The Knicks took off the "interim" tag and officially made Mike Woodson their head coach yesterday with a multiyear deal. After taking over for Mike D'Antoni on March 14, Woodson led the Knicks to an 18-6 regular season record, as well as their first playoff win in over a decade against the Miami Heat. "Our goal is to build off the success we had at the end of last season and to continue our quest of bringing an NBA championship to Madison Square Garden," he told reporters yesterday.
Knicks Make Mike Woodson Their Official Head Coach
Could The Brooklyn Nets Snag Jeremy Lin From The Knicks?
While Coach Mike Woodson has said that Jeremy Lin is "absolutely" going to be a Knick next season, Lin has been slightly more cagey about what might come next for him: "Personally, I think it would be great if I come back. But crazy things happen and I don’t really know what’s going to happen.” Now, there are reports that the Nets would love to steal Lin from the Knicks and transplant Linsanity to Brooklyn. At least that means he won't have to break up his new Entourage just yet.
NY Post: Jeremy Lin Has Been Corrupted By Models And Booze!
It was only three months ago that Knicks star Jeremy Lin was avoiding paparazzi and eager female fans at downtown club Avenue—Linsanity was fully underway when reports came out of him shunning champagne for Bud Light, leaving the club by the relatively modest hour of 2 a.m. The NY Post is sad to break the news, but that Lin is gone now—and all that is left is a party-hardy husk of swishing, dishing, and tipsy flirting.
Knicks Offseason Already As Dysfunctional As Regular Season
After an incredibly bipolar season filled with multiple injuries, coaching changes, a revolving door of starting lineups, ego clashes, superstars unable to play with one another, and a month of Linsanity, the Knicks' wacky season ended Wednesday night with a 106-94 loss to the superior Miami Heat in Game 5 of their playoff series. There seem to be a million questions hovering over the team now, already threatening to make their offseason as dysfunctional as this past season. Can Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire coexist? Will Jeremy Lin be back? Will Mike Woodson be coach? Will this lineup ever gel? And will Stoudemire ever help Shane Battier get up?
Knicks Go Home; Rangers Return Home For Game 7
They flirted with relevance during for parts of the lockout-shortened season, but the 2011-12 Knicks will be remembered as a fleeting disappointment. Their season came to an end with a 106-94 loss to the Heat. Meanwhile, the Rangers fell, 2-1 to the Capitals and will play a seventh game on Saturday.
Can The Mike Bibby-Led Knicks Steal Another One From The Heat Tonight?
Despite the mounting injuries and merciless defense of the Miami Heat, the Knicks were able to snatch Game 4 at MSG on Sunday, avoiding a sweep and ending their NBA-record 13 consecutive playoff losing streak. The Knicks are hoping to win tonight in Miami and push the series to a Game 6 back in NY on Friday—but with the losses of Jeremy Lin, Iman Shumpert and Baron Davis, the Knicks are left relying on Mike Bibby and Toney Douglas (who hasn't played once during the series) to lead the team at point guard. Oh yeah, and they'll also be playing a thoroughly pissed-off Heat team, and the ghosts of their recent past: "I just don't want to look at that fire extinguisher at all," Amare Stoudemire said. "But getting a win in Miami would be huge for us."
[Update] Knicks/Heat Game 4: KNICKS WIN!
[Updates Below] We've been there for every minute of this agonizing playoff series between the Knicks and Miami Heat—watched every Carmelo Anthony shot attempt, read about every fire extinguisher incident, listened to every absurdly confidant quote. And now we're exactly where we were last season, with a Game 4 elimination match at MSG. Amare Stoudemire is starting, bandaged hand and all—but will it make any difference? We'll be here to update the post through every high and low this afternoon.
Jeremy Lin Likely Out For Game 4, But At Least He Has A Fruit Roll-Ups Jersey
Last night was perhaps the cruelest playoff loss yet for the Knicks in this series against the Miami Heat: while game 1 was a blowout and game 2 was just glass-smashing, the Heat actually played really badly for a large amount of Thursday night at the Garden. LeBron James seemed to be doing everything he could in the first three quarters to give this one to the Knicks, yet they couldn't quite keep their first half momentum going, resulting in a thoroughly depressing 87-70 loss. Between their looming sweep and his lingering injuries, it's practically a certainty that Jeremy Lin won't risk more injury by playing in Game 4 on Sunday. But there is something he can do for the team: invite them over to binge eat his jersey made entirely of fruit-roll ups.
Knicks and Devils Head in Opposite Directions
Down two games to none in their playoff series and without Amar'e Stoudemire, the Knicks needed a better performance at home in Game 3 against the Miami Heat. For three quarters, they put forth a better effort than the first two games (not saying much), but they fell apart in the fourth quarter of an 87-70 loss. The Knicks led by four at the half but scored only 30 points after intermission. Despite the belief he might benefit from Stoudemire's absence, Carmelo Anthony laid an egg. He shot 7-of-23 for 22 points, and had almost as many turnovers (five) as made baskets. The Knicks were outscored by 25 points with him on the floor. The Knicks have now lost an NBA-record 13 straight playoff games. They'll play for their season Sunday.
Knicks Still Optimistic For Game 3 Against Heat...Despite Everything
In the wake of two bad losses to the Miami Heat and Fire Extinguishergate, the Knicks are not exactly in great shape heading into Game 3 at the Garden tonight. But even with no Iman Shumpert, Amare Stoudemire and Jeremy Lin, the team is still hopeful they can end their playoff win drought...somehow: “It’s a big challenge but we’ve been facing challenges all year,’’ Carmelo Anthony said after yesterday’s practice. “We all got to do it. I’m not going to do it myself. We just got to believe we can go out there and win the game. “They did what they had to do on their court. Now it’s our turn.”
Amar'e Is Real Stupid: Knicks' $99 Million Man Punches Fire Extinguisher Case, Injures Himself
As if losing a second playoff game to the Miami Heat was bad enough, the Knicks' $99.7 million power forward decided to make things worse by apparently punching a fire extinguisher's glass case at the American Airlines Arena in Miami. According to ESPN's league source, Amar'e Stoudemire is "'almost certain' to miss Game 3 on Thursday in New York and there is a possibility that Stoudemire could miss the rest of the series."
Rangers See Series Tied at 1; Knicks Should Be So Lucky
With one foolish penalty, Brad Richards helped undo a two-goal comeback he helped start, and the Rangers fell to the Capitals, 3-2. The center scored in the final minute of the first period but took a bad holding penalty at the 12:29 mark. That set up the game-winner from Alex Ovechkin, who was a much bigger factor than he was in Game 1. The series is tied at one game apiece, with Game 3 coming Wednesday in Washington.
Knicks Hit New Low In Opening Playoff Game Against Heat
Well, that's one way to start a playoff series: the Knicks got utterly destroyed in game one of their playoff series against the Miami Heat yesterday afternoon. After a well-played first quarter, the game was never close again—the 100-67 final score doesn't even give you an idea of how pathetic it was. So all that confidence was definitely not justified. NY Times reporter Michael Powell has an idea of how they can win game two though: "Sign Ewing, page Oakley at car wash, ask Starks if he is still limber..."
Kreidermania! Rangers Take First Game Against Caps
Are you tired of Tebowmania? Were you late to Linsanity? Well then here's your chance to jump on the next big thing in New York City sports—Kreidermania. Chris Kreider is quickly establishing himself as a star in the NHL, just ask Washington. Saturday, Kreider broke a 1-1 tie with a beautiful goal. He jumped into the play, received a great pass from Derek Stepan and blistered a slapper past Braden Holtby. Just a minute and a half later, he dug the puck out of the corner and setup Brad Richards for the Rangers third goal as New York took the opening game of their series with Washington 3-1.
Are The Knicks Absurdly Confident Or Justifiably Confident They Can Beat Miami?
Why is Stoudemire in particular so confident in the team? He thinks they have more depth than Miami: depth. “Our bench has been phenomenal for us all season long," he told the Post. "We’re a much better defensive team than we were before. We have so many threats offensively to match their offensive threats. So it’s pretty much even as far as our startling lineup and I think our second unit is a little bit stronger.’’
Zen Garden? $50 Million Rumor About Phil Jackson Coaching Knicks
Former Knick and legendary NBA coach Phil Jackson was on top of Knicks fans' wish lists after Mike D'Antoni resigned (a.k.a. was forced out) last month, though Jackson, who coached Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers to 11 championships, is reportedly very happily retired. But today is the last Knicks home game for the shortened season, so obviously it's time for the "Phil Jackson will get a monster offer to coach the Knicks" rumors!
Video: Playoff-Bound Knicks Get Amare Stoudemire Back Tonight
Despite what the Charles Barkleys of the world might say, the Knicks have been playing their best non-Linsanity basketball of the season over the last few weeks, and could be poised for an exciting playoff run. With the Milwaukee Bucks losing last night, they secured a playoff spot for the second year in a row—and even better, Amare Stoudemire will be back in the lineup tonight against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Knicks Playoff Tickets Pre-Sale Starts At Noon Today (For Some)
The Knicks have looked dominant in their last two victories—they're reminding us of the early-00s Philadelphia 76ers, with Carmelo Anthony taking on the Allen Iverson role. Barring any insane meltdowns over their last four games, the Knicks will definitely be in the playoffs, most likely the seventh seed in the East (though ESPN points out it's still remotely possible they could leap over imploding Orlando for the sixth spot)—which means they're facing a marquee matchup against the Miami Heat in the first round. And the pre-sale for playoffs tickets starts today for Chase cardmembers.
MSG Easter Miracle: Knicks Beat Bulls 100-99 In Overtime
Who knew that the Knicks, battered and with an interim coach, could put on a thrilling Easter show against the dominating Chicago Bulls? Although New York was leading for the first half, Chicago regained its footing in the second. Still, the Knicks pushed Derrick Rose and the rest of the Bulls to overtime, thanks to Carmelo Anthony's efforts. And then Anthony had a three-pointer in final seconds of OT—finishing the game with 43 points—to seal the 100-99 victory.
Knicks Fans, Get Ready: Isiah Thomas Fired By Florida International
Maybe the Mayans were right about 2012: Isiah Thomas was fired by Florida International University as coach of their men's basketball team today. Thomas lasted only three terrible years with the school, finishing with a 26-65 overall record (they never won more than 11 games with him in a season). You may now assume the fetal position and commence the Isiah Thomas Is Coming Back To The Knicks And There's Nothing We Can Do About It speculation.
Jeremy Lin's Out? Amare's Out? Watch the Dwight Howard-Stan Van Gundy Show!
The hobbled Knicks are trying to shake off a lousy come-from-behind loss to the Indiana Pacers coming into tonight's game against the Orlando Magic. With every injury and freakout, their hold on a playoff spot seems more and more tenuous. But thankfully, their woes have been overshadowed today by the Magic's: coach Stan Van Gundy confirmed to reporters that he knows perpetually smiling star Dwight Howard asked management to get rid of him. And then he and Howard shared a very, very awkward moment together. Watch the video below!
Lincapacitated: Jeremy Lin Has "Successful Surgery," Keeps The Faith
Jeremy Lin posted a photograph of himself after his arthroscopic surgery—Lin Recovery—on Facebook, "Praise God for a successful surgery! Now on the road to recovery! Lets gooo. Much love to all the fans for your support and kind words."
Lincredibly Linconsiderate: Knicks Admitted Lin's Injury After Playoff Ticket Deadline
When the Linsanity stopped on Saturday, with the Knicks' announcement that Jeremy Lin would be out for the rest of the season due to a knee injury, it seemed obvious to some observers that there were issues with Lin's knee, but the Knicks just weren't talking about it. Now, the Daily News suggests that the Knicks were holding back the Linfinitely disappointing news so they could sell playoff tickets to season ticket holders.
Linsult To Linjury: Do The Knicks Have Any Playoff Hopes Without Jeremy Lin?
Only a week after Linsanity rose from the dead as the Knicks put together a winning streak under new coach Mike Woodson, Jeremy Lin made the depressing announcement that he would need knee surgery to "repair a partially torn meniscus in his left knee." Following his sobering press conference (which you can watch below), Lin tweeted optimistically: "Thx for all the love! Ill return from this surgery stronger/better than before and hopefully in time for the playoffs! Ecclesiastes 3:1&11." But can the Knicks make the playoffs—let alone make any sort of playoff run—without him?
Last Night's Action: With Linsanity Over For Foreseeable Future, Knicks Still Win
No Jeremy Lin, no Amare Stoudemire, no problem! At least not against the Cleveland Cavs. Despite missing two of their best players for yet another game, the were able to beat the Cavs 91-75. It was announced before the game that Lin would be out six weeks because of knee surgery and Stoudemire is still out with a bulging disk in his back. Saturday night, it was JR Smith who stepped up the scoring, leading the team with 20 points off the bench. Carmelo Anthony scored 19 points and Tyson Chandler scored 14 and had 12 rebounds. For now, New York is holding onto the final playoff spot, 2.5 games ahead of Milwaukee.
Linterrupted: Jeremy Lin Out For Rest Of Season With Knee Injury
The Linsanity has come to an end, at least for this season: Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin will undergo knee surgery to "repair a partially torn meniscus in his left knee." Time to blame Sports Illustrated, RIGHT?
Last Night's Action: Inching Closer
The Rangers beat a bad Montreal team 4-1 Friday to move within three points of clinching the Eastern Conference title. Marian Gaborik got things started with his 39th goal of the year. Brad Richards added his 25th and Michael Del Zotto added two in the third period to put the game out of reach. Only a late goal by the Habs ruined the shutout for Henrik Lundqvist.
Last Night's Action: Leading The NHL
The Rangers beat Winnipeg 4-2, thanks to some outstanding goaltending from Henrik Lundqvist and some great special teams. Michael Del Zotto brought New York back from the brink with a short-handed goal when the Jets were ahead 2-0. Ryan Callahan followed that up with a power-play goal to tie the game before the end of the second period. Brian Boyle and Derek Stepan gave the Rangers the win with goals in the third and New York now has 105 points to lead the Eastern Conference by five points.
Video: Hobbled Knicks Talk About "Beautiful" Bipolar Season
The Knicks are back at .500, and have a firm hold on the 8th playoff seed as they head into the final stretch of their shortened season. Despite the fact they've gone 7-1 since Mike Woodson took over for Mike D'Antoni after his surprise resignation, the team is ailing right now: Jeremy Lin, Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire have all been nursing wounds the past week. Today, the Knicks got some decent news about Stoudemire at least: the bulging disk in his lower back isn't as bad as doctors first thought, and he'll only be out 2-4 weeks. Maybe with this little break, he can finally have some time to brainstorm some ideas for his hebrew school.
Jeremy Lin Meets Guy Who Wrote Racist ESPN Headline
When Linsanity was at fever pitch, an unfortunate headline appeared on ESPN's mobile site to describe the Knicks' February 17 loss to the Hornets: "Chink in the Armor." The ESPN.com employee behind the headline was fired. Now, Lin has met the writer, according to Newsday.
