Damnit Janet! Susan Sarandon is getting some heat for referring to the current pope as a Nazi (and then repeating it) in an offhand remark while talking about her movie 1995 Dead Man Walking on Saturday in the Hamptons. Seems that back then Sarandon sent a copy of the book the movie was based on to the pope. "The last one," she clarified, "not this Nazi one we have now." When her interviewer, Bob Balaban, gently tut-tutted she didn't back down and just repeated the remark. And now of course the Catholic League is furious!

Roger Waters Tells Abe Foxman to Stop Throwing Rocks
Roger Waters has responded to criticism from Abe Foxman at the Anti-Defamation League, which issued a statement earlier this week claiming that a video segment in Waters's new live tour of The Wall is anti-Semitic. Amateur footage from a recent performance shows the Star of David being dropped from a B52 like bombs, along with other religious icons and corporate logos. On Facebook, Waters writes:
ADL Slams Roger Waters For Star of David Bombs In "Wall"
Here's a list of symbols seen dropping like bombs from a plane in a video projection during Roger Water's The Wall concert: Crosses, Muslim crescents, Shell logos, dollar signs, Hammer & Sickles, Mercedes Benz logos, and the Star of David. And here's the number of angry press releases issued to protest the imagery: One. Care to guess who's outraged? Click through for the video and the answer, which may not shock you (especially since we put it in the headline of this post).
Fareed Zakaria: ADL's Mosque Opposition Is "Bizarre"
Newsweek columnist (and Newsweek International editor) and CNN host Fareed Zakaria announced he would return a prize from the Anti-Defamation League because he was upset by the group's decision to oppose the mosque proposed for Lower Manhattan. Zakaria said last night on his CNN show, "I have to say I was personally and deeply saddened by the ADL’s stand because five years ago, the organization honored me with its Hubert Humphrey Award for First Amendment Freedoms. Given the position that they have taken on a core issue of religious freedom in America, I cannot in good conscience keep that award."
"Ground Zero" Mosque Fury at Fever Pitch as LPC Votes No
As you know, every two-bit political hack hankering for a taste of the limelight is wallowing in sanctimonious fauxtrage over the Islamic center planned for downtown Manhattan, commonly misidentified as the "Ground Zero Mosque." Today, as the audience shouted "Shame!" the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to deny landmark status to the building that will be torn down to build the 13-story community center, which is now called Park51 (the address is 45-51 Park Place). But one of the project's planners is trying to make peace with the opposition by promising to include a memorial for 9/11 victims. That ought to defuse everything.
Anti-Defamation League Opposes Mosque Near Ground Zero
The Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish organization whose programs "counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry," has finally weighed in on the controversy engulfing an Islamic group that wants to build a community center and mosque near the World Trade Center site. This should calm everybody down:
Ronan Tynan To Sing For Anti-Defamation League As Penance
Earlier this month, celebrated Irish tenor Ronan Tynan lost his regular gig singing "God Bless America" at Yankee Stadium during the formerly forced seventh inning patriotism stretch. The Yankees cut him loose because he got caught making an anti-Semitic remark to a prospective apartment buyer in his building; when the broker told him not to worry because the buyers weren't Red Sox fans, Tynan replied, "I don’t care about that, as long as they are not Jewish." For good measure, he added that some Jewish women who'd seen the apartment were "scary."
