NL Can't Blame Loss on Reyes, but Maybe Wagner?

NL Can't Blame Loss on Reyes, but Maybe Wagner?

Jose Reyes did all he could for the National League in Tuesday's All-Star Game in San Francisco, but his team was still undone by the American League's best. Reyes played eight innings, had three hits and a run scored, but that wasn't enough. Perhaps his best performance came when he pulled back his fist from Carlos Beltran and David Wright during the pregame introductions. more ›

Last Night's Action: Rivera Returns

Last Night's Action: Rivera Returns

-Yankees 4 Tampa Bay 1: While New York spent most of September marching toward another division championship, there was one thought in the back of their minds. When will Mariano come back? Rivera had been sidelined since the end of August with a forearm strain and everyone knows that he is truly the indispensable Yankee come October. While we won’t know for sure until tomorrow, his return seems on track. Rivera struck out the side with a broken-bat single and a hit batter wedged in between. more ›

Bannister Gets First Win

Bannister Gets First Win

Last week, in his first career start, Brian Bannister saw his effort go to waste as the Mets bullpen blew his win against the Washington Nationals at Shea Stadium. Yesterday afternoon, Bannister was in cruise control against the Nationals as the Mets spoiled the Nationals home opener, 7-1. Bannister pitched seven impressive innings and allowed only three hits - one of which was Alfonso Soriano's solo home run in the 7th. The most impressive aspect of the rookie's performance was that he faced the Nationals less than a week ago. more ›

A Night of Firsts

A Night of Firsts

In the first inning of last night's game against the Nationals, the Mets got a few things out of the way. Brian Bannister, making his first major league start, picked up his first career strikeout against Jose Vidro. He would not, however, get his first win as Billy Wagner had his first blown save of the season. It was also the first time Gothamist has watched a game on SportsNet New York - SNY and DirecTV finally reached an agreement on Tuesday. As an aside, it would have been our first game at Shea, but our lousy friends were frightened by "gross" weather. more ›

Hitting, Pitching, a Little Luck

Hitting, Pitching, a Little Luck

Opening day is a good day for things to roll your way. In yesterday's 3-2 victory over the Washington Nationals, the Mets had great day with help from some new members and a lucky break. Tom Glavine started the season off on a good note, working six solid innings allowing six hits and one run. Xavier Nady, who should have Xavier McDaniel's old nickname, and Paul Lo Duca both had notable days at the plate, with Nady going 4-4 with two doubles while Lo Duca was 2-4 with a double. David Wright's home run in the 6th inning would prove to be the winning run and elicited insanely premature chants of MVP from the crowd. more ›

Mets Avoid Sweep

Mets Avoid Sweep

There must have been something in the air for the Mets to win the way they did. Ramon Castro hit his 3rd home run of the season and Marlon Anderson hit two homers for the first time in his career to help the Mets explode offensively. In the first two games of the series, the Mets only scored 6 runs while Castro and Anderson had 5 RBI all by themselves last night. Anderson was starting in the place of Mike Cameron who was dismal in Tuesday's loss. Carlos Zambrano improved his record to 5-9 in 7 innings of work. more ›

The Taxman Cometh

The Taxman Cometh

The game wasn’t all good news for the Yankees. Both Ruben Sierra and Bernie Williams had to leave with injuries and while Williams’ injury appears to be minor, Sierra could be out for an indefinite period of time. The Yankees have already sent Tanyon Sturtze to the disabled list this week and will hope to avoid having to sending another player. more ›

Clemens and Piazza to Meet at Midsummer Classic?

Clemens and Piazza to Meet at Midsummer Classic?

Mets' pitcher Tom Glavine, who could be an All-Star this season as well, doesn't think the potential situation will be that big an issue, "Usually, you sit there and spend 20 minutes reviewing the hitters. In the All-Star Game, you spend 30 seconds to a minute. They ask: 'What signs do you want to use? What pitch do you want to throw? Let's go have fun.'" McKeon agrees, saying, "They're professionals, and they'll perform. I don't think personalities will enter into it." more ›

Will the Farm Do the "Evil Empire" In?

Will the Farm Do the "Evil Empire" In?

While Gothamist isn't saying that all these deals were busts, it certainly is troubling. What are the Yankees to do this year when they need that big trade to push them into the playoffs? Certainly, they can't trade away their prospects because they have none. We're sure that Brian Cashman and George Steinbrenner will think of something before the July 31st trading deadline because they really need a consistent 5th starter. Right now, their hopes pin on their current crop of prospects and the June 7th draft where the Yankees hope to increase their system wide depth. more ›

All is Well For Soriano

All is Well For Soriano

Soriano still follows the Yankees and talks with his old friends, Derek Jeter and Jose Contraras. He also revealed that he was married last July, but kept it private fearing the New York media. Despite the fact that Soriano has played well in Texas, a Rangers official told The Times that he isn't untouchable. One team rumored to have hopes of acquiring Soriano is the Mets, which would mean Soriano could have some rice and beans again. more ›
