Steve Martin Didn't Wear Arrow Through Head At 92nd St Y!

On Monday night, a sold-out crowd at the 92nd Street Y paid $50 a pop to watch Steve Martin talk with NY Times columnist Deborah Solomon about his new novel, which concerns an "ambitious young art dealer" in NYC. Anyone willing to pay $50 to watch Martin chitchat probably knows that he's an avid art collector, but the Times reports that when the conversation lingered too long on boring old art, a "Y representative" handed Solomon a note asking her to cut the artsy fartsy crap and talk about Martin's movie career. For fifty bucks, couldn't he at least do some of that "wild and crazy guys" stuff from SNL? Dance, monkey! But now everybody's offended, and Solomon dropped the "ph"-bomb! more ›

Spitzer Criticizes Other Politicians at 92nd Street Y

Spitzer Criticizes Other Politicians at 92nd Street Y

Former Governor Eliot Spitzer was his usual opinionated self during an appearance at the 92nd Street Y yesterday. During a wide-ranging interview with CBS political analyst Jeff Greenfield, before an audience of nearly 1,000, Spitzer called Mayor Bloomberg "fundamentally in error about hesitating before we change the structure of banking," bashed President Obama's economic team over their coziness with Wall Street, and criticized presumptive gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo for refusing to answer questions about issues like health care and charter schools. But some audience members had their own scathing criticism—for Spitzer. more ›

Bypass Surgery Left Koch With Wild Visions

Bypass Surgery Left Koch With Wild Visions

Ed Koch just loves his moments in the sun. A week after the former mayor was sharing about cursing out New Yorkers heckling him in the grocery store, last night he was going off about his wild hallucinations at Columbia Pres while recovering from his recent quadruple bypass surgery. Koch told a crowd at the 92nd Street Y Monday, ”I thought I was captured by Japanese terrorists...When they cut off my thumbs, I knew it wasn’t real because there was no blood and no pain. I was daydreaming. I apologize to the Japanese. I know they’re great allies. I’m only telling you what I experienced.” CityRoom says Koch also mentions the terrorists spoke to him with a Yiddish accent. It sounds like if you ask the Columbia doctor's "how he's doing" in terms of showing his gratitude for the intensive surgery, they'd say pretty well. Koch is taking his 20 doctors out to dinner at Peter Luger Steak House in Williamsburg tonight. (One declined because he's Kosher.) As for the 72 nurses and technicians who aided him, they got the gift of an obligatory read with Koch sending them one of the 16 books he's written. more ›

Laura Bush Heckler Found Not Guilty Of Assault

Laura Bush Heckler Found Not Guilty Of Assault

That protester who heckled Laura Bush and daughter Jenna Bush after their children's book tour hit the 92nd Street Y last year finally had his day in court, and a jury found him not guilty. Gary Talis, 24, wasn't arrested for heckling, but for allegedly assaulting the parents of a wheelchair-bound teenage girl when they tried to shut him up outside the venue. When Talis started yelling about how the First Lady is married to a war criminal as she left the Y, John Lovetro (pictured), allegedly responded, "What are you doing? Shut up. This is about a child and books...Get out of here! You're being a moron!" Lovetro (pictured), his wife Wendy, and the couple's daughter, Maureen, who suffers from cerebral palsy, then got into some kind of altercation with Talis. All three Lovetroses, plus a Secret Service agent, testified that Talis attacked them, but Talis and another witness convinced the jury that the Lovetroses were in fact going after him. more ›
