A classic winter weather situation is brewing for this weekend. This time of year the Arctic air masses that come out of Canada are cold and dry, thus relatively dense. The dense air hugs the ground, making the high pressure system shallow, which disconnects it from the steering winds of the jet stream. When that happens the Arctic air struggles to get over the Appalachians. Instead it sinks southward across the Great Plains and into the Gulf of Mexico. On occasion the cold air will cross the Gulf, pass through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (you do remember it's strategic importance to the Gadsden Purchase, right?) and reach the Pacific. As the cold air funnels through the gap in the Sierra Madre it creates a violent breeze snickeringly known to juvenile meteorologists as a tehuantepecer.

There's enough weather on tap this week for us to hold on to our hats, both literally and figuratively. An Alberta Clipper will pass south of the city today, transforming into a coastal storm overnight before returning tomorrow. Arctic air will quickly follow the coastal storm and another Alberta Clipper is expected to zip through the area on Thursday.

A chilly and sunny morning will give way to clouds and snow this evening. As the clouds move in today's high should creep up to the freezing mark. Snow will likely start late this evening as an Alberta Clipper moves over the eastern Great Lakes. Only 1-2 inches of snow are expected and it wouldn't surprise Gothamist if the southern and eastern reaches of the city received only a dusting. If you're in the mood for serious snow head upstate where portions of Ulster and Dutchess Counties should get 6-10 inches.

Through yesterday, this month was on pace to be the tenth warmest February recorded in Central Park. Cooler conditions today, and especially tomorrow, will put a kibosh on any top ten dreams the month may have had. This morning's brisk winds are in advance of an approaching Alberta Clipper that will pass through the area this evening. As the clipper gets closer skies will cloud up and there's an outside chance of a few flurries. The system is pretty weak and clouds will dissipate later in the evening. With any luck the sky will clear enough to make viewing tonight's lunar eclipse possible. More on the eclipse later!

Lots of classic textbook weather action should occur today and tonight. An Alberta Clipper, currently centered over Toledo, is zipping southeastward and will be off the Mid-Atlantic coast by tonight. We won't be much affected by the Clipper itself, as it will travel a fair distance south of the city, but there's a good chance we will get caught up with what happens next. What should happen next is what guys in plaid oxford shirts,...

The dominant weather maker today is a high pressure system that covers much of the eastern half of the country. The big air mass is cool and dry. A clue as to how cool can be found in the dew point temperature. As the center of the high has moved east our dew point, the temperature to which the air must cool for dew to form, has dropped to 25 degrees. Below freezing that's a...

Today's weather is your reward for putting up with a week of less-than-pleasant conditions. Sunny skies will let temperatures rise to 50 degrees this afternoon for the first time since mid-January. The warm weather respite will be brief, leave work early if you can, as another Alberta Clipper passes through town tomorrow.

Recently, everytime Gothamist says it is going to rain it hasn't rained. So it is with great trepidation that we say it is going to rain tonight. The rain has already made it to Sandy Hook, so maybe we'll get this one right. A classic nor'easter is coming up the coast this week. The rain should start soon and will be heavy overnight. You may hear some thunder. It is going to take a while for the cold air to arrive, so we won't see any snow in the city. When the cold air gets here tomorrow night it will do so on the back of a fierce wind. Get out the wind chill charts!

The Weather Service's forecast discussion is in rare form today, and that's a good thing. Usually the discussions are dry, technical dissections of the reasoning behind the forecast. The 4:00 a.m. discussion starts with "RATHER DREARY DAY ON TAP FOR THE TRI-STATE REGION" to describe the warm front to our south that is bringing us the clouds and rain. Not too much rain as "OVER OUR NECK OF THE WOODS...DRIER AIR IN THE MID LEVELS HAS WORKED IN", meaning the precipitation will mainly be drizzle. However, today the "DAYSHIFT SHOULD WATCH TRENDS TO SEE HOW THINGS PROGRESS WITH THIS AREA OF SHOWERS AND TSTMS". The rain should diminish through the day tomorrow and it should be in the 50s.
