Check out the colorful scene on Fifth Avenue around St. Patrick's Cathedral yesterday afternoon, where the sublime weather brought out thousands of celebrants in their Sunday best. Every Easter, the city shuts down a large stretch of Fifth Avenue for the Easter Parade, which is no longer a parade in the contemporary sense of the word, but more of an opportunity for New Yorkers to promenade on the open avenue wearing extravagant finery. (Later in the day, everyone gathers in the Capitol's "Central Park" to watch the annual reaping for the Hunger Games.) Although we were watching it on livestream while playing bingo, hundreds of thousands of people (the Post puts it at 2 million!) came out for the 251st annual St. Patrick's Day Parade in Manhattan today, and were treated to absolutely gorgeous weather. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly led the bagpipers up toward Central Park, where Bloomberg got a chance to try out some jokes: "The luck of the Irish means that if you are Irish, you're lucky enough,'' he told reporters. more ›

Video: "Bogus Beggar" Makes $$$ Pretending To Be Hurt

In this economy, you can't just click on those "Single Mom Makes $500 a Day At Home" ads—you have to get proactive when it comes to making a living. Inside Edition went to 5th Avenue ("the Avenue of Avenues," as they put it), to find a female entrepreneur who is pulling herself up by the bootstraps crutches with a begging scam that will probably ruin the reputation of the genuinely infirm. more ›

NYPD Must Stop Harassing Panhandler On Fifth Avenue

NYPD Must Stop Harassing Panhandler On Fifth Avenue

Sojourner Hardeman is a 42-year-old former law firm assistant who quietly panhandles on Fifth Avenue near 56th street, advertising her computer and typing skills with a cardboard sign. She makes enough for a MetroCard, a storage space, food and a phone bill. But the NYPD's Midtown North Precinct, shocked at seeing an endangered species on their turf, arrested her for disorderly conduct this spring. Hardeman filed a lawsuit challenging the bogus detention, and was repeatedly harassed and ticketed last month because of it, the Times reports. "You can't be here. This is Fifth Avenue," the officers told her. In the NYPD's defense, the sanctity of the Build-A-Bear Workshop must be protected at all costs. more ›

Fifth Avenue Apple Cube Being Stripped Of 75 Panes Of Glass

Fifth Avenue Apple Cube Being Stripped Of 75 Panes Of Glass

In June we saw that Apple began to work out some issues with its iconic cube on 5th Avenue, to the tune $6.6 million... though it wasn't very clear what the problems were. At the time, planning documents revealed that the company be making upgrades to the surrounding plaza structure, before reinstalling the cube. Now MacRumors reports back with a photo. The company has now revealed the plan on their temporary facade, and they sent us over this new rendering and plant. Though it turns out nothing is wrong with the old cube, they want to simplify it, and "by using larger, seamless pieces of glass, we're using just 15 panes instead of 90." more ›

Fifth Avenue By Central Park Now Officially The East Side

Fifth Avenue By Central Park Now Officially The East Side

Last week, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer noticed that there was some perplexing signage on bus stops along Fifth Avenue extending from 110th to 59th Street, identifying the streets as West, not East. Technically, the signs were correct, sitting in the western zone of the street grid, but Stringer argued that they should be changed to better reflect their actual position, and not confuse tourists. And yesterday, an official verdict was issued by the DOT—East siders prevailed! more ›

What Side Of Manhattan Is Fifth Avenue On Anyway?

What Side Of Manhattan Is Fifth Avenue On Anyway?

One of the best things about Manhattan is the grid, a constant reminder of logic and order in a city which is otherwise filled with questionable logic and a lack of order. But it's always been a bit troublesome trying to pin down what side Fifth Avenue, the dividing line between the Biggie East and Tupac West sides, is on. And now, the confusion over that dividing line has gone too far for one eagle-eyed borough president! more ›

Andaz 5th Ave Opens Excellent Underground "Bar in the Cellar"

Behind an unmarked door underneath the Andaz Hotel on Fifth Avenue awaits a dimly-lit, seductive subterranean lair called... well, it doesn't have a name yet. (For those who like labels, we're told it will eventually have a name.) People are calling it the "bar in the cellar" for now, but this no-name lounge is already a noteworthy destination. Though it's not yet "officially" open, the big beautiful room was almost completely full by 8 p.m. last night, and it's easy to understand why. more ›

Sublime weather welcomed thousands of festively attired promenaders for the Fifth Avenue Easter Parade yesterday. The annual event isn't a parade in the conventional sense—no floats or marching bands—but it's arguably more enjoyable. Instead of massive, dangerous balloons marauding down the avenue, the space is taken over by the people, many of whom come dressed in spectacular costumes and monumental bonnets. According to Midmanhattan.com, the tradition dates back to the middle of the 19th century, "when the social elite would attend services at one of the 5th Avenue churches and parade their new fashions down the Avenue afterwards." more ›
