In September, the bar Apothéke opened in an unmarked space on Doyers Street, a tiny alley in Chinatown that sort of plays hangnail to Worth Street's cuticle. Apothéke is one of those semi-private venues, a bar you can't get into; that it's close to a secret tunnel makes it all the more baroque. You half expect to find a minotaur preening in the bathroom mirror with a bottle of Binaca and a comb. The name Apothéke refers to the pharmaceutical-themed nature of its mixed drink menu. The idea is that the place raises the bar for bars, and that head chef (or lead apothéker, as it were) Albert Trummer is half-and-half supertaster and chef, and one part sage. His specially concocted, spiced-tinctures-botanical-elixirs might cure your woes, homesick blues, lovelorn heart, or gnostic turpitude, if you're into that kind of thing.

Scanning Delicious this morning, we spotted this image of a pothole shaped like an Absolut Vodka bottle, posted by Otilius. It's too bad the company recently retired its iconic advertising campaign, because this pothole could make a good ad. Well, it had to happen: Sex and the City boytoy Jason Lewis is suing Absolut Vodka for using the fake "Absolut Hunk" ad, created for an episode of SATC, as a real ad. According to AdAge, Lewis has "avoided assignments relating to alcohol, tobacco and guns...and refused work requiring nudity so that he would be taken seriously by the fashion and entertainment industries." Plus, "the "Absolut Hunk" work was not to be used outside of the series without Mr. Lewis' consent and that it was not to be available in magazines or where young children had access"; Absolut had issued a press release and put the image on the website, as well as how to make an Absolut Hunk cocktail, the day after the show aired. Yes, that would be disturbing for a little kid to see the picture - he or she would runny to Mommy or Daddy and say, "Do boys grow Absolut bottles when they get bigger?"

Ad Age coos over what they think is the most successful product placement this summer: Absolut Vodka's critical role in a Sex and the City plot line between Kim Cattrall and Jason Lewis. No money changed hands, which doesn't surprise Gothamist - you cannot buy publicity like this. Patrick O'Neill, creative director of TBWA/Chiat Day, created the ad, and was "inspired" by seminal pin-up posters of "Farrah Fawcett in a swimsuit and Burt Reynolds on a shaggy rug." Also, TBWA "." Love handles! Jason Lewis has love handles? They must be imaginary ones.
