NYPD Launches "Don't Mind Your Own Business" Campaign To Combat Domestic Violence

NYPD Launches "Don't Mind Your Own Business" Campaign To Combat Domestic Violence

This morning at 1 Police Plaza, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly announced a new citywide campaign to combat domestic violence. Beginning today, advertisements will be displayed on bus shelters, phone kiosks, and newsstands across the five boroughs in English, Spanish, and Russian. The objective of these ads, not unlike the familiar "If You See Something, Say Something" posters found throughout the subway system, is to encourage New Yorkers to speak up if they suspect a family member, friend, coworker or neighbor is the victim of domestic violence. “Silence is an accomplice of domestic violence,” said the police commissioner. “That’s why people should heed the message of this campaign, ‘Don’t mind your own business.’” more ›

Anarchists Think Photographers And Reporters Are The "Fu*king Enemy"

Anarchists Think Photographers And Reporters Are The "Fu*king Enemy"

A week ago, several hundred protesters ran through Lower Manhattan on a "Wildcat march" that was coordinated around other May Day protests. Some black bloc tactics were used, but most of the violence was directed towards photojournalists, as several fought with protesters who were attempting to damage their cameras or prevent them from covering the march. A thread on Anarchist News calls the photographers "vultures" and notes, "journalists are fucking enemies." But how many protesters actually believe this? And what does it say that a faction of anarchists seem to be taking a page from the NYPD in limiting what press can and cannot cover? more ›

NYPD Detained Protester On May Day In Case Of Mistaken Identity

Last week we learned that the NYPD and the FBI attempted to glean information on the May Day protests by executing bench warrants on people they believed were involved with planning Occupy Wall Street demonstrations and interrogating them. One of those people, who goes by the pseudonym Shawn Carrié, spoke to WNYC about how he was detained by the NYPD on May Day for over 13 hours on a warrant for a public urination charge that didn't belong to him. more ›

Who Is Stealing Tree Guards From Times Square's Restaurant Row?

Either somebody is really into selling scrap metal these days, or an incredible art show is coming to Bushwick soon. Just after we were left giggling over somebody robbing more than 30 NYC manholes of their covers comes word that somebody else (or maybe the same somebody?) went and stole a slew of iron tree guards from Times Square's Restaurant Row. And unlike ConEd, the Times Square Alliance is offering a reward for anyone who can help them catch the culprit. more ›

Video Contradicts NYPD In Case Of Beaten Bronx Teen

The Bronx DA's office previously announced that the police officers who beat 19-year-old Bronx resident Jateik Reed in January weren't being investigated for committing a crime, despite the fact that authorities dropped the drug-related charges against Reed. That may change now that NY1 has obtained a surveillance tape that shows that police likely did not have reasonable suspicion to stop Reed, contradicting sworn police statements that Reed had bags of drugs that he threw on the ground. more ›

Violent iPhone Theft Isn't Really A Concern For Billionaire Bloomberg

Violent iPhone Theft Isn't Really A Concern For Billionaire Bloomberg

iPhone-related thefts are up 44 percent this year, but that doesn't really seem to bother Mayor Bloomberg. At his budget announcement yesterday Hizzoner was asked about the spike in crime and replied nonchalantly that, "If the worst problem we have is iPhone stealing..." Then he turned to the police commissioner added, "Ray, you’d better get on this iPhone right away. This is serious!" Somehow we suspect the parents of the chef killed for his iPhone, or the teen stabbed in the face for his, or the 81-year-old pushed in the subway tracks for his, wouldn't appreciate the mayor's tone. more ›

Prematurely dubbed a "dud" by Reuters, the long series of events that spanned many hours and much of the city itself culminated in tens of thousands of union members, students, and other demonstrators marching at a snail's pace down Broadway. Later that night, several thousand protesters massed at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Plaza in Lower Manhattan before the police forced them to disperse or face arrest. more ›

However, some of the envelopes did contain a note, with the words, "Happy May Day," and "This is a reminder that you are not in control. Just in case you needed some incentive to stop working. We have a little surprise for you. Think fast." more ›
