Buzz Bissinger On Friday Night Lights, His New Book Father's Day, And Twitter
After Dramatic Late Strike, Rangers Sneak Past Capitals in OT
Henrik Lundqvist, on the bench to give the trailing Rangers an extra skater, said he was already thinking about the next game. But he started planning ahead 6.6 seconds too early. Brad Richards scored a game-tying goal in regulation's dying moments, and Marc Staal scored in overtime to give the Rangers a 3-2 win over the Capitals. The Rangers now lead the series three games to two. They can advance to the Eastern Conference finals if they win on Wednesday.
Buzz Bissinger: College Football Is An Exploitive Waste of Money And Must Be Banned
So you're in New York [tomorrow] for a debate about banning college football. Do you feel that all of college football should be banned or is it just the BCS? I think all of college football should be banned. I have a feeling these programs don't make any money and no one is really, on any level, presenting a good argument to me as to why they should exist in an academic setting.
[Update] Knicks/Heat Game 4: KNICKS WIN!
[Updates Below] We've been there for every minute of this agonizing playoff series between the Knicks and Miami Heat—watched every Carmelo Anthony shot attempt, read about every fire extinguisher incident, listened to every absurdly confidant quote. And now we're exactly where we were last season, with a Game 4 elimination match at MSG. Amare Stoudemire is starting, bandaged hand and all—but will it make any difference? We'll be here to update the post through every high and low this afternoon.
Washington Takes Game 4
The Rangers will return to MSG Monday with their series with Washington tied 2-2 thanks to a couple of mistakes and an interesting penalty call.
Jeremy Lin Likely Out For Game 4, But At Least He Has A Fruit Roll-Ups Jersey
Last night was perhaps the cruelest playoff loss yet for the Knicks in this series against the Miami Heat: while game 1 was a blowout and game 2 was just glass-smashing, the Heat actually played really badly for a large amount of Thursday night at the Garden. LeBron James seemed to be doing everything he could in the first three quarters to give this one to the Knicks, yet they couldn't quite keep their first half momentum going, resulting in a thoroughly depressing 87-70 loss. Between their looming sweep and his lingering injuries, it's practically a certainty that Jeremy Lin won't risk more injury by playing in Game 4 on Sunday. But there is something he can do for the team: invite them over to binge eat his jersey made entirely of fruit-roll ups.
Knicks and Devils Head in Opposite Directions
Down two games to none in their playoff series and without Amar'e Stoudemire, the Knicks needed a better performance at home in Game 3 against the Miami Heat. For three quarters, they put forth a better effort than the first two games (not saying much), but they fell apart in the fourth quarter of an 87-70 loss. The Knicks led by four at the half but scored only 30 points after intermission. Despite the belief he might benefit from Stoudemire's absence, Carmelo Anthony laid an egg. He shot 7-of-23 for 22 points, and had almost as many turnovers (five) as made baskets. The Knicks were outscored by 25 points with him on the floor. The Knicks have now lost an NBA-record 13 straight playoff games. They'll play for their season Sunday.
Knicks Still Optimistic For Game 3 Against Heat...Despite Everything
In the wake of two bad losses to the Miami Heat and Fire Extinguishergate, the Knicks are not exactly in great shape heading into Game 3 at the Garden tonight. But even with no Iman Shumpert, Amare Stoudemire and Jeremy Lin, the team is still hopeful they can end their playoff win drought...somehow: “It’s a big challenge but we’ve been facing challenges all year,’’ Carmelo Anthony said after yesterday’s practice. “We all got to do it. I’m not going to do it myself. We just got to believe we can go out there and win the game. “They did what they had to do on their court. Now it’s our turn.”
Rangers Need Three Overtimes To Outlast Capitals
Marian Gaborik, who scored 41 goals in the regular season, had one goal in nine playoff contests entering Wednesday's Game 3 against the Capitals. The Rangers had lost seven straight playoff overtime games. Both droughts ended 14 minutes, 41 seconds into the third overtime, when Gaborik finally beat Braden Holtby between the Washington goalie's legs. Henrik Lundqvist stood tall and made 45 saves to end his overtime losing streak. The Rangers lead the best-of-seven series two games to one, with Game 4 set for Saturday. The teams will welcome the extra day off.
Rangers See Series Tied at 1; Knicks Should Be So Lucky
With one foolish penalty, Brad Richards helped undo a two-goal comeback he helped start, and the Rangers fell to the Capitals, 3-2. The center scored in the final minute of the first period but took a bad holding penalty at the 12:29 mark. That set up the game-winner from Alex Ovechkin, who was a much bigger factor than he was in Game 1. The series is tied at one game apiece, with Game 3 coming Wednesday in Washington.
Knicks Hit New Low In Opening Playoff Game Against Heat
Well, that's one way to start a playoff series: the Knicks got utterly destroyed in game one of their playoff series against the Miami Heat yesterday afternoon. After a well-played first quarter, the game was never close again—the 100-67 final score doesn't even give you an idea of how pathetic it was. So all that confidence was definitely not justified. NY Times reporter Michael Powell has an idea of how they can win game two though: "Sign Ewing, page Oakley at car wash, ask Starks if he is still limber..."
Kreidermania! Rangers Take First Game Against Caps
Are you tired of Tebowmania? Were you late to Linsanity? Well then here's your chance to jump on the next big thing in New York City sports—Kreidermania. Chris Kreider is quickly establishing himself as a star in the NHL, just ask Washington. Saturday, Kreider broke a 1-1 tie with a beautiful goal. He jumped into the play, received a great pass from Derek Stepan and blistered a slapper past Braden Holtby. Just a minute and a half later, he dug the puck out of the corner and setup Brad Richards for the Rangers third goal as New York took the opening game of their series with Washington 3-1.
Rangers Face A Familiar Foe In Round 2
In two of the past three seasons, the Washington Capitals have ended the Rangers' season. In 2008-09, it took the Caps seven games to prevail over New York. Last spring, they dispatched with New York in five games. So, the Rangers will have some extra motivation heading into today's opener, but unlike the previous two series, they will also be favored in this one.
Are The Knicks Absurdly Confident Or Justifiably Confident They Can Beat Miami?
Why is Stoudemire in particular so confident in the team? He thinks they have more depth than Miami: depth. “Our bench has been phenomenal for us all season long," he told the Post. "We’re a much better defensive team than we were before. We have so many threats offensively to match their offensive threats. So it’s pretty much even as far as our startling lineup and I think our second unit is a little bit stronger.’’
Take A Peek At Leaked Pics Of New Brooklyn Nets Apparel
The Nets have had a busy week, playing their final game in New Jersey, unveiling the almost-complete Barclays Center, and teasing their new logo. Yesterday, our sources confirmed that was indeed the team's new logo—and today, there are leaked pics of some new Nets gear. Hmm, we see a whole lot of "Brooklyn" and not very much "Nets" there...
Rangers And Devils Advance To Second Round
You won't find their names in tonight's scoring summary and they each missed significant time in this series, but the Rangers wouldn't have prevailed over Ottawa without the contributions of Carl Hagelin and Chris Kreider. New York beat Ottawa 2-1 Thursday to survive Game 7.
Yup, This IS The New Brooklyn Nets Logo
During this morning's Barclays Center jobs press conference, everyone was whispering about the new logo, a photograph of which was circulating yesterday. Although Brooklyn BP Marty Markowitz wouldn't comment on it directly ("I don't know, we'll see"), our sources confirmed that it is indeed the logo. As for the team keeping the Nets name, Markowitz said he wasn't that concerned: "As long as the first part of the name is Brooklyn!"
2012 NFL Draft Starts Tonight: Jets Unlikely To Pick QB, But You Never Know
The only thing we know about tonight's NFL Draft is that Andrew Luck will be the first pick. Beyond that, things get really murky. Maybe the Jets will go for defense in Round 1, while the Giants focus on offense. We can probably assume the Jets won't take a QB, but you never know.
Rangers' Offense Wakes Up in Time to Force Game 7
An early one-goal deficit and a scoreless drought that stretched to the equivalent of more than two full games weren't enough to keep the Rangers from a Game 6 rally. With three straight second-period goals, including two on the power play, the Rangers won, 3-2, to force a decisive Game 7 on Thursday at Madison Square Garden.
Prospective Jets Cheerleaders Only In It For The Tim Tebow
The Jets held the first round of auditions yesterday to make their cheerleading squad, the 40-woman Jets Flight Crew. About 300 women showed up in sports bras and spandex—but the talk of the day was of everyone's favorite Jets backup quarterback/meme generator/Hoboken resident Tim Tebow. “I’m a Tebow fan all the way!” Alicia Green, who dropped to one knee and "Tebowed," told the Post. “Yeah, he’s hot, and isn’t he a virgin still? That’s hot!”
Rangers and Devils Now in 3-2 Holes
Despite 41 shots, four power plays and another impressive performance from Henrik Lundqvist, the Rangers fell, 2-0, to the Senators and now trail the best-of-seven playoff series, three games to two. After Jason Spezza scored at the 9:18 mark, the Rangers tried and failed to play catchup. They must win Game 6 in Ottawa on Monday night, or they'll see their dominant regular season go to waste.
Yanks Visit Boston to Celebrate Fenway's 100th Birthday
Their rivalry has plateaued in recent seasons, but the Yankees and Red Sox are renewing it now in Boston with today's opener of a three-game set. The game will mark the official 100th anniversary celebration of Fenway Park and will see the both teams play in throwback uniforms. It will also see a rivalry that while still exciting, has seen better days.
Knicks Playoff Tickets Pre-Sale Starts At Noon Today (For Some)
The Knicks have looked dominant in their last two victories—they're reminding us of the early-00s Philadelphia 76ers, with Carmelo Anthony taking on the Allen Iverson role. Barring any insane meltdowns over their last four games, the Knicks will definitely be in the playoffs, most likely the seventh seed in the East (though ESPN points out it's still remotely possible they could leap over imploding Orlando for the sixth spot)—which means they're facing a marquee matchup against the Miami Heat in the first round. And the pre-sale for playoffs tickets starts today for Chase cardmembers.
Rangers Waste Lead—And Series Edge—in OT Loss To Senators
Despite taking a two-goal lead 6:10 into the game, the Rangers could not hold off the Senators and push them to the brink of elimination. Instead, Ottawa rallied for a 3-2 overtime win, the second such victory in the series, and equal the conference quarterfinal at two games apiece. Anton Stralman and Ryan Callahan each bagged his second goal of the series, but the Senators tied the game before the end of the second period. After a scoreless third period, Kyle Turris scored the game-winner at the 2:42 mark of overtime. With both their losses coming in overtime, the Rangers have still not played from behind in a game this series. Yet they face a critical Game 5 at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.
Rangers Regain Control With Razor-Thin Win in Ottawa
After a game marred by fights and physical play, the Rangers and Senators tangled in a tense affair that was long on energy but short on goals. Henrik Lundqvist needed 39 saves to record his fourth career playoff shutout as the Rangers squeaked by, 1-0, in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. Brian Boyle scored the game's only goal and has now scored in each game of the series, which the Rangers lead two games to one.
Rangers Start Playoffs With Comfortable Win
For more than 30 minutes, the Rangers played a tight game in their playoff opener against the Senators. They held a one-goal lead thanks to Ryan Callahan's first-period strike, but Ottawa controlled the run of play and had several chances at an equalizer. Head coach John Tortorella called a timeout, and whatever he said worked. The Rangers responded with two quick goals, one by Marian Gaborik and the other by Brian Boyle and took a three-goal lead into the second intermission. They would go on to win, 4-2, with Brad Richards' adding a fourth goal. Henrik Lundqvist allowed two goals, but when the game was close, he made the saves he had to make. The two teams will play again on Saturday night at the Garden.
Rangers And Devils Look To Advance In First Round Of NHL Playoffs
A season ago, the Rangers sneaked into the playoffs as the No. 8 seed and were dismissed in the first round by Washington. This time around, they have led the Eastern Conference since Dec. 31 and will be sorely disappointed if they don't make a serious run at the Stanley Cup. Despite dominating the season series against powerhouses like the Bruins and Flyers, the Rangers lost three of four to the Senators, their first-round opponent. That said, they should not have any trouble advancing.
Tim Tebow Makes Slam Dunk Speech At The World Series Of Resurrections
Everyone's favorite Jets backup quarterback/meme generator/holy light Tim Tebow made his hotly anticipated appearance in Texas at the Evangelical "Super Bowl" today. According to AP, the event had "the feeling of a rock concert," with hundreds of school buses bringing people to Celebration Church in Georgetown, Texas—even Elmo was spotted there Tebowing! "In Christianity, it's the Pope and Tebow right now," pastor Joe Champion said. "We didn't have enough room to handle the Pope."
Tim Tebow To Deliver The Super Bowl Of Sermons Tomorrow
Fresh off his first authentic NYC lap dance offer and a quick mani/pedi, newest Jets backup quarterback/meme generator/holy light Tim Tebow will deliver the Easter sermon at a Texas church on Sunday. And more than 30,000 are expected to turn out to watch Tebow preach at the World Series of Jesus Christ Super Bowls: “Obviously, it’s our Super Bowl,” said Joe Champion, pastor at the Celebration Church. “Easter is the resurrection of Christ, which we celebrate in our faith.”
Knicks Fans, Get Ready: Isiah Thomas Fired By Florida International
Maybe the Mayans were right about 2012: Isiah Thomas was fired by Florida International University as coach of their men's basketball team today. Thomas lasted only three terrible years with the school, finishing with a 26-65 overall record (they never won more than 11 games with him in a season). You may now assume the fetal position and commence the Isiah Thomas Is Coming Back To The Knicks And There's Nothing We Can Do About It speculation.
