Mark Green Pinky Swears He's Done Losing Elections

After losing big to Bill deBlasio in last week's public advocate runoff election, Mark Green is saying that he is out of politics for good...again. Green says his defeat came down to two factors: "Turnout; the array of forces. Period." Always the gracious loser, he added, "I was surprised and disappointed that the other side's operation overwhelmed my record and optimism." Green says he will go back to writing and his work at Air America. His daughter told him now he can go back to what he's good at—with there now being one thing we can all safely rule out that is not.

Janeane Garofalo, Comedian

Janeane Garofalo was one of the definitive comedians of the '90s. Her mix of deadpan sarcasm with heartfelt (and often angry) earnestness would set the bar for what has become an ever growing "alternative" comedy scene throughout this decade. She still is very much a part of that scene, performing around town regularly at places like UCB and Union Hall with local staples such as Eugene Mirman and Todd Barry. Tomorrow she'll be co-hosting a stand-up show with Best Week Ever's Paul F. Tompkins at the new 92YTribeca in a showcase that features an all-star lineup that includes both David Cross and Kristen Schaal amongst others.

Talking Radio reported that Air American Radio host and liberal Randi Rhodes was mugged on Sunday night on 39th Street and Park Avenue while walking her dog. Soon after, fellow AAR host Jon Elliott stated that Rhodes was beaten up pretty badly, lost teeth and insinuated that the attack was part of "the right wing hate machine." And soon after that an AAR blogger, Nancy Scola, posted: "Air America host Randi Rhodes experienced an unfortunate incident hindering her from hosting her show. The reports of a presumed hate crime are unfounded. Ms. Rhodes looks forward to being back on the air on Thursday."

Marc Maron's record 38 Conan appearances are a testament to his ability to be consistently funny, intelligent, and engaging. It's this ability that's landed him two Comedy Central Specials, multiple programs on Air America, and appearances in clubs nationwide, including Comix on October 12th and 13th. And while credits and portions of Maron's own quips may hint at his talent, the best way to get a taste of Maron is to visit MarcMaron.com, where you can watch any of his 38 Conan appearances and several uncut and uncensored full-length stand up performances.

READING: Elizabeth Edwards, wife of Presidential candidate John Edwards, will have the spotlight on her for the night as she reads from her memoir, Saving Graces. The tale of her teenage son's death and her current battle with cancer may have you grabbing for a box of tissues (and voting for her hubby?).

characters. Franken had developed a very successful career making people laugh, but through the movie we see how his convictions wouldn't allow him to stay quiet about the direction he saw the country heading. He almost makes punditry look like a noble calling. Also good for a liberal chuckle is the footage of Franken going head to head with a very icy Ann Coulter. The fact that she doesn't lean over and pop him one in the nose shows remarkable restraint on her part. Rent this documentary and you'll walk away hoping that Franken's bid for a Senate seat turns out much more successfully than his career in talk radio.

The Brooklyn Peace Fair is happening all weekend, starting this afternoon. The fair is NYC's "largest annual grassroots event dedicated to the promotion of peace, social justice, and education on sustainable development". Dear lord, it's only mid-September but already the amount of new releases flooding theaters is getting a bit overwhelming.

Air America's The Majority Report with Janeane Garofalo and Sam Seder will broadcast live from The Tank, which it also did during the Republican National Convention. This time the broadcast includes a live studio audience and guest Tim Robbins.

The program is hosted by Katherine Lanpher, who also co-hosts "The Al Franken Show" on Air America. In the continuing series she will entertain authors, singer-songwriters and artists in an evening of conversation and performance.

Kerryites, still wracking your brain for a reason why George W. won. Well, Air America host, Laura Flanders has a theory which she uncovers in her latest book Bushwomen: How They Won the White House for Their Man.

Did you guys know winter was still here? Yeah, anyway, it'll be giving us some more snow this weekend which means that staying home and drinking hot chocolate (or red wine) and watching movies will likely be a top choice for most. But for the adventurous we offer the following choices, along with a spontaneous snowball fight:

Our friends at Broadway's The Good Body, the Eve Ensler one-woman show, have alerted us to an enticing series of talkbacks that started Wednesday night. An interesting and eclectic mix of talking heads, feminists, movie stars, and so forth have been booked to give their takes on the show. Gothamist really dug this show and wants to go back and hear Gloria Steinem's take on this piece on feminine body image and the challenge of confronting society's expectations, as well as our own. We're also curious to hear Isabella Rossellini's take on the show and the ideas it explores, since she is one of the 'characters' portrayed by Ensler in the show, and in the show has a lot to say on the subject at hand. Here's the list of talkbacks booked so far: (with more dates to be added):

So we've seen the first Presidential debate, and now last night the Vice Presidential debate...still want more? This Friday the second Presidential debate goes down and why not enjoy the banter with friends and cocktails. You can even play that drinking game a reader sugggested (found in the above link). Be warned however: Gothamist thinks that if you take a swig every time Bush pauses, doesn't know what a word means, or stumbles over his very own "original thoughts" or catch phrases...you may not know which party you support by the end of the night. But hey, it's on Friday, you'll have all weekend to nurse the political hangover.

Time Out New York and Air America Radio are sponsoring Take a Republican to Lunch Week from August 30th through September 2nd. The idea is that you should invite a Republican to lunch, read up on important issues, enjoy a lively political debate and a ten percent discount at lunch, then report your experience back to Air America. The sponsors of the event even provide a list of sites to research the political issues. So reach out and make friends with "these exotic and (around here, at least) elusive creatures," and visit the event's website to find a list of participating restaurants and more details.

And the week in full.

In NY, the network airs on WLIB 1190AM (LA: KBLA 180AM; Chicago: WNTD 950AM). The Washington Post's Howard Kurtz looked at Air America a few weeks ago. Jeff Jarvis has been listening and says, "." Well, the station probably doesn't want to be confused with Air America, the airplane pilot "comedy" with Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr.
