Grand Central's 100th Birthday Is Just Around The Corner

Next February the grandest train station we've got left, Grand Central Terminal, turns 100. And, we learned today, the MTA is looking to celebrate that achievement in style all year long. Speaking of style, Caroline Kennedy is the honorary chair of the terminal's centennial committee. The committee also boasts Spike Lee, so you know those are going to be fun meetings. more ›

The new iPad—the third generation—is officially on sale today and, like clockwork, there are lines outside stores. This is the first product release for the new Apple Store at Grand Central, and it seems like the terminal's cavernous halls are perfect for waiting during this miserable day, some of the lines are inside long hallways. more ›

Man Snatches iPhone From Midtown Lady, Passers-By Grab Him

While cops are being trained on how to use Find My iPhone to find stolen iPhones, sometimes it's just easiest to have some good Samaritans nearby to stop a smartphone robbery. That's what happened to one woman in Midtown earlier this month. more ›

Grand Central Drowns Out Occupy Wall Street Protesters With Train Announcements

Grand Central Drowns Out Occupy Wall Street Protesters With Train Announcements

Grand Central Terminal was relatively quiet and uncrowded last night at 5:15, and if not for the heavy police presence, you wouldn't have known that protesters were about to start making noise about a grab bag of political issues. Last time Occupy Wall Street raised their voices in the station a handful of demonstrators were swiftly arrested. But the widely-replicated video of cops collaring a woman for shouting was bad optics, so this time the authorities played it smart—letting the rabble rousers yell to their hearts' content, while effectively drowning them out with an unbroken stream of announcements over the terminal's p.a. system. more ›

Better, Longer Video Shows Activists Arrested For Yelling About NDAA In Grand Central

Better, Longer Video Shows Activists Arrested For Yelling About NDAA In Grand Central

On Tuesday, several protesters with Occupy Wall Street were arrested during a demonstration in Grand Central Terminal. The first to be arrested was Lauren Digioia, who like the others was yelling in protest of the National Defense Authorization Act, which contains an amendment authorizing the military to detain American citizens indefinitely without due process. This new video shows her arrest in much greater detail, with the videographer following along as MTA police lead her downstairs. Once she disappears from sight in the basement, her boyfriend, Zach Kamel, raises his voice, along with other protesters, to express his outrage. Care to guess what happens to him? more ›

Did Cops Arrest OWS Protesters At Grand Central For Shouting?

Did Cops Arrest OWS Protesters At Grand Central For Shouting?

A member of the Occupy Wall Street press team says police in Grand Central Terminal arrested at least one protester for shouting with the "people's mic," the movement's patented call-and-response method for amplifying a speaker's words without a megaphone. Tweeting from Grand Central, Jeff Smith says, "I heard the NYPD say 'if she does it one more time [mic checks] go get her.' Arrest happened seconds later. No warning." Jeez, we didn't realize being annoying was illegal! Here's video of one protester getting dragged out: more ›

Photos: First Look At The New Apple Store In Grand Central

We've got our photographer Katie Sokoler transmitting photos over to us from the new Apple store in Grand Central Terminal right now, and thought we'd give you a sneak peek before it opens up on Friday morning at 10 a.m. The 23,000-square-foot store is Apple's biggest, in all the land, but how do you think it looks? There's no cube, no glass staircase, since thankfully they can't go too against the design of the landmark they moved in to. more ›

The New Apple Store In Grand Central Is Opening This Friday

The New Apple Store In Grand Central Is Opening This Friday

The newest NYC Apple Store in Grand Central has been covered up in a black box for a while now, and the company has just announced that they'll finally be unveiling it (just in time for holiday shopping) this Friday, with an opening at 10 a.m. The 23,000-square-foot store is the largest Apple store in all the land, and we'll try to find a way in there (anyone have a chainsaw?) for a sneak peek before Friday to see how they utilized all that space (sadly, there will be no cube). more ›

Grand Central Apple Store Not Opening Friday, But Here's A New Photo

Grand Central Apple Store Not Opening Friday, But Here's A New Photo

While rumors were swirling that the Grand Central Apple Store may be opening on Black Friday, it looks like we'll be waiting a couple more weeks, with the new rumored opening date now Friday, December 9th (though this morning an Apple rep told us, "no opening date has been announced"). The Apple folks did send over this photo of the new display this morning, however, announcing the shop to be "arriving soon." And a December arrival is still pretty quick, considering we only started hearing about it this summer. Chances are they didn't want to pay that high rent (around $1.1 million/year) and keep doors closed for too long. more ›

Tunnel Worker Killed By Falling Concrete In Grand Central Project

Last night, a construction worker died after being hit by falling concrete while working in a tunnel under Grand Central Terminal. According to the Daily News, Michael O'Brien "was killed Thursday night in the collapse of a railroad tunnel deep under Park Ave., despite his father’s heroic efforts to save him... The young worker’s father, who was working alongside him, frantically tried to revive his son with CPR as workers rushed him through a network of tunnels to a waiting ambulance at E. 48th St. and Park Ave., the source said." more ›

Tennis Inside Grand Central, Anyone? A First Look At The Vanderbilt Tennis Club

In 2009, the "secret" tennis courts at Grand Central Terminal were eliminated to make way for a new Metro-North conductors' lounge. However, there was enough room left over for another court and two practice courts, and these finally opened to the public this month as the The Vanderbilt Tennis Club. Here's a photo of the main court, which is the only one in New York City equipped with on-court, slow-motion video analysis! more ›

Photos: See Grand Central Terminal (Nearly) Completely Empty

The MTA just released these photographs of Grand Central after the last Metro-North trains left and the MTA police secured the station—all part of the agency's systemwide shutdown today. The MTA has closed the terminal, and all commuter rail, subway, and bus service has been suspended. Only MTA bridges and tunnels are open now, and those will close if winds become very intense. more ›

MTA Board Approves Apple, Shake Shack GCT Outposts

Well, that was fast! Just last week we broke the news that Danny Meyer's beloved Shake Shack was making a play for Grand Central Terminal and today the MTA's board has approved it at their meeting—even though it turns out it wasn't even the highest bidder for its lower concourse space. Also approved to roll into the famous train station? Apple, which was given some interesting guidelines for how its store can be laid out. more ›

With Apple, Shake Shack On Board, Grand Central Will Be Home To Longest. Lines. Ever.

The t's still need to be crossed and the i's dotted, but once the full board votes on Wednesday it looks like all those rumors will be true: Apple and Shake Shack are coming to Grand Central Terminal. The MTA's director of real estate, Jeffrey Rosen, confirmed the news today and let slip a bit of new information about the newest additions to the terminal, pointing out that the newcomers will furthernot only a digital, but a cheeseburger divide” between the soaring terminal and its ugly sibling across town, Penn Station. more ›

NBC's Grand Central Automat: Free Food is Free Food

NBC's Grand Central Automat: Free Food is Free Food

We are embarrassingly adept at sniffing out free food, so we couldn't help but check out the homage to the automat that the folks from NBC have set up in Grand Central Terminal to promote the new series America's Next Great Restaurant. Spoiler: It's not exactly a machine, but more of a series of cubby holes that the cooks can place the food on for hungry commuters. more ›

Grand Central Terminal Apple Store Rumor Excites Nerds

Grand Central Terminal Apple Store Rumor Excites Nerds

Will Beaux Arts style meet sleek technology? Well, if the Cult of Mac's report is to be believed, then Apple is putting its largest store at Grand Central Terminal: "The store will open in the fall, likely early September — and it will be Apple’s largest retail space in the world. The store already has a name: Apple Store, Grand Central, according to a source close the company. The source said Apple will be making an internal announcement within the next month or so." more ›

Will Ophiuchus Come To Grand Central Terminal?

Will Ophiuchus Come To Grand Central Terminal?

As you have most likely heard by now—there's been talk of a new astrological sign, along with the possibility of your sign changing. Last week Susan Miller of AstrologyZone told us, "Nothing changed. Sidereal astrology studies the precession of the equinoxes, and it doesn't work when we sift 23 degrees." We have no idea what that means, but it sounds like if you were a Virgo last month, you are still one now. more ›

The Economy That Stole Christmas (Lights)

The Economy That Stole Christmas (Lights)

Well, this is almost as depressing as the death of mistletoe. Money troubles have put an end to the Grand Central Terminal holiday light show. The show has been going on for three years, but those looking for a little holiday light at the end of the tunnel this year won't find it. On the upside, this will speed up your hurried and already crazed yuletide exodus from the city, as it's sure to cut down on upward-pointing tourist cameras. more ›

Scenes From Thanksgiving Eve At Grand Central, Penn Station

If you're traveling today or tomorrow for Thanksgiving, we hope that you have a safe journey. For those of us staying at home, well, just be relieved we're not fighting crowds at Penn Station or Grand Central or—shudder—a local airport on this busy travel day. more ›

Tennis Is Coming Back To Grand Central Terminal

Tennis Is Coming Back To Grand Central Terminal

Last year, the "secret" tennis courts at Grand Central Terminal were eliminated to make way for a new Metro-North conductors lounge. However, there was enough room left over for another court and two hitting alleys, and the Wall Street Journal checks in with the progress, "Only in Manhattan, where indoor tennis courts are rarer than personal garages, would anyone sign up a year in advance for an hour of tennis. And only on this space-strapped island would they pay as much as $210 an hour for the privilege." more ›

Video: New Grand Central Terminal Constellation Lights

Video: New Grand Central Terminal Constellation Lights

On Monday, Grand Central Terminal unveiled their new LED-lighted Grand Concourse ceiling, which will not only return the constellations to their previous glory, but reduce energy costs for the MTA. Steve Stroh of Metro-North said the new lights will last "twice as long as the old system," and that it uses "about 60% less electricity than the original lights." The lights will be on from 5 a.m. to 2 a.m. every day, and each one will mimic the intensity of its star as seen from earth. “When gazing up, 125 feet above the Tennessee pink marble floor, one cannot see all the lighted stars at once,” says the MTA. "As people walk across the Concourse floor and their vantage point changes, different stars appear, giving a twinkling impression." more ›

Grand Central Ceiling Gets Outfitted With LED Lights

Grand Central Ceiling Gets Outfitted With LED Lights

In 1996, the MTA began a thorough cleaning of Grand Central Terminal's Main Concourse Sky Ceiling, which had been left almost black after years of neglect and pollution. But though New Yorkers can once again look at the backwards zodiac constellations, they just haven't gotten the full effect without the lightbulbs shining behind the stars. The ceiling has been completely dark for the past six-months, but today the Terminal is unveiling new LED lights that will bring a more realistic stargazing experience (much to the chagrin of everyone trying to actually get somewhere). more ›

Yesterday morning, the MTA's Metro-North Railroad, along with other agencies, held an "emergency preparedness exercise" at Grand Central Terminal. The annual exercise involved 30 "victims," including two who needed to be transported to hospitals, which resulted in firefighters and EMTs taking some volunteers out on stretchers through the terminal and into Midtown. more ›
