Community Activist Harry Wieder Killed By Taxi

Harry Wieder, an LGBT rights, transportation, and disabilities advocate, was run down and killed by a taxi last night in the LES. Weider, 57, described himself on his Facebook page as a "disabled, gay, Jewish, leftist, middle aged dwarf who ambulates with crutches." He was crossing Essex Street after leaving a Community Board 3 monthly meeting at P.S. 20 when he was struck by the cab. Many colleagues witnessed the accident and accompanied him to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. more ›

Percy Sutton, Politician, Power Broker, Activist, Dies At 89

Percy Sutton, described by the NY Times as "one of the nation’s most prominent black political and business leaders," died yesterday at age 89. Governor Paterson's spokeswoman confirmed Sutton's death, but did not know the cause. Paterson issued a statement saying, "Percy was fiercely loyal, compassionate and a truly kind soul. He will be missed but his legacy lives on through the next generations of African-Americans he inspired to pursue and fulfill their own dreams and ambitions." more ›

NYCLU Sues City, Says Staten Island BP Sent Cops to Bust Critic

Kerry Sullivan, a longtime Staten Island gadfly who's awaiting a liver transplant, claims that police arrested him outside his home in August as retaliation for his outspoken criticism of Borough President James P. Molinaro. Yesterday the NYCLU filed a federal lawsuit on Sullivan's behalf, naming the City of New York and the two police officers who arrested Sullivan as defendants, and claiming they violated Sullivan’s rights under the First, Fourth and Fourteenth amendments; the New York State Constitution; and New York common law. Those are a lot of violations! But what's really outrageous is what the cops allegedly told Sullivan during the arrest. more ›

GRL Founder James Powderly Back at Home

With James Powderly & Co. safe at home stateside, details about how he was detained are surfacing. Animal New York reports that "cops busted in Powderly's hotel room 'V for Vendetta style' while he was sleeping and carted him away to the Chong Wen Detention House." The website also notes that while Powderly never even got to L.A.S.E.R. the words "Free Tibet" over there, he managed to get the word out nonetheless--the activists were greeted by a slew of reporters at the airport yesterday. The crew flew in to LAX, five days ahead of time--likely due to U.S. officials pressuring Beijing to release them. more ›

At approximately 11:57 a.m. a news alert came in saying there was a large crowd gathered at 620 8th Avenue and West 40th Street. "LEVEL 1 CALLED FOR CROWD CONTROL, AND A POSSIBLE PERSON ATTEMPTING TO JUMP DOWN FROM A BLDG." A reader wrote in minutes later saying, "Someone is climbing the exterior of the NY Times building." more ›
