Despite the rain, the crowds poured in at Citymeals-on-Wheels Chef's Tribute fundraiser in Rockefeller Center last night. This year's theme -- Crème de la Crème, a tribute to the great French masters, many of whom were in attendance. As one might expect, honoring the world's best French chefs includes a large quantity of foie gras, caviar, duck, and truffles, and America's top chefs certainly put them all to good use. Each chef prepared two dishes: one classic dish as a tribute to a French master, and one of his/her own that was a variation on a French classic. more ›

Once again Taste of New York lived up to its name, with a roster of restaurants serving everything from ‘cue to cevape and some well-crafted cocktails to boot. Gothamist was honored to attend this culinary blowout thrown by New York to benefit City Harvest. One of the evening’s tastiest offerings was Insieme’s tortelli di zucca, or pumpkin filled pasta. Gothamist fought the stinking heat Tuesday to...sit in only marginally less heat at Florence Gould Hall (we sat among people who did not bring the smell of the 6 train, but there was no AC). The gracious staff of the French Institute/ Allaince Francaise were very accomodating, though, and kept things on-topic with the personalities and finesse of Audrey Saunders of Bemelmans(The Morning News included Bemelman's in a great, if somewhat dated, article about hotel bars) and Anthony Giglio, author of the new book Cocktails in New York and restaurant critic for the New York Sun.
