This morning on CBS's Early Show, Adam Lambert spoke out about his AMA controversy (which led to Good Morning America cancelling his appearance). To recap: Lambert simulated a blow job and made out with a male during his performance on Sunday night. The Early Show chose to blur out the controversial acts when running the AMA clip this morning — and during the talk segment, that they decided to call "Straight Talk," the openly gay singer defended his actions.

Legendary CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite's death is still being mourned by the country. In a statement released by CBS News, President Obama said, "He brought us all those stories large and small which would come to define the 20th century. That’s why we love Walter, because in an era before blogs and e-mail, cellphones and cable, he was the news. Walter invited us to believe in him, and he never let us down."

Walter Cronkite, known as the "most trusted man in America" as CBS News anchor, died at age 92 last night. The NY Times' obituary states, "From 1962 to 1981, Mr. Cronkite was a nightly presence in American homes and always a reassuring one, guiding viewers through national triumphs and tragedies alike, from moonwalks to war, in an era when network news was central to many people’s lives." His son told the Times that the cause of death was complications from dementia, while the AP reports, "Cronkite’s longtime chief of staff, Marlene Adler, said Cronkite died at 7:42 p.m. at his Manhattan home surrounded by family. She said the cause of death was cerebral vascular disease."

    

Yesterday, the much-ballyhooed gathering to demand that CBS fire talk show host David Letterman after his questionable jokes about Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's daughter (namely how A-Rod impregnated her by the 7th inning of a Yankees game and how Eliot Spitzer should be kept at bay) drew a few dozen protesters outside the Ed Sullivan Theater. Estimates are as high as 50 and as low as 15. But there was a lot of passion: Josephine Sarnok, carrying a "Over the Line, Dave" sign told Entertainment Weekly, “I’m outraged. It was a low blow. I’m insulted for women. I’m insulted for children. I’m insulted for families. I’m insulted."

A former Saks Fifth Avenue suit salesman allegedly used his employee-discount threads to glide past security in Midtown office buildings and steal cash and credit cards from empty offices. 34-year-old Edward Proctor was arrested last week and accused of lunchtime stealing sprees at CBS offices and another building on 49th Street in May and June. “I was in the next room eating lunch when he went behind my desk," one victim tells the Post. Proctor successfully robbed workers on the same floor at CBS twice in the same month; police only tracked him down after he allegedly used one of the credit cards to pay for his parking at a garage. He’s out on $40,000 bail, which, one hopes, wasn’t paid with plastic.

After speculation that she would leave CBS News well before her contract expires in 2011, CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric said she would be staying put. During the summer television press tour, she told reporters, "I have no plans to leave anytime soon. I'm very committed to the people here and the product." The product in question has lagged in ratings, placing third after NBC's and ABC's evening news broadcasts. Next week, all network anchors--Brian Williams, Charles Gibson and Couric--are joining Obama on his trip to the Middle East. When asked if the media was biased towards Obama, Couric said, "I don't think we're 'in the tank' at all. We talk to Sen. [John] McCain extensively. We go to events he allows us to cover."

It may be Fleet Week, but the U.S. Navy is not the only one in the city dropping anchors this week. WCBS-TV veteran anchor Jim Rosenfield is the latest victim of the CBS local news cutbacks here in New York.

As rumors about Katie Couric leaving the CBS Evening News early next year continue to simmer, the Daily News offers one suggestion from a network (CBS? CNN?) "insider": "Take Katie off the 'Evening News,' let her to do Larry King, and then let [Anderson] Cooper anchor" the CBS Evening News.

Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal suggested CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric may leave the network "well before her contract expires in 2011" and as soon as early next year.

WNBC’s newscast rebranding (back to "News 4 New York") was not the only change this week for the station. Vickie Burn, from NBC's DC affiliate WRC, is the new Vice President of News & Content aka news director, replacing Dan Forman. (The rebranding was just coincidental, according to the station.)

Television is coming back to life, with several shows (mainly on CBS) returning to the air this week with post-writers strike episodes. Amongst them, the comically inaccurate CSI: NY returns (Wednesday, 10:00 p.m., WCBS 2), with an investigation of a dead assassin found in a warehouse, no doubt filmed in someplace like Culver City.

After spending a few weeks this month as Mr. Hyde groveling for money with unwatchable schmaltz, PBS is back to its normal self doing the kind of meaningful important programming it does well like long form current affairs documentaries. True, the interchangeable Celtic singers and self help yackers may keep the stations on air, but having in depth looks at the issues of the day is more important, especially with an ongoing war and presidential election and nobody else on television is really doing it.

Fresh off her big night of wins in Ohio and Texas, Hillary Clinton spoke on CBS's Early Show and mentioned the words "dream ticket" in relation to the heated Democratic presidential race. Harry Smith told Clinton, "We talked to a lot of people in Ohio who said there really isn't that significant a difference between you two, and they'd like to see you both on the ticket." After remarking how "incredibly close" the race is, she said pairing up "may be where this is headed, but we have to decide who is on the top of the ticket, and I think that the people of Ohio very clearly said that it should be me."

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama march into tonight's Ohio debate with their arms swinging over a 2006 photograph of Obama visiting Kenya. The Obama campaign blamed the Clinton campaign for "shameful" tactics, while the Clinton campaign denied responsibility and said the Obama campaign should be "ashamed" of thinking the photo would be controversial.

Alycia Lane, the Philadelphia newswoman who punched a female NYPD police officer, was relieved after appearing at Manhattan Criminal Court today. The Manhattan DA's office basically dismissed her case, for an "adjournment in contemplation of dismissal."

CBS and NBC Boldly Go On Line With Classic TV

Thankfully NBC’s new version of the classically cheesy 1980s show Knight Rider (Sunday 9:00 p.m., WNBC 4) is not a remake, but a continuation of the old in this two hour movie/back door pilot. Of course, this means there are some changes, such as the presence of David Hasslehoff being reduced to a cameo, the two leads are ex-soap stars (the way the Hoff was), and horror of horrors KITT isn’t a Trans Am anymore thanks to a deal between NBC and Ford that product places a Mustang as the talking car (and Trans Ams aren't made anymore anyway). It has all the makings, save for being relatively Hoff-free, of being so bad it is good.

After a successful save the show campaign by fans involving sending tons of nuts to CBS, Jericho returns for a second season Tuesday night (10:00 p.m., WCBS 2), with the first of seven second season episodes. We should note that CBS only made a seven episode commitment to the show, in a move that seems more like hedging their bets instead of anything that has to do with the WGA strike.

She is a native of New England, attended Notre Dame and came to channel 2 in April of 2006 from KATV in Little Rock, Arkansas, which is ranked #57 on the list of biggest television markets. We recently paid her a visit at the studio and asked her some questions.

Some more details surrounding Heath Ledger's death have emerged, even though the autopsy is inconclusive for the actor's cause of death. Though CBS 2 initially reported that a rolled up $20 bill in Ledger's SoHo apartment had narcotic residue on it and that cops had found unidentified drug packets, the NYPD now confirms that lab tests found nothing to indicate the bill had been used to snort drugs and that no illegal drugs were found in the apartment. There were six types of prescription drugs in the room, including pills to treat insomnia and anxiety.

The NYC Medical Examiner's office says Heath Ledger's autopsy is inconclusive, citing the need to more tests. Spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said, "The autopsy is inconclusive and we have to do further testing which includes toxicology and tissue testing. We expect to have results in about 10 days to two weeks."

Looking to keep coverage of the ongoing Iraq quagmire edgy, a global news network hires him to bring a youth angle to the guerrilla war. Part satire, part dystopian nightmare, Shooting War is unflinching in its depiction of the hellish future toward which the Bush administration is corralling us.

If you are as big a fan of reality shows as we are, Fox’s Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Sunday, 8:00 p.m., WNYW 5) is very welcome. Thanks to the WGA strike, there will be only eight episodes, but still this looks like an action packed romp based on the popular film series.

To plug the giant hole in the network’s schedule this Sunday, caused by the WGA not giving a waiver to Dick Clark Productions for the Golden Globe Awards, NBC has handed the whole thing over to its news division.

Senator John McCain won the Republican primary in New Hampshire, with the race being called for him early on. Senator Hillary Clinton beat Senator Barack Obama by a few thousand votes in a very close race. Comebacks all around!

Let this be a lesson to KYW-TV employees: If you allegedly punch a police officer and call her a dyke, you're out of a job! Well, actually, Philadelphia reporter Alycia Lane also embarrassed herself when she sent bikini photographs to a married reporter's joint email account with his wife, so maybe the math is bikini-photo scandal + cop punching = firing.

A New Jersey man says he was burned by Christie’s and CBS Paramount when they knowingly dumped counterfeit Star Trek memorabilia at an auction in October ‘06. Diehard Trekkie Ted Moustakis has filed a $7 million dollar lawsuit against the auction house and the producers of Star Trek who supplied the disputed items, which included Data’s poker visor – made but never worn – in an episode of Star Trek: Next Generation, a “one of a kind” uniform worn by Data and the poker table from the episode.

As we previously mentioned, the late night heavyweights have been angling to make a return in early '08. Letterman has been leading the pack by working on a deal with the WGA through his own production company, WorldWide Pants Inc. Yesterday they reached an agreement which will allow his show to return to the air next week, writing staff and all.
