If you're a Law & Order fan and happen to be home this afternoon, you might want to watch or DVR the only Law & Order movie, Exiled. The two-hour 1998 effort, airing on TNT at 5 p.m. as part of its traditional July 4th L&O marathon, features a demoted Detective Mike Logan on patrol duty on Staten Island, his punishment after punching out a politician in his final episode on regular L&O. Not only are there appearances from Jerry Orbach and Sam Waterston, there's a pre-L&O:SVU Ice-T as a pimp!

The revolving door of Law & Order universe rotates again. Producers of Law & Order: Criminal Intent announced Chris Noth is leaving and Jeff Goldblum will be joining the show. Producers and Noth describe the decision as mutual.
In the Sex and the City movie, Mr. Big promises to build Carrie a bigger closet, but life doesn't imitate art for Mr. Big's portrayer Chris Noth. Apparently you can find his unwanted odds and ends at the Cutting Room, the bar he co-owns with Steven Walter. Walter tells gossip reporter Jo Piazza, "He cleans out his apartment, especially now that he is a dad, and he just dumps it all here. We have a lamp on the bar that Chris' girlfriend didn't like. Who has a lamp on their bar? It's an ugly lamp."

We got mixed reviews in our poll about the Sex and the City movie that's coming out more than three years after the show ended its HBO series. Whether we wanted it or not, the movie is going to happen -- and film crews and cast have already arrived.
- Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: a police-involved shooting at 149th St. and 3rd Ave. in the Bronx, an attempted sexual assault on 55th St. in Brooklyn, and a bank robbery on West 52nd St. between 7th and 8th Aves.
- Kenneth Eng, noted earlier this year for his controversial essay "Why I Hate Blacks", was arrested again by the Feds shortly after pleading guilty to harrassing his neighbors and threatening them with a hammer.
- The New York Post reports that rumors of white people fleeing the city in a "white flight" are an urban myth, and that the latest census data supports the opposite conclusion. This is the first we've heard of any "white flight" rumors, and we probably would have correctly guessed the opposite over the last ten years.
- NYU is expanding across the East River, with the announcement of its first dorm in Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Paper reports that the school is opening a dorm for students in Brooklyn Heights, previously used as a dorm for the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society.
- Chris Noth signed on to the movie adapation of the HBO / NYC-centric series Sex and the City. He played the character Mr. Big, who flew to Paris to sweep protagonist Carrie off her feet in the series finale.

This might be the first time a British actor has played a Law & Order regular: Linus Roache will be playing the new Executive District Attorney. (Sam Waterston's Jack McCoy is getting a promotion to DA, since Fred Thompson has left the show to pursue a presidential campaign.) We foresee sexual tension between his character and Alana de la Garza's Connie Rubirosa! Is it a coincidence that Roache is the second star from short-lived NBC show Kidnapped to join the L&O cast - Jeremy Sisto is the new detective, accompanying Jesse L. Martin. Martin is only signed on for about half the season, so there may yet another cast change. Wolf said that he wants to attract a younger demographic and teased some of what Jack McCoy may face. From the Daily News:
Sam is not going to be the pragmatist the elected politicians have been. He's also going to be someone who goes through changes in his own attitude because he is doing a different job, and a lot of it is going to be fascinating because we talked openly about what happens to men of a certain age and a certain stature when the next generation comes in. There's a lot to play here.Maybe McCoy can tangle with community boards - Waterston testified at a community board hearing about naming a street after Jerry Orbach in March!
Back in May we asked what you thought of a Sex and the City movie, 51% of you thought it was coming three years too late. Whether we like it or not, the movie is going to happen - after Kim Cattrall finally signed on. Word is that she wanted a higher salary and a deal for a future HBO show, both of which she got. Guess her post-Samantha days haven't been filled with great roles (see: Ice Princess with Michelle Trachtenberg).
Swanson: Law & Order called my agent and said that they're doing the Anna Nicole Smith story. They knew I had just given birth a month before and asked, "How does she feel and how does she look?" My agent said, "Well, she's a little heavy, because she just had a baby," and they told him it would work for the story, because the character just had a baby, so she's up a few pounds, too. [Laughs] So after much discussion with [boyfriend] Lloyd, I decided to do the show...
- Today on Gothamist Newsmap: A ceiling collapse at Bowling Green/Battery Park on the subway's 4 line this morning, a bank robbery at 206th St. and Bainbridge Ave. in the Bronx, and a report of a missing child at Franklin Ave. in Brooklyn.
- Imminent end of an era as the actual physical floor of the NYSE gets quieter daily.
- Original "Buffy" Kristy Swanson to appear on L&O as
Anna Nica drug-addled blonde bombshell with a dead son. Link has priceless pic of Chris Noth looking for clues in Swanson's decolletage.
West Chelsea can do no right, as now Miss USA Tara Conner is getting raked over the coals over her partying. Yesterday, TMZ reported pageant officials and NBC met to discuss Conner's status as Miss USA, given "alleged incidents of her inappropriate behavior, including her conduct at New York City bars." And by inappropriate, they mean underaging drinking at clubs downtown, alleged substance abuse, and missing Miss USA appearances, as Conner is only 20 years old. While Donald Trump, who co-owns the pageants (the winners of Miss USA, as well as Miss Teen USA and Miss Universe, live at Trump Place on the Upper West Side), said that officials were evaluating Conner's situation as she's "going through some personal problems and difficulties right now which could affect her ability to reign," she's still Miss USA.
NBC nearly blew our mind this morning when we headed to iTunes and noticed that a couple shows had episodes for download - including two seasons of Law & Order! It looks like NBC is dipping L&O's toes, with only the first (but great) season with Michael Moriarity, Richard Brooks, George Dzunda, and Chris Noth and the current season available for download. NBC, hurry up with the other seasons - we want our Jerry!
Police are still looking for Peter Braunstein, the man suspected attacking a former co-worker in her Chelsea apartment as he disguised himself as a firefighter. Police continue to say that they believe Braunstein "is enjoying" the attention, but are concerned he may attack again. The Post reports that security at Fairchild Publications, where WWD, Details, Jane, W, and other pubs are headquarters and where he used to work, has been increased, with extra guards "at times stationing themselves outside the women's bathrooms." Further, Braunstein may be familiar wtih some police tactics as he would study his videos of how the police acted during public protests.
The MTA has asked Lockheed Martin to help install various security devices on its train and bus systems in a $200 million deal. The MTA weather criticism earlier this year when it was revealed it had only spent a tiny bit of the nearly $1 billion it said would be allocated towards security. Gothamist wonders what's more annoying - designing tanks for the feds or security systems for the city. We also think it's funny how in all the reports, whether print or broadcast, there's a mention of how surveillance installations won't prevent terrorism but it's a step in the right direction, as if to remind everyone that we can't pin our hopes on a tiny camera.
Gothamist thinks a lot about what Brooklyn still needs- a really great grocery store, better dry cleaners, a safer G train. But we never knew Williamsburg was craving a piano bar.
Yesterday, people from TV, film, and Broadway, as well as the public, gathered to pay tribute to the dearly missed Jerry Orbach. The attendees included Angela Lansbury, Al Pacino, Benjamin Bratt, Chris Noth, Jill Hennessy, Jane Alexander, Karen Ziemba, and Dick Wolf, plus many regular New Yorkers who cherished Orbach's contribution as an actor. Former Mayor David Dinkins was there, and Mayor Bloomberg spoke to the crowd, saying, "Briscoe exuded the life of the city in all its moxie...Jerry came to personify New York in both body and soul." NBC President Jeff Zucker and L&O producer Dick Wolf presented Orbach's widow Elaine with a $1 million check for Sloane Kettering's Cancer research fund as well.
While this graffiti stencil caught by callalillie captures the mystique of Detectives Goren and Eames of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, it turns out that there needs to be an addition. Chris Noth, aka Detective Mike Logan from Law & Order's first five seasons, will be a permanent cast member of Criminal Intent this fall. He and Vincent D'Onofrio will be splitting the episode load as lead detectives on the case (D'Onofrio has had some exhaustion-related absences). Gothamist is excited about Noth's return; our only request: Lose the alcohol bloat and put cucumbers on your eyes. But we're also curious if the Mike Logan character will lend itself to be as Sherlock Holmes-ish, as Goren is supposed to be. Anyway, we'll get our chance to see how Noth fares on Criminal Intent, as his guest appearance will air this weekend. Now, where's the Jerry Orbach stencil?
And on Saturday, Jerry was posthumously awarded the SAG award for best actor in a drama series. Elaine Orbach accepted the award, noting that Jerry always said, "Never leave a hit show" (scroll down for her acceptance speech). Gothamist is happy that they gave it to him, but it is sad this was his first solo nomination.
Where does Detective Mike Logan rank on your list of favorite L&O detectives? Do you have any ideas why Chris Noth looks so tired and bloated these days?
It's good to know that Winona Ryder is basically like the Welcome Wagon for any semi-cute up-and-coming would-be rocker - at least someone is looking out for the lads. That's why she was the focus of a VH1 All Access:Winona Rules! Truly, it makes sense for Winona to be featured, because as Courtney Love says, as quoted on the show's site, "You’re no one in music until you have feuded with me or until you sleep with Winona!”
For once, Gothamist might be saying there's too much information. It was bad enough knowing Ron Livingston had only signed on for eight episodes (so far?) for Sex and the City before the season even started, meaning Jack Berger is probably not anything too permanent. It's just that there's something wonderfully (relatively) sane and normal about Berger that's even more of a fantasy than Chris Noth's Big, who, by recent Gawker accounts, is looking really rough.
How could people think that a cable movie version of Caesar would be a good idea? Just looking at photos of Chris Noth as Pompey in TNT's Caesar makes Gothamist seriously rethink the idea of a Roman Empire. And Jeremy Sisto, is he the new go-to man for TV and cable biopics about leaders many millennia ago?
Hipsters and indie rock fans (Gothamist is not sure if these are the same people; working on the Venn diagram), rejoice: I Am Trying To Break Your Heart is on DVD today. The Sam Jones directed documentary of Wilco recording Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was critically well-received. But of course, you hipsters and indie rock fans don't care and already know the documentary is good.
