A high-ranking NYPD police officer was "savagely beaten" by her husband, who is a retired Long Island police detective. Deputy Inspector Juanita Holmes, who was tapped to lead Brooklyn's 81st Precinct after its quota scandal, was treated for broken ribs after a fight with her husband outside a Long Island home. Some reports suggest the couple was estranged and separated but her husband, Williams Fowlkes, tells the Daily News, "We aren't separated. We sleep in the same bed, live in the same house. What happened, the fighting, should not have happened. But she was having an affair."

Man Says NYPD Maced And Tasered Him For Double Parking
Another day, another black eye for the NYPD's 81st Precinct in Bed-Stuy. The latest bad news for the quota-happy precinct comes from a lawsuit being filed by a 26-year-old security officer named Jonathan Zimmerman who last April got in an altercation with an officer that left him with an inch-long taser spur lodged in his back.
Bed-Stuy Guys Will Walk You Home (Safely)
Well, file this under stories we'd like to see more of: After seeing a 10% increase in robberies in Bed-Stuy (there have already been over 300 in the 81st Precinct this year!) a group of 20 local black men have taken matters into their own hands—but not in the style of Death Wish. Instead they have started walking subway riders home from the Utica Avenue station on random weekday evenings.
Five 81st Precinct Officers Face Stat Manipulating Charges
Five NYPD officers from Brooklyn's 81st precinct are facing departmental charges of manipulating crime stats. Among them is Deputy Inspector Steven Mauriello, the former commanding officer of Bedford-Stuyvesant's 81st precinct, and one of the major figures in the stat manipulation lawsuit brought about by Officer Adrian Schoolcraft this year.
New NYPD Tapes Leave No Doubt That Quotas Are Real
The NYPD claims that so-called quotas for summons and arrests aren't real. But over the last year, between accusations made by Officer Adil Polanco and Officer Adrian Schoolcraft and studies by criminologists, it's getting harder and harder to believe New York's Finest. Today, another batch of secret recordings made in a police station in Brooklyn lends even more credibility to the existence of quotas.
Brooklyn Leaders Call For 81st Precinct's Head on a Skewer
The 81st precinct in Bedford-Stuyvesant has been the epicenter of a Serpico-led storm on the NYPD this year, with allegations of stat manipulation and under-reporting. Last night, City Council members and community leaders in Brooklyn held a closed-door meeting to discuss the allegations, and decided to send NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly a letter asking him to relieve 81st precinct commander Steven Mauriello of duty.
Brooklyn Cop's Secret Tapes Reveal Crime Stat Pressure
Earlier this year, Officer Adrian Schoolcraft pulled a Serpico, accusing the NYPD of under-reporting and refusing to investigate crimes in order to keep crime statistics down (a claim for which he received an unwilling psychiatric evaluation). Today, the Village Voice revealed that Schoolcraft sought to back up those claims by secretly carrying a digital recorder around his precinct for more than a year, logging hundreds of hours of conversations, and giving the public an insider's perspective on the management and pressures of an NYPD precinct.
Victim: Gunman Broke My Jaw, Detective Wouldn't Investigate
A Bronx detective has become the newest poster child for crime statistic fraud over allegations that he ignored and attempted to downplay a brutal armed robbery attempt that left a college student with a broken jaw. Tatjana Sevilla, 22, fought off a gun-toting crook who tried to force his way into her family's Castle Hill home, but the perp struck her in the face and fractured her jaw. Despite the severity of her injuries and the fact the culprit was armed, Detective Rene Narvaez allegedly classified the crime as a minor infraction—and refused to look at surveillance footage that could have helped the investigation.
Cop Shot Outside Brooklyn Precinct Barely Felt It
Police are still trying to figure out where the shot came from and if it was intended for the police officer it struck in the chest in Bed-Stuy (not Bushwick) yesterday. The 34-year-old unnamed cop was stepping outside the 81st precinct when he heard a gun go off and came back into the station to tell fellow officers, "I think I've been shot." The bullet was easily absorbed by the officer's bulletproof vest and no one else nearby heard the shot go off, leading police to believe that this was a pellet gun or low-level firearm. NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said, “Metal fragments, or fragments of the projectile, were taken out of the plate of the vest. This is something that did not penetrate the vest.” Police have been searching the area around the station house for any abandoned guns, but did not say that there were any suspects yet.
