Unlike 2010, there were no sexy bankers, tourist lanes, or gubernatorial races dominating our headlines this year. But there were natural disasters (Hurricane Irene) and global protest movements (Occupy Wall Street), strange political scandals (Weinergate, Deputy Mayor Goldsmith), strange sex scandals (parlez-vous DSK?), police corruption (the ticket-fixing saga), a long-awaited step forward (gay marriage), and the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. Revisit the year with this look back.

Pictures: Tribute In Light On Till Sunrise Tomorrow
The Tribute in Light, which features 88 separate beams of light shooting from the WTC into the sky, has become perhaps the most beloved and evocative of 9/11 memorials. If the sky around the city is clear of clouds, the annual Tribute will be able to be seen from at least 60 miles away. You can still catch the Tribute until sunrise tomorrow, but keep in mind that the project takes weeks of preparation and hundreds of thousands of dollars to construct—so if you want to keep seeing the memorial every year, you may want to consider helping out.
Video: Paul Simon Performs "Sound Of Silence" At 9/11 Memorial
Paul Simon was one of the featured performers this morning at the 9/11 anniversary ceremony; though he was supposed to perform "Bridge Over Troubled Water," he ended up performing "Sound of Silence." NPR's Margot Adler called it "perhaps the most moving moment of the ceremony." Below, you can watch his performance from today, as well as his performance of "The Boxer" on SNL from after 9/11.
Star-Ledger's Eloquent Front Page On 10th Anniversary of 9/11, Plus Other Newspaper Reflections
Some of the most indelible images associated with the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 came from newspapers covers. Looking back through those front pages from 9/12/01, there is one overriding similarity between them: they almost all include a picture of the towers on fire. Newspapers around the country have taken a more varied approach toward covering the tenth anniversary of 9/11, and almost none have a picture of the burning towers on them, preferring instead to focus on the Freedom Tower, victims, or other abstract designs. Take a look through some of today's covers, including our favorite, the eloquent front of The NJ Star-Ledger.
Officials Worried Terror Threat Suspects May Be Posing As Construction Workers
The NYPD has flooded the city with checkpoints and bomb detectors as they search for suspects in a "specific, credible but unconfirmed threat" involving car bombs to coincide with the tenth anniversary of 9/11. According to the Daily News, officials are now nervous that the terror threat suspects may be posing as construction workers to get close to tomorrow's memorial service. Currently, they are searching for three missing vehicles, including two belonging to Tully Construction in Queens, which is doing roadwork on West Street near WTC.
City Clamps Down As Authorities Ramp Up Search For Terror Threat
Police have flooded the streets, subways, and bridges of the city as they search for suspects in a "specific, credible but unconfirmed threat" involving car bombs to coincide with the tenth anniversary of 9/11. One NYPD lieutenant on patrol told the News that the heightened-security was unprecedented: "In more than 40 years, I've never seen this kind of all-out attention." Another NYPD official made a more specific connection to the current mobilization: "This is our version of Bush's shock and awe. The idea is to scare off a sophisticated network - let alone three men."
Never Forget...To Take Mass Transit To Ground Zero This Weekend
Fresh from being evacuated for Hurricane Irene, the residents of Battery Park City have another headache to deal with this weekend. As if having millions of eyes turned towards it in commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the city has released its parking plans for the area and, well, if you were planning on driving in lower Manhattan this weekend (wait, really?) you probably want to reconsider that idea.
President Obama Remembers September 11 Attacks
The Daily News has an exclusive op-ed from President Barack Obama on remembering the eighth anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The full op-ed is here, but here's an excerpt:
Eight years ago, on an ordinary Tuesday morning, nearly 3,000 lives were lost in the deadliest attack on American soil in our history.more ›
Tribute In Light Tested In Advance Of 9/11 Anniversary
Last night, you may have seen the Tribute in Light beams. The September 11 light installation, which involves 88 separate lights, was being tested ahead of its official annual lighting next week. We're checking to see if the location is the same as last year (West and Morris Streets), but they are visible throughout lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. On Friday, September 11, the lights will on at sunset and will "fade away" at dawn on September 12. The Tribute in Light was designed by artists Julian LaVerdiere and Paul Myoda, architects John Bennett and Gustavo Bonevardi of PROUN Space Studio, architect Richard Nash Gould, and lighting designer Paul Marantz and produced by the Municipal Art Society and Creative Time—it was first seen in March 2002 for a month and then became part of the September 11 anniversary fabric. In 2002, Bonevardi wrote about project, "We're not reconstructing the towers in their original size, but the distance between the two squares of light is the same as the distance between the actual towers. So in effect, we're not rebuilding the towers themselves, but the void between them."
City Remembers September 11 Seven Years Later
Earlier today, relatives and friends of victims and city, state and federal officials gathered at Zuccotti Park to commemorate the events of September 11. Mayor Bloomberg said, "Today marks the seventh anniversary of the day our world was broken...a day that began like any other and ended as none ever has." (Video below.)
NYC's Seventh Anniversary Plans for September 11
Here's the official schedule for the city's September 11 commemoration events tomorrow. Mayor Bloomberg, NY Governor David Paterson, NJ Governor Jon Corzine, Homeland Secretary Michael Chertoff and former Mayor Rudy Giuliani will make introductions or deliver readings at Zuccotti Park. And the victims' names will be read by a family member plus a student representing the victim's native country. This will probably be the last year victims' families can descend into the "pit," given the Ground Zero construction plans ahead. (Details about the Tribute in Light after the jump.)
