Move over, Soup Nazi Ali "Al" Yeganeh, there's a new perfectionist who doles out stern ministrations to guests, Masa Takayama. Takayama, who has just opened the city's most expensive sushi restaurant, Masa, and smaller bar, Bar Masa, at the Time Warner Center, is profiled by Alex Witchel and it seems Takayama's "my way or the highway" approach to food is just what sniveling foodies in New York need. Takayama describes some of the early interest in Masa:

Buy Gish Jen's hilarious book, Mona in the Promised Land, where main character Mona Chang converts to Judaism and is known as "Changowitz." More about the Jewish community in China.

Our favorite local BBQ mastermind, Adam Perry Lang of Daisy May's, is profiled today in the Times Dining section. Alex Witchel looks at his work not only at Daisy May's but also at Robert's Steakhouse, the delicious and well-received steak joint at the Penthouse Executive Club (read: club where executives are entertained by exotic dancers), perhaps the first meat market where you can eat meat, plus his culinary credentials gathered from NY (Daniel Boulud, Les Halles, Chaneterelle), Paris (Guy Savoy), and Santa Fe (for a little BBQ). We wonder if Frank Rich demanded to accompany Witchel to Robert's Steakhouse - he was the "Butcher of Broadway," you know.

New York magazine gives its picks for good street eating (as well as best outdoor eating and outdoor bars) this summer. We want to check out the hot dog cart in Madison Square Park (which the Times' Alex Witchel did a feature on in the Dining section two weeks ago, basically a year+ after the initial excitement), but the idea of a pork bun from Chinatown's Sun Dou Dumpling Shop on Grand Street sounds just as good.

Susie as Susie; Photo - HBO To millions, she's the foul-mouthed, tough cookie Susie Greene on Curb Your Enthusiasm. But in real life, Susie Essman is only slightly less salty, as this Times Dining article by Alex Witchel reveals. It takes place in Aspen, during the HBO U.S. Comedy Festival. Susie sees a man in a mink, and says, "To me, there is nothing more repulsive than a man in a mink. A straight man, I'm talking about." Love to love you, Susie.

If the Lifetime Network is where movie and TV (okays, mostly TV) actresses of yesterday are put to pasture...I mean, do TV movies and specials, what can we expect of the upcoming Lifetime magazine. Former hot journalists will do stories about women scorned? Maybe if Alex Witcheland Sally Quinn really want to slum AND empower women, they can write to the magazine. Or Rosie O'Donnell can prove her journalistic chops again. The New York Times does its thing and simultaneously doubts and hedges its bets on the new venture. Lifetime does have its dogged and devoted fans: this site is titled I am a lifetime television for women movie junkie. Better yet, check out the Lifetime Movie Title Generator.
