Frank and company must not have wanted to give an unfair advantage to either squad. Allen Iverson dropped forty on the Nets, who have now gone 1-3 since having their 14-game winning streak snapped. After playing so well for over a month, the Nets have taken their foot off the gas pedal. Their defense the past two nights has been non-existent; they allowed Philadelphia to shoot 50 percent from the floor for the game just a day after getting lit up by the Bulls.
Knicks Preview
The Knicks will definitely have a new look this season, but the question is will the results be different from last season? Eddy Curry is the first real center the Knicks have had since Patrick Ewing left, but we can only hope that the Knicks’ cardiologists are right in letting him play. Antonio Davis will provide toughness up front, but at age 37, how many minutes a night can he contribute? Channing Frye, Nate Robinson and David Lee will bring youthful energy, but youth also means that they will make rookie mistakes.
No 'Answer' for the Knicks Woes
The art of the heartbreaking defeat is reaching new heights this year in New York. And no, I'm not talking about the Yankees. Allen Iverson capped a stellar 38-point night by dishing the winning assist in a 106-105 win for the 76ers against the Knicks on Monday night. Marc Jackson added 22 for Philly, who now have a share of the Atlantic Division lead.
Marbury to Gothamist Sports, "STFU!"
Team USA roared into the semifinals of the Olympics today with a sound 102 - 95 victory over previously undefeated Spain. Team USA found their stroke from long range and nailed 12 of 22 attempts from three point land. For those counting at home, that's 55 percent.
Team USA Downs The Aussies
Look out world, Team USA might finally be "getting it". Team USA fought off an early 10 point deficit to take down Australia 89 - 79 yesterday in Men's Olympic basketball action. The vitcory pushed the American's record to 2 - 1 in round robin play. The US got big games from Allen Iverson (16 points in 23 minutes)and Tim Duncan and actually played some team defense for what seems like the first time in Athens. Duncan notched game highs with 18 points and 11 rebounds. He shot 7 of 11 from the floor and 4 of 6 from the charity stripe.
Go For The Gold?
Apparently Carmelo Anthony spoke too soon. The US Men's Olympic Basketball team was trounced earlier today by "European powerhouse" Italy. Just a week after Anthony, the youngest member of Team USA declared "We're guaranteeing a gold medal. We're bringing it back," the US suffered their worst exhibition loss since the NBA started sending players to the Olympics in 1992.
Team USA Already In Turmoil
More and more the USA Basketball committee that is selecting the 12 players for this summer’s Olympic basketball squad are hearing "I’m out", especially since the recent bombings in Athens. All this makes Gothamist wonder, who's in? Players that have turned down bids to play for Team USA include Seattle’s Ray Allen (fiancé giving birth this summer), Jersey’s Jason Kidd (nagging injuries), Toronto’s Vince Carter (getting married this summer), Minnesoata’s Kevin Garnett (fatigue from prolonged playoff run), and a trio of Lakers which include Karl Malone (needs time to recover from injury filled season), Kobe Bryant (pesky pending rape trial) and Shaquile O’Neal (doesn’t really want to go). Although he has not declined his invite yet, sources say Indiana’s Jermaine O’Neal is considering pulling out because of safety concerns in Athens.
