Iconic Einstein Image Auctioned to NY Man

You know that iconic photo of Albert Einstein sticking his tongue out? It just sold at auction for $74,324, and now belongs to a man in Great Neck, NY. Newsday reports that the expression was captured in 1951, and Einstein himself gave one copy (of the nine he requested) to American broadcast journalist Howard K. Smith with the inscription: "This gesture you will like, because it is aimed at all of humanity." It's the only time he ever came close to explaining his action in the photograph, and the new owner notes: "In the middle of a Communist witch hunt, here he is sticking his tongue out. I think he's telling us to buck authority." This is probably way more fun than owning those notes on relativity.

THEATER: You’ve got just three more weekends to experience one of the wildest and most entertaining late-night theater extravaganzas to hit New York this century. The Curse of the Mystic Renaldo The defies description – what begins as a fake silent movie (ostensibly unearthed during the construction of 3 Legged Dog’s sleek new theater center) quickly dashes off in countless delirious directions at once: There’s live rock, hilarious vaudevillian slapstick, both high and low art, free popcorn, free regular and light beer, side-splitting ribaldry and, above all, the virtuoso performance of Aldo Perez, the show’s charismatic creator. (Not to take anything away from his equally brilliant co-stars Jenny Lee Mitchell and Richard Ginocchio.) See it now so you’ll have time to catch it again before it closes. - John Del Signore

READING: Albert Einstein had a pretty crazy life, from his rebellious childhood to marrying his first cousin (happy couple pictured at right). Walter Isaacson's biography of the man (Einstein: His Life and Universe) will shed light on things you probably don't even want to know. Come meet the man behind the equation (well, at least the man behind the book about the man behind the equation).

Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result. That means there are on average at least 18.824 insane people who keep going to Knicks games expecting to see a 19-51 team win. Add to that the fact that TV ratings are actually up 8% and it might be time to get another lock for your door.

There is a nice doubles theme in today's Weddings and Celebrations. Couples who went to school together, couples who teach at school together, couples who work at AOL together, couples whose Filipino parents have the same medical professions, couples with the same number of divorces, even couples with the same number of kids!

The Crooners, Old-Timey Musicians

As the Democrats try to regroup and figure out if there is anyone who can beat Mayor Moneybags, it turns out that Howard Dean also considered running for Mayor, because if there's one thing New Yorkers like, it's a Mayor who will yell and get red in the face. The Politicker says Dean had spoken to associates about the possibility and notes Dean's NYC upbringing ("Park Avenue, Browning, off to Andover and Yale, then back to Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx"). If Howard Dean ran, that would have been some Democratic debate. And if the Reverend Al Sharpton ran too, it would bring down the house. Gothamist would assume Dean would be pro-graffiti, as he did give a speech during his presidential run in front of graffiti in Bryant Park.

Every so often, news will pop up about various geniuses being autistic, based on books and essays about their behavior. Cambridge professor Simon Baron Cohenbelieve that Albert Einstein and Sir Issac Newton had Asperger's syndrome, a mild form of autism, which seems to explain their eccentricities and problems with socializing. There have been thoughts that Bill Gates is autistic, inspired by his rocking in chairs, his odd tics.
